League Women –Ansett v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels dumped Ansett out of a share of first place with a 81-50 hiding spearheaded by Trish Graham (10.4ppg) who is now just one game shy of her 500th League game. Graham stacked up 22 points for a game high (over 50% from all her shots) while Tamara Sheppard (20), Jamie Lee-Peris (17) and Justine Schmidt (15) chipped in with plenty of support. The return of Jamie Lee-Peris will shore up the keyway for the Rebels and with rumour of a return by Francis Clarke things are looking up for the defending Championship Season champions. Ansett was only 4pts adrift at half time 31-27 but a disastrous third quarter left them floundering as the Rebels piled on 20pts to just 6 for the Blues. Sam Drescher (18 @ 23.5ppg) tried her best to keep the Blues in the game, but the Rebels went from strength to strength in the home stretch, outscoring Ansett 30-17 in the last quarter for the win.

Warriors v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets held off the Warriors 54-44 to hold on to their share of first place on the ladder. The battle between the ‘talls’, Georgii Howlett (19.2ppg) from Jets and Carolyn Nyhouse (17.1ppg) from the Warriors favoured the Jets with Howlett leading all scorers with 18 points while Nyhouse put up 11. After a sluggish start in the first quarter the Warriors lifted to match the Jets almost basket for basket with five different players scoring in the second quarter. But the Warrior effort only spurred on Howlett who scored the last 6 points of that quarter to give the Jets a 28-20 lead at the half way mark. The second half was point for point as the Bombers stayed in control of the game, keeping the Warriors at bay for their ninth win of the season.  Free throws proved an issue as the Warriors only hit 4 of 13 while the Jets were 10 from 19. In close games shots from the charity stripe always make the difference. Jennifer Kinsella lent support to Nyhouse with 10 points.

Lightning v Eagles

The Eagles won their second straight game against Lightning 56-30, but the margin of the win was indicative of the impact from returning player Megan Fitzpatrick and the hustle shown by Lillian Williams who seems to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Williams (7.5ppg) hit a season high 20 and Fitzpatrick put up 16 for the second straight game as the Eagles exploded for 37 points in the second half while limiting Lightning to just 14. Lightning suffered through a woeful 9 from 68 attempts from the field…13%! The win leaves the Eagles & Lightning tied up at 3 win each as they struggle to make it into a playoff spot in the top four.

Ladder:                                           Tracy Village Jets & Uni Rebels 9-2, Ansett 8-3, Eagles & Lightning 3-8 & Warriors 1-10

No games next week due to Australian U/14 Girls Club Championships 3-8 October.

League MEN – Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

Ansett topped Tracy Village Jets 77-63 for their third win over their rivals this season. Ansett shared the points around with 19 from forward Daniel Florance (20ppg) and 18 from point guard Matt Hunt (17ppg) while Rashad Chase (22ppg) and Cameron McKenzie had 14 and 13. The Blues won every quarter despite the efforts of Travis Ellis (25 @ 24.3ppg) and Liam Maclachlan (13 @ 8.88ppg) who worked tirelessly to bridge the gap. Not much separated the teams on the stat sheet. Ansett hit 42% of their shots to 36% for the Jets and the Blues hit 13 of 19 free throws to 8 of 20 for the Jets. The absence of Nick Pattrick (16ppg) and Aaron Simpson (10.1ppg) from the Jets line up probably played a part in the loss, but Ansett seems to have the wood on the Bombers no matter who is in the lineup.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

Andre’ Moss put on another show with 49 points as the Uni Rebels trounced Lightning 122-46. Moss and new import Michael Jones combined for 79pts in the rout with Jarrod Sheppard adding 20 for good measure. Lightning struggled to just 9pts in the first quarter while the Rebels kept the score board ticking over to the tune of 36 first quarter points. The Lightning could not respond to the onslaught and suffered their third straight loss. Brodie Hertel was the high scorer for Lightning with 9. Moss now leads the scoring with a 37.4ppg average with 374 points from 10 games.

Eagles v Warriors

Eagle’s newest recruit, Larry Williams from the USA, made his presence felt with a 44 point game to lead the Eagles to their eighth win of the season, a thumping 128-70 result against the Warriors. Buster Perkins (26.5ppg) threw in 33pts in support of Williams (61% from the field) as the birds wasted no time in setting the tempo of the game. After rolling to a 29-17 first quarter lead, the Eagles continued to fire away at the hoop, hitting 48% of their shots from the field and getting 29 points from the charity stripe. Joseph Johnson and Henry Bui joined in with 19 and 13. 32 turnovers did not help the Warriors effort either. Warriors Rohan Cropley (19) Eric Klenke (12) and Ben Muvirimi (11) ran with the Eagles but failed to put up big numbers.

Ladder:       Ansett 10-1, Uni Rebels 8-3, Eagles 7-4, Tracy Village Jets 6-5, Warriors & Lightning 1-10
