Grand Finals

League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Minor premier Tracy Village Jets held off a late rally from the Eagles to capture the 2012 Challenge Season Grand Final with a narrow 64-58 victory. The defending champs from last year had set up the win with a strong first half that had them leading 27-16 and feeling very confident. The usual scoring trio of Georgii Howlett (23), Sam Rioli (18) and Kyle Duggan were hitting their shots and the defense was holding off the Eagle challenges, especially after a strong 15-6 second quarter run by the Bombers. However, the Eagles stepped up their defense and found the range with their shooting after the main break with Michelle Friel (15), Trish Graham (13) and Lilliam Williams (12) taking turns potting shots and staying in touch with the Bombers. The Bombers held a 48-36 lead at the start of the last quarter and had to withstand a stiff challenge from the Eagles in order to repeat as Challenge Season champions. Trish Graham led a 22-16 run in the quarter, hitting 8 of her 13 points and causing some tense moments on the Bomber bench. Howlett (18.5ppg) answered the challenge by adding 7 points to her game high tally and finished off the Eagles by hitting the last four points for the Bombers to seal the win. Demi Cubillo also hit double figures for the Bombers with 11.

Ladder-including Grand final:                   Tracy Village Jets 19-2-1, Uni Rebels 15-6-1, Eagles 14-8-1, Ansett 6-14-1, Lightning 4-15-1 & Warriors 3-16-1-2…Win-Loss-Draw-Forfeit

League Men –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets men made it a double for the club when they easily knocked off Ansett 73-46 for their 13th Challenge Season Grand Final victory. The Jets have contested the Challenge Season Grand Final a record 21 times since 1976. As predicted the Blues were going to be floundering without playmaking guards Matt Hunt and Jarrod Sheppard who were unavailable for the game. A close first quarter put the Bombers in front 17-14 before the floodgates opened up with the Bombers running off 33 points to just 14 over the next two quarters to take firm control of the eventual outcome. Travis Ellis (26.1ppg) had a field day, knocking down a team and game high 31 points during the rout with Dan East adding 11. Blues Matthew Barrett (13) and tom Blake (11) were the only two to hit double figures for the losers who were sorely missing the point’s production and defense of Hunt and Sheppard. Ellis led the League in points scored with 522.

Ladder-including Grand final:           Tracy Village Jets 18-4-1, Ansett 16-5-1, Eagles 14-8-1, Lightning 8-12-1-1, Warriors 4-15-1, Uni Rebels 2-13-1-4…Win-Loss-Draw-Forfeit
