League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

Georgii Howlett hit a game high 29 points along with 19 rebounds as the Tracy Village Jets rolled over the Uni Rebels 90-39. The Bombers hit 44% from the field (42/96) to the Rebels 24% (15/62). Howlett hit 12 of her total in the first quarter as the Bombers charged out to a game winning 24-12 lead. With only five players suited up for the game the Uni Rebels struggled to keep the game close and were adrift at halftime 40-27 despite their best efforts. Things only got worse for the Rebels after the half time break as the Bombers powered away, outscoring the Rebels 50-12 in the second half with Howlett, Sam Rioli (19pts, 10rebs & 5asst) and Kylie Duggan (14pts 6 asst) taking advantage of the undermanned Rebels. Jaylene Bonson hit 18 points with 7 rebounds and Lucy Adam had a double-double with 14pts and 11rebs. Danielle Totham also hit double figures for the Bombers with 11.

Lightning v Eagles

Lightning took advantage of Eagle turnovers to notch up a 60-47 victory for their fourth straight win of the Championship Season. Brittany Ward led from the front for Lightning with 17 points, 6 assists and a couple of steals. Ward had plenty of help with Kelli Sealy hitting 14, Jacinda Lambert 11 (+10rebs) and Deearne Lee 10. Michelle Friel was the lone standout for the Eagles with a game high 30 points. Apart from a bad start in the first quarter that Lightning won with a 15-5 run, the Eagles matched Lighting in all the columns except one and that was turnovers. Lighting collected 19 points off of 23 turnovers by the Eagles, pretty much the story of the game.

Palmerston v Ansett

Ansett won their second game in a row with a narrow 40-38 cliff hanger over Palmerston that shot them up into third place on the ladder. The Blues had to weather a strong fight back from Palmerston who had scrapped their way back from a first half 27-15 deficit to get within one bucket of taking the game into overtime. Eloise Drescher (15) and Carla Jones had set up the 12 point buffer with solid efforts in the first half before Palmerston launched an all out challenge to wrestle the lead away from the Blues. Drescher had put the Blues up 39-32 with 4:42 remaining in the game and then they didn’t score until Mikayla Haddow hit a free throw with 43 seconds left to make it 40-36. Rebecca Johnson then hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to leave Palmerston just two points adrift at 40-38. Kate Smythe from Palmerston did manage to steal the ball from Ansett, but full time sounded without Palmerston getting off a shot. Alexis Hohipa had a double for Palmerston with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

League Men –Razzle v Lightning

Jesse Bell hit 17 points to lead Lightning to a 63-48 win over Razzle. The win keeps them locked into a tie for first place on the ladder with an unblemished 3-0 record. Cameron Bailey hit 14, Tony Halikos 12 and Zac White put up a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Phil Collins hit a team high 18 for the Razzle who held the lead at half time 34-31 mainly due to the shooting of Collins who hit 15 of his 18. The second half was a different story as Lightning grabbed the initiative, running away in the third quarter with a 20-9 effort that put them up 51-43 heading into the last quarter. A low scoring defensive struggle in the last quarter went Lightning’s way as they closed out the game during a 12-5 run.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village hit a whopping 49% from the field to completely overwhelm the Uni Rebels during their runaway 110-67 win, their third in a row. Five players hit double figures for the Bombers with the league’s leading scorer, Travis Ellis, in fine form. Ellis hit 34 points on 61% shooting from the field as well as hauling in 24 rebounds. Liam MacLachlan was a busy man as well with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. A 30-21 first quarter run set the stage for the Bomber win as they enjoyed plenty of possession of the ball with a dominant showing on the boards, gathering in 73 rebounds to the Rebels 29. Jarrod Sheppard stood out for the Rebels with a team high 34 (including 5 treys) to share game high honours with Ellis. Marcus Ch’ng added 14 for the Rebels. Captain Michael MacLean (20), Jayden Adams (12) and Jett Sukcharden (10) rounded out the double figure scoring for the Bombers.

Eagles v Palmerston

The Eagles slipped into third place on the ladder with a convincing 88-58 win against Palmerston. Joseph Johnson kick started the Eagles in first quarter, hitting 9 of his 15 points to help the Birds to a handy 27-11 lead. Palmerston struck back in the second quarter behind the shooting of Tendayi Muyambi (19pts 10rebs), Mark Hamilton (13) and Robert Wilson (16) to outscore the Eagles 18-15 to trail 42-29 at the half. The third quarter proved pivotal as Eagle Buster Perkins lit up the scoreboard for 10 of his game high 25 during a dominant 22-6 run that pretty much wrapped up the game for the Eagles. Louis Ilton (who now heads back to school in the USA) put in another all round game with 17pts, 10rebs, 7 assists and 4 steals.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village & Lightning 3-0, Eagles 2-2, Ansett 2-1, & Uni Rebels 1-3, Palmerston 1-2 & Razzle 0-4
