League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Tracy Village Jets ran their consecutive winning streak out to 11 straight with a 82-23 thrashing of the Eagles. Guard Sam Rioli (21.4ppg) did most of the damage against the Birds with 32 points on 38% shooting from the field and 7 from 7 at the free throw line, plus 17 rebounds and 4 assists. Adding to the Eagle woes were Kylie Duggan (13.6ppg) with 16pts, 17rebs, Tara Maxwell with 15pts and 12 boards and Brianna Grazioli with 12 points. Katherine Hollis (10.4ppg) was the only Eagle in double figures with 10. The Eagles were a woeful 9% from the field with only 6 made shots from 70 attempts.

Ansett v Lightning

Ansett caused a minor upset with a nail biting 49-47 win against second placed Lightning. Sam Drescher (20.6ppg) had 26pts, 22 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Blues in attack while Jacinda Lambert from Lightning hit 20 points with 15 boards. The game was a real hair raiser from the second quarter onward. The Blues had jumped out to a 14-8 first quarter lead, but that slowly vanished as Lightning worked their way back into the game and it was basket for basket till the final siren. A number of lead changes in the last 5 minutes had put each team in a lead that only lasted seconds. Ansett were lucky to grab a 49-45 lead with 45 seconds remaining when Stacey McKenzie hit a basket from right under the hoop. Jacinda Lambert (18.2ppg) replied with a shot just inside the keyway with 3 seconds left, but time put a halt to Lightning’s chance to win. The Blues hit 35% from the field to Lightning’s 24% but the biggest letdown for Lightning had to be their 1 from 22 attempts from outside the arc…5%.

Palmerston v Uni Rebels

Palmerston celebrated their first win of the season against the Uni Rebels…56-50. Palmerston held a narrow 27-26 lead at half time, but after the break came out gangbusters and rolled off a run of 21-6 to break the game wide open. Nyssa Curwen (14pts,3 assists & 4 steals) and Alexis Hohipa (19 + 17 boards) ignited the run as Palmerston hit their straps offensively while putting the clamps on Rebel scoring. They then held off a strong challenge from the Rebels in the last quarter for the win despite being outscored 18-8. Rebel Jaylene Bonson top scored for the game with 23 while team mate Lucy Adam hit 12. Letticha Clarke grabbed 11 rebounds while collecting 4 assists and 5 steals.

League Men –Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

Tracy Village Jets now share the lead at the top of the ladder with Lightning after they dumped the Uni Rebels 79-63. The win put a halt to a Rebel 5 game winning streak that saw them come from fifth place all the way to the top of the ladder last week. The Bombers have reasserted their favouritism for the crown with the win and it was a superb team effort in the second quarter that got them home. The score was tied 16 all after one quarter. Jett Sukcharden opened the secoond quarter for the Bombers with a three pointer and they were away on a 27-11 run that proved to be the winning margin. Luke O’Hea (12), Bradley East, Travis Ellis (22 & 24rebs) and Sam White all chipped in during the run while the likes of Daniel Miller (12), Michael MacLean and Liam MacLachlan (11) put in a stearling effort on defense. Jarrod Sheppard (18.1ppg) hit a team high 19 for the Rebels with Lachlan Headlam adding 17 (+10rebs) and David Mecanovic 15. Ellis is leading the league in scoring with a 29.88ppg avg.

Lightning v Razzle

Lightning hit 40% from the field, dominated the boards and hit 24 points off of turnovers as they bolted past the Razzle 83-61. Razzle held a slim 15-14 lead after the first quarter, but after that it was all Lightning as they hit the front just 10 seconds into the second quarter on a basket by Zac White. It was catch-up for the green and gold after that and they failed to reply to the challenge. White (20ppg) led all scorers with a game high 19 and Jesse Bell (17ppg) & Cameron Bailey 14.5ppg) put up 16 each for the Lightning cause. Luke Kissick hit a team high 15 for the Razzle with Cameron McKenzie adding 10.

Palmerston v Eagles

The Eagles won their second game in a row with a close 79-72 effort against Palmerston. The Eagles looked to be on track for an easy win, leading 43-29 at the half, but the third quarter almost proved their undoing as Palmerston charged back into the game with a 22-9 run that got them to within just one point heading into the last quarter 52-51. Aaron Simpson (14pts 12rebs), Robert Wilson (12) and Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson (16 @ 18.4ppg) led the comeback and it almost paid dividends, but the Eagles regained the momentum in the last quarter behind the hot handed Buster Perkins (21 @ 25.7ppg) who hit back to back treys within the first minute to launch the Birds on a 27-21 run that gave them the game. Shane Harrison was also a big part of the final Eagle run picking up 7 of his 13 for the game. Eagle Shonsdale Robinson led all scorers with a game high 24 and Joseph Johnson (15ppg) hit 12 while Tom Hemsley from Palmerston also hit 12.
