League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Ansett shocked Tracy Village Jets 52-48 to send the Bombers to their first loss of the season, ending their unbeaten streak at 11. Sam Drescher (21) from the Blues took overall game scoring honours with 21 points and she had plenty of help in the second half from Lauren Flanegan and Amelia Shanahan. A low scoring first quarter put the Blues up 8-4 before the Bombers found the range through guards Sam Rioli (20) and Kylie Duggan (12) who combined for 12 points during a 16-11 run that gave the Jets a half time lead of 20-19. Drescher hit the first 7 points of the third quarter as the Blues wrestled the lead away from the Bombers to lead 35-33 with a quarter to go. The Blues then managed to hang on for the win with Drescher firing in 4 of the last 6 points for Ansett.

Palmerston v Lightning

Lightning tore apart the hopes of Palmerston with a 77-25 win. Brittany Ward broke out of a minor scoring slump to ram home a game high 24 with Kelli Sealy adding 16 and Jacinda Lambert 12. Lightning led with a 15-8 first quarter run followed by a 19-7 effort in the second quarter to take a commanding 34-15 lead at half time. The second half proved to be much of the same with Lighting outscoring Palmerston 43-10.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels caused a minor upset of sorts when they edged past the Eagles 41-38. The win keeps them close enough to the top four should any above them falter. The game was so close their either side had a bona fide chance of winning. The half time score was locked up at 18 each and during the second half the Rebels just managed to keep in front of the Eagles through the efforts of Jaylene Bonson who claimed game high points with 18. Katherine Hollis hit 11 for the Eagles with Lillian Willams dropping in 9, but it wasn’t enough to claim the points. The Eagles and Ansett share fourth place on the ladder, just two games clear of the Rebels.

League Men –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

It was not a good night for the Tracy Village Jets basketball club as not only did their women lose their first game of the season, but the Bombers men lost to the Eagles 82-75 for only their third loss of the competition. The Bombers shot out to a handy looking 25-11 first quarter lead behind the good shooting of Sam White, Travis Ellis and Daniel Miller, but that lead evaporated over the next two quarters as the Birds clawed their way back. By the time the last quarter started the score was 60-58 in favour of the Bombers after the Eagles had put together a second and third quarter run of 47-35 as Shonsdale Robinson (30), Buster Perkins (20) and Joseph Johnson (16) put the Birds into a winning position. By the time the end game arrived, with unlikely hero’s Chris Peters and Matt McMahon sealing the win for the Eagles, the Bombers were left with a few unanswered questions as to what went wrong after such a strong start to the game. Ellis was on target for the Bombers with a game high 32 (including 5 treys) and team mates Liam MacLachlan & Luke O’Hea hit 11 each.

Lightning v Palmerston

Palmerston upset high flying Lightning in a close one 86-83 for just their third win of the season and none as big as this. Robbie Wilson led all scorers with 25 as Palmerston bounced back from a disappointing first quarter (when they were outgunned 21-9) to stage a remarkable comeback that was capped off with a huge 41-15 run in the last quarter. Trailing 68-45 with one quarter to go Palmerston charged out behind the hot handed trio of Wilson, Aaron Simpson (20) and Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson (20) who combined for 48 of Lightning’s second half point total (55). Robbie Wilson hit the last 8 points for Lightning from the free throw line! Zac White led Lightning with 22 followed by Jesse Bell on 13 and Tom Godwin on 12.

Ansett v Razzle

Ansett shut down the Razzle 67-54 in a close encounter that didn’t really play out until the second half. Ansett held a narrow 32-30 lead at the half. Tightening up their defense in the second half the Blues slowly pulled away from the green and gold through the offense of Matt Hunt (23), Daniel Florance (15) and Ross Vasic (13). Cameron McKenzie (16) and Pascoe Lawler (14) put up a gallant fight for Razzle, but in the end the Blues held strong defensively to claim their 7th win of the season, giving them a share of a three way tie for first place with Tracy Village and Lighting.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets, Ansett & Lightning 7-3, Uni Rebels 6-4, Eagles 5-6, Palmerston 3-7 & Razzle 0-11
