League Men –Lightning v Eagles

The Eagles finally won a game against Lightning this season and it was a tense 88-86 victory that was concluded in the last 10 seconds of the game from the free throw line. Buster Perkins was once again the man of the moment. Much as he did in the Eagles win against the Rebels in their previous game, Perkins sunk the winning baskets from the charity stripe with only seconds remaining in the game. The Eagles had set themselves up with what looked like a winning 67-59 lead heading into the last quarter, but Lightning lifted in the first 3 minutes of the quarter with Cameron Bailey (15ppg) and Zac White (20.8ppg) igniting a 12-0 run to give Lightning a 71-67 lead with 7:27 left in the game. The Eagles came right back with 5 unanswered points to close within one point and it was ‘game on’ until Perkins sank two free throws with just 10 seconds left. Shonsdale Robinson (27.2ppg) led the Eagles for the fourth game in a row, this time with 32 points and Joseph Johnson (15.4ppg) added 13. Perkins (24.4ppg) finished with 28 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. White led all scorers with 34 points and 11 boards. Bailey hit 22 with 15 boards and Jesse Bell had 17 and 12. Lightning hit 22/31 from the charity stripe…White perfect with 12/12. The loss by Lightning put a bit of a dampener on a career milestone achieved by point guard Chris Charman who played his 400th League game.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett bounced back from their loss last week to the Jets with a thumping 78-54 win against the fading Uni Rebels who have now lost their fourth game in a row. Daniel Florance has been on fire during the last few rounds and this game was no different. His stats read: game high 28pts, 18rebs, 3 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots. The Blues flew off to an 18-10 first quarter lead that they added to in the next two quarters to lead 62-33 with one quarter to go. The guns for the Rebels were kept pretty quiet as the Blues clamped down on defense. Rebel Justin Eckhardt only managed 10 points, well below his 26.4ppg and Jarrod Sheppard who has been averaging 17.3ppg was limited to just 8. Marcus Ch’ng finished as top scorer for the Rebels with 11 with Lachlan Headlam chipping in with 10. Florance (19.7ppg) enjoyed support from Matt Hunt (16.6ppg) who hit 11 with 9 assists and 5 steals while John King hit 14 along with 10 boards. The Blues hit 45% from the field to the Rebels 35.

Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

The Tracy Village Jets regained first place on the ladder following Lightning’s loss to the Eagles. The Bombers took an early 14-11 lead against the Razzle and kept adding on to the lead in the last three quarters for an comfortable 66-50 win. Playing a steady game and slamming the door on all challenges by the Razzle to get back into the match, the Bombers never really looked in doubt. Travis Ellis (27.9ppg) put up a game high 19 points with 14 rebounds while Daniel Miller and Bradley East hit 14 each. Miller also had 4 assists and 3 steals. Henry Bui (11.7ppg) led the green and gold with 15 points 6 boards and 3 assists. Team mate James Panton helped out with 11 rebounds and 8pts.

Ladder:                               Tracy Village Jets 10-3, Lightning 9-4, Ansett 8-4, Eagles 7-6, Uni Rebels 6-7, Palmerston 4-7 & Razzle 0-13

Next Week Round 16:           Uni Rebels v Razzle 6:15pm, Ansett v Eagles 7:45pm & Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston 9:15pm, bye: Lightning
