League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

The top two teams in the Women’s League tuned up for a meeting in the major semi-final to be played next week with minor premiers Tracy Village Jets winning against Lightning 70-59. The Bombers won their 7th straight game and ran their record to 19-1 for the season. Lightning got their usual production from Jacinda Lambert (18 @ 17.4ppg) and Brittany Ward (16 @ 16.6ppg), but it wasn’t enough to get them past the efforts from Bombers Sam Rioli, Tikesa Docherty-Cole, Jenna Lew Fatt and Kylie Duggan who all hit double figures for the game. The Bombers grabbed a slime 14-11 lead after one quarter, pushed it out to 33-26 at the half and then put in a second half run of 37-33 to take the points. The Jets have won all previous meetings between the two clubs and all but this one have been won by 7 or less points. Rioli finished with 17 @ 19.7ppg, Docherty-Cole & Lew Fatt 12 each and Duggan 10 @ 14.1ppg.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett took the Uni Rebels apart with a 83-45 win that was their 10th out of the last 11 games. Sam Drescher (22.4ppg) and Nichole Silmon 17.8ppg) once again led the team in scoring with 24 and 23 respectively with Kia Bond adding 14 (including 4 treys). The Blues wasted no time taking control of the game with a 28-16 first quarter outburst followed by an even bigger 23-11 run in the second quarter that for all purposes put the game out of reach of the Rebels by half time. Justine Schmidt led the Rebels with a game high 16 with Delsey Ah Wang supporting with 11. The in-form Blues will now take on the Eagles in the minor semi-final next Tuesday night knowing that they have beaten the Birds 3 games out of four this season.

Eagles v Palmerston

The Eagles survived a last gasp effort from Palmerston as the Birds won 42-40 to end their      regular season campaign.  Young Michelle Friel (18.3ppg) scored more than half of the Eagle points with a 23 point rush, including the last five Eagle points from the charity stripe (the only points scored in the last quarter). Elyse Videon added 8. Palmerston was led by Chi Adachi who hit a team high 12 with Alexia Hohipa adding 8.

Ladder:                                  Tracy Village Jets 19-1, Lightning & Ansett 13-7, Eagles 8-12, Uni Rebels 5-15, & Palmerston 1-19

Next Week Semi-finals:    Tracy Village Jets v Lightning (Court 1) 6:30pm, Ansett v Eagles (Court 2) 6:30pm

League Men –Lightning v Uni Rebels

Lightning capped off one of the best seasons for the club by claiming the DBA Championship Season minor premiership for the first time since entering the League back in the 1997 Challenge Season. Lightning knocked off the Uni Rebels 98-81 to claim the title and have now turned their focus to winning the Grand Final. Zac White (22 @ 21.7ppg) and Jesse Bell (18ppg) and Chris Charman (18ea) led the charge with a combined 58 points between them as they jumped out to a 24-17 first quarter lead that they never gave up. Guard Charman proved to be unknown factor in this game as he hit six treys for 18 points, his best showing of the season. He will be a factor in how far the Lightning can progress in the playoffs. The Rebels got 23 points from Lachlan Headlam (13.9ppg) and 22 from Jarrod Sheppard (18ppg) but the scoring output from the rest of the team didn’t manifest itself as they struggled to keep up with Lightning. Lightning match up with Ansett next week in what probably will be another close encounter of the fourth kind. Lightning won the regular season games 2-1, winning the first game by 20, the second by 3 and losing the last by 7.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Ansett squeaked past the Tracy Village Jets 71-69 in a tune-up for the playoffs. The Bombers had a couple of opportunities with about 30 seconds remaining but failed to capitalize. The Blues held a 36-30 half time lead thanks to the strong first half input from point guard Matt Hunt who hit 14 of his team and game high 20 points. After the break the Bombers flew back into contention to wrestle away the lead for a slim 49-48 advantage with only one quarter of play left. Down the stretch in the last few minutes John King (16.6ppg) and Daniel Florance (20.4ppg) took charge for the Blues, hitting the last 15pts between them while helping to hold out the Bombers. Florance finished with 16, King 11 and Matt Barrett also 11. Liam MacLachlan (11ppg) led the Bombers with 19, Alex Weetra 15, Michael MacLean 14 and Travis Ellis 12.

Palmerston v Razzle

The Razzle got just their second win of the competition with a hard fought 66-62 win over Palmerston. Razzle’s James Panton (6.2ppg) hit a season high 23 in leading the green and gold to victory. Cameron McKenzie (16), Pascoe Lawler (11) and Robert Oliver (10) added double figures in support of Panton during the win. The Razzle leapt out to a 32-28 half time lead and pumped it out to 54-46 after three quarters of play and then hung on while Palmerston tried to scramble back into the game. Palmerston did outscore the Razzle 16-12 in the last frame, but it wasn’t enough to overhaul them for the win. Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson (20ppg) finished off the season in fine fashion with a game high 30pts. Aaron Simpson (11.6ppg) had 12 and Tendayi Muyambi 10.

Ladder:                                   Lightning & Ansett & 14-4, Tracy Village Jets 11-7, Rebels & Eagles 9-9, Palmerston 4-14 & Razzle 2-15

Next Week Semi-finals:         Lightning v Ansett (Court 1) 8:00pm, Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels (Court 2) 8:00pm
