League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Tracy Village Jets continued their winning ways with a 71-42 win against the Eagles on Friday night at the DBA Stadium. Notching up a 12th straight victory going back to last year’s Championship Season the Bombers took a narrow 15-11 lead after one quarter of play and then kicked in the after burners in the second quarter piling on the points during a 27-6 run that effectively put the game out of reach for the Eagles. Kylie Duggan stood out for the Bombers with a double-double, grabbing 17 rebounds (11 offensive) and putting up 12 points along with 4 steals & assists. Leading the way was Danielle Totham with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Things were tough for the Eagles without playmaking guard Michelle Friel and it showed in the 38 turnovers committed by the Birds. Lillian Williams led the Eagles with 16 and Laila Valent lent support with 10. For the record, the Jets put up 113 shots to the Eagles 59 and the Bombers hit 32 points off of those Eagle turnovers.

Ansett v Lightning

Amelia Shanahan hit 57% from the field for a game high 27 points as she led Ansett to a 61-44 win over the Lightning. Shanahan hit 13 of 23 attempts and also ripped down 15 rebounds and had 4 blocked shots during an inspirational game that leaves the Blues with a clean sheet with two wins on the trot. The Blues held Lightning to single digits in the first two quarters to take a commanding 36-15 half time lead and cruised for the rest of the game. Lightning picked up the pace in the third quarter during a 16-13 run, but the margin was too much to make up. Sam Drescher added her support to Shanahan with 25pts, 11rebs, 8 assists and 2 steals. Tahnee Lew Fatt and Kelli Sealy hit 11 each for Lightning with Sarah Carbone grabbing 9 rebounds.

Palmerston v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels got their first win of the season at the expense of Palmerston. The Rebel’s won a squeaker 51-47, holding off a strong challenge from Palmerston in the last two minutes of the game. Rebel Justine Schmidt, who led all scorers with 20 points, checked Palmerstons late run with a couple of free throws with only seconds left on the clock. Palmerstons Reina Shean had twice stolen the ball in the last minute and a half and dropped a shot with 24 seconds remaining to get Palmerston within two at 49-47, but they missed their next attempt and lost possession. Schmidt was then fouled and stepped up to the free throw line to pot the two freebies for the win. Jaylene Boundry hit 11 points and grabbed 9 boards in support, while Jenny Low Choy and Chantelle Lee combined for 21 rebounds. Christine Cooper led Palmerston with 17 points and 11 rebounds with Morgan Johnston hitting 10 and Brielle Felton hauling in 13 boards.

Ladder:   Tracy Village Jets & Ansett 2-0, Lightning & Uni Rebels 1-1, Eagles, & Palmerston 0-2

League Men –Ansett v Eagles

The Eagles upset the reigning champs, Ansett, with a solid 97-84 effort behind a game high 30 points from Shonsdale Robinson. Robinson and Joseph Johnson got the Birds off and running with a 27-20 first quarter followed by a dominant 25-9 second quarter that gave the Eagles a considerable 52-29 half time lead. The Blues did stage a rally in the third quarter behind a trio of treys by Ross Vasic (all up 6/12 from the arc) and some solid defense from the team, but the Eagles flew back in the last quarter to outscore the Blues 29-25 to seal the win. Johnson finished with 28 points, Buster Perkins 19, Jesse Williams-Hook 12 and Chris Stewart pulled down 14 boards for the Birds while Daniel Florance and Matt Hunt led the Ansett charge with 23 and 22 points respectively with Vasic adding 20. Florance also had 14rebs. The Eagles hit 48% from the field to the Blues 34%.

Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston

The Tracy Village Jets knocked off Palmerston 81-56 to hang on to a share of first place on the ladder after two rounds. Travis Ellis once again led the side with 22 points and 10 boards and he had plenty of help from Liam MacLachlan with 20 and Phil Collins with 11. Palmerston was led by new recruit Jesse Bell who has transferred from Lightning. Bell finished up with a game high 33, hitting 41% from the field and 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Adrien Laborde chipped in with 10 points. Shooting from the field led to Palmerstons downfall as they hit only 29% while the Bombers hit 40%. The Jets got 54 of their points in the paint.

Uni Rebels v Razzle

Razzle slipped past the Uni Rebels 79-66 for their first win of the competition. Four players hit double figures for the green and gold with James Panton taking honours with 25 and 14 rebounds. Billy-Ray Roberts added 20 and 12, William McClay & Scott Adam 13 each. Razzle jumped out to a 22-14 lead after one quarter and held on to that buffer throughout the game, closing down all challenges thrown out by the Rebels. Rebel guard Marcus Ch’ng hit a season high 27 to lead all scorers and pulled in 11 boards as well. Simon Hamill hit the courts again after a lay-off to add 15 points and 14 boards in support, but that was pretty much the extent of the Rebel offense. The Rebels had charged back into the game at the start of the third quarter and led 43-41 with 5:53 left in the quarter but failed to maintain the momentum. Razzle grabbed back the lead shortly thereafter and took control for the win.

Ladder:           Tracy Village Jets & Eagles 2-0, Ansett & Razzle 1-1, Rebels 0-2, Lightning 0-1 & Palmerston 0-1
