Semi-Finals

League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Grand Final favourites and minor premiers Tracy Village Jets romped to a 69-51 win against Ansett in the major semi-final to advance directly to the grand final on the 22nd of June. Four players hit double figures for the Bombers with Kylie Duggan (12.9ppg) hitting 14, Tikesa Docherty-Cole 13 and Keisha Tinley & Tara Maxwell (12.2ppg) on 12 each. The Jets held a slim one point lead at halftime 32-31, but after the break the Bombers took off on a 15-5 run for a 47-36 advantage with just a quarter to play. The Blues tried to get back into the game, but the Bombers answered all the challenges and pulled away even more in the last quarter during a 22-15 run. Sam Drescher (21ppg) from the Blues top scored for the game with 29 points (21 in the first half), but she was the only player in double figures for Ansett.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

The surprise package of the season, the Uni Rebels, continued their advance forward with a 47-43 win against the Lightning to book a trip to the Preliminary Final next week against Ansett. The Rebels have turned their season around after a miserable start to the competition…they were 1-5 after six rounds of play. By knocking out last season’s runners-up the Rebels now have a bona fide chance at making it through to the grand final. Rebel Jaylene Bonson (13.6ppg) came out firing to hit a season high 27 as she led the Rebels back from an 8 point deficit in the last quarter during a 21-9 run to claim victory. Bonson had 14 of her total points in the last quarter. Shaan Mitchell added 7 points in support during the fourth quarter come-back. Fleet footed guard Lucy Murray (6.3ppg) took scoring honours for the Lightning with 11 while Kelli Sealy (12.1ppg) potted 9.

Ladder:                                            Tracy Village Jets 15-1, Ansett & Uni Rebels 9-7, Lightning 7-9, Eagles 4-10-0-1 & Palmerston 3-12

Next week Thursday 20 June: Preliminary Final    Ansett v Uni Rebels 6:15pm

League Men – Eagles v Ansett

Ansett upset minor premiers Eagles 65-45 to go straight into the grand final. The last time the Blues were in a Challenge Season grand final was 2008 when they lost out to the Eagles. This major semi-final was a blowout of epic proportions. Daniel Florance and Tom Hunt led a first half assault that put the Blues up 32-10 at half time, well and truly putting the Eagles in a deep hole. By the end of the third quarter the Blues were up by 32 points at 62-30 with the Eagles unable to mount any kind of sustained challenge. Florance (23.6ppg) finished up with a game high 24 and Hunt (10.1ppg) hit 15. Shane Harrison had 14 for the demoralized Eagles and Joseph Johnson 11. The minor premiers are now behind the eight ball with back to back 20 point losses and if they want to book a spot in the grand final they need to regroup before next Thursday’s preliminary final against their nemesis the Tracy Village Jets who are on a late season roll.

Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston

The Tracy Village Jets ended the fairy tale run to the grand final by Palmerston as the Bombers edged them out 62-59 in a battle that went down to the wire. Palmerston led 34-28 at half time, but the Bombers stormed back in the third quarter with a 23-11 run led by Travis Ellis who hit 13 of his game high 24 during the come-back. Leading 51-45 at the start of the last quarter the Bombers had to dig deep to hold off the fast finishing Palmerston who outscored the Jets 14-11. Phil Collins put out the challenge with a three pointer to finish the scoring for the Bombers and end the season for Palmerston. Collins (14.4ppg) added 13 points in support of Ellis (19.4ppg) and Liam MacLachlan had 10. Jesse Bell (27.7ppg) led all scorers from Palmerston with 18 while Aaron Simpson (15.9ppg) & Robbie Wilson capped off their season with 14 each.

Ladder:                                           Eagles 13-4, Ansett 12-3-1, Tracy Village Jets 12-4, Palmerston 8-7-1, Uni Rebels 5-11, Razzle 3-13 & Lightning 2-14

Next week Thursday 20 June: Preliminary Final    Eagles v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm
