League Women Round 8 – Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets powered past Ansett 67-29 to run their winning streak to seven and remain perched atop the ladder after five games of the Women’s League competition. Abby Cubillo set a season scoring high for the ladies with a 35 point outburst that would have been enough to beat the Blues on her own. Ansett only trailed by 4 after one quarter 14-10, but the Bombers lifted their game in the second quarter to take a 28-15 half time lead. The lead did not change after an evenly fought third quarter before the Bombers again stepped up in the last stanza with a 29-4 run to finish off the Blues. Tania Dhu lent support for Cubillo with 10 while Tamiyah Perkins led the Blues with 12.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels dumped the Lightning 94-16 to grab a share of second place on the ladder. The loss was one of the worst in Lightning history and doesn’t bode well for them for the remainder of the season. Tamara Sheppard led the Rebels with a season high 25 points with Jaylene Bonson adding 16.

Eagles v Palmerston

Palmerston continued its good form with a 54-43 win over the Eagles that lifted them into a share of second place with the Eagles and the Uni Rebels. Stephanie Pye (17) and former Eagle Christine Cooper (11) caused most of the headache for the Birds as they combined for 28 points in leading the Power to the win. The Birds were ahead at half time 23-17 thanks to the hot handed shooting of Michelle Friel who hit 14 of her team and game high 20, but, the Power hit back in the second half to outscore the Birds 37-20 for the win.

League Men –Eagles v Palmerston

James Silvie knocked down 30 points to lead the Eagles to a convincing 90-53 victory against Palmerston. The win put the Birds into a share of second place on the ladder with Ansett who were pipped by the Rebels later in the evening. The Eagles built up a ten point lead by half time to go into the break leading 41-31, but after the break they really took off, outscoring the Power in the second half 49-22. Silvie had plenty of help with Jesse Williams-Hook putting up 20 points and Henry Bui chipping in with 16. Tendai Muyambi led the Power with 14 and Braden Robertson added 13.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

The Uni Rebels staged a comeback victory over Ansett to squeak past last season’s Grand Finalist runner-ups 65-60. Rebel John King (who played for Ansett in that grand final) led the charge with a team and game high 30 points (including 4 treys). Trailing 31-18 at the half the Rebels lifted their defense to run home winners with a 47-29 outburst that overhauled the Blues early in the last quarter. Matt Hunt led the Blues with 20 points with added support coming from Ross Vasic (17) and Matt’s brother Tom (12).

Razzle v Lightning

The Lightning is sitting on top of the ladder after slipping past the tenacious Razzle 69-62. The close fought match was up in the air until the last quarter when the Lightning put together a 19-15 run that got them across the line. A five point half time lead for Lightning fell to just three points heading into the last quarter, but they regrouped and held on for the win. Thomas Godwin (18), Karsten Oltrop (13) and Cameron Bailey & Fege Harry (11 each) did most of the scoring for the Lightning. Rob Oliver from the green and gold took game scoring honours with 29 points, but only one other Razzle hit double figures…Ben Cowcher had 11.
