League Women Round 11 –Palmerston v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels knocked off Palmerston 55-47 to leap-frog over the Power into second place on the ladder after Round 12 of the DBA Challenge Season. Edith Boundry (4.8ppg), Carlee Ah Mat (7.5ppg) and court captain Jaylene Bonson (15ppg) led the charge for the Rebels with 11, 10 and 9 points respectively. The Rebels jumped out to 21-10 lead after one quarter of play and it looked like they were in for a big scoring night, but through the effort of Christine Cooper the Power pulled back to within four points at half time 29-25 to be squarely in the game. After the break the Power continued to surge and by the end of the third quarter the Rebels were just hanging on to a one point lead at 44-43. The challenge by the Power failed however to produce the goods as the Rebels stiffened up on defense and added 11 points to just 4 for the Power to put the game out of their reach. Cooper (12.5ppg) was the only Palmerston player to reach double figures with 11.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The League leading Tracy Village Jets easily accounted for the Eagles 57-25. The Bombers limited the Birds to single digits in each quarter as they ran their win streak out to 12 since the end of last season’s Championship competition. Erin Geer (14 @ 9.3ppg), Abby Cubillo (12 @ 16.8ppg) and Tania Dhu (11 @ 10.5ppg) put a lot of pressure on the Eagles with their consistent shooting and tough defense. For the Eagles it was their third loss in a row leaving them in fourth place on the ladder with a Lightning outfit back on the winning trail and only two games behind them. Michelle Friel (16.2ppg) led the Birds with 9.

Lightning v Ansett

Lightning bumped off Ansett 55-36 for their second win in a row. Import Kymira Woodberry hit a season high 28 and Julia Woods added 10. The Blues from Ansett sent a fright through the Lightning camp when they shot to the lead at half time 25-21 thanks to the hot handed Elizabeth Paice (8ppg) who dropped in 10 of her 14 points in the first half. After the break, however, the Lightning struck back, shutting down the Blues offense, holding them to just 11 second half points while hitting 34 to blow the game wide open. Woodberry (25ppg) has added another dimension to the Lightning team that makes them a legitimate playoff contender. They have a big test next week against the Uni Rebels.

League Men –Lightning v Eagles

James Silvie led a determined Eagle outfit to an 83-71 victory over the Lightning to grab a percentage leading spot at the top of the ladder, surpassing the Lightning in the process. Silvie (23.3ppg) hit a game and team high 32 points with teammates Justin McKey (18 @ 6.2ppg) and Tore Wallden (10) making a huge contribution in support. Plenty of fouls by both sides leading to 17 points from the charity stripe for the Birds and only 8 for the Lightning. The Eagles only led by 6 at half time, 39-33, but the third quarter proved pivotal for the Birds as they outgunned the Lightning 20-10 for a 59-43 lead with just a quarter to play. The Lightning made a late charge, but it wasn’t enough to overhaul the Birds as they notched up their third win in a row. Cameron Bailey (16.6ppg) was in good form for the Lightning with a team leading 22 points followed by Craig Martin (15.3ppg) on 13 and Tom Godwin (16.8ppg) on 11.

Palmerston v Tracy Village Jets

Palmerston snuck past the seriously undermanned Tracy Village Jets 68-54 handing the Bombers their fifth loss of the season! Power man Bradley Jachmann (14.6ppg) lit up the scoreboard for a season high 20 points with support from Aaron Simpson (15 @ 13.6ppg) and Ben Muvirimi (10). The Power handed the Bombers one of their worst first quarter starts in a long time, outscoring them 23-5, with Jachmann hitting 10 of his total in the quarter. The Power led 32-18 at the half and they were never seriously threatened for the remainder of the game. If it wouldn’t have been for the accurate shooting outside the three point arc by Darren Weetra (5 treys – 20 points @ 15ppg) the score line would have looked pretty sad for the Bombers. Jett Sukcharoen (15 @ 8.8ppg) and Henry Callander (13 @ 3ppg) added to the Jets cause. Half of the Jets points came from outside the arc.

Ansett v Razzle

The trio of Matt Hunt, Matthew Van Pelt and Daniel Florance combined for 41 points to lead Ansett past the Razzle 77-57. The win keeps the Blues right on the tail of the two teams leading the competition. The Blues are only 3 points from taking over top spot on the ladder and they have played two games less than them. The Razzle actually led 12-11 at the end of one quarter, but from that point on the Blues outscored them 66-45 to run out winners. For the record everyone on the Blues team scored 6 or more points while the opposition was sadly lacking support for Rob Oliver (22 @ 16.8ppg), David Carroll (15) and Brendan Dell (11 @ 11ppg). For the Blues Hunt (17.1ppg) finished up with 15, Van Pelt 14 and Florance 12 @ 16.5ppg.

Ladder after Round 12:                 Eagles & Lightning 6-3, Ansett 6-1, Palmerston 4-4, Uni Rebels 3-4, Tracy Village Jets 2-5 & Razzle 1-8

2 May Round 13:                           Uni Rebels v Eagles 6:15pm, Ansett v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Lightning v Palmerston 9:15pm. Bye: Razzle

Round 3, 6 & 7 have been cancelled (1 game from Rd 6 was played…Lightning beat Palmerston).
