Preliminary finals

League Women – Eagles v Ansett

Molly Althouse hit a career high 18 points to lead the Eagles to a hard fought 58-52 win over Ansett to fly into a Grand Final encounter with the Tracy Village Jets next Saturday. A balanced team effort got the Birds over the line against a ‘never-say-die’ Blues outfit that pushed the Eagle right to the final buzzer. The Blues were up at halftime 25-22, but after the break the Eagles put together a run of 18-9 to turn things in their favour. The six point advantage they held going into the last quarter proved to be enough for the win despite the strong finish from the Blues. Althouse (6.8ppg) had support from Trish Graham (12.6ppg) with 10 and Michelle Friel (8.5ppg) with 9. Tamiyah Perkins (15.1ppg) led the Blues with a game high 24 with Ruta Valiulyte adding 11.

Men

League Men – Lightning v Palmerston Power

Lightning booked a ticket in the Grand Final with a thrilling 93-92 win over the Palmerston Power. Dylan De Santis from the Lighting was the hero of the night after he sank a free throw with just 11 seconds remaining in the contest to give the Lightning the victory. The Power had all the answers with 4:32 left in the game when they held an 11 point lead after an 11-0 run sparked by Fisto Bizima & Jesse Bell. The score was 88-83 in Power’s favour, but the momentum shifted 20 seconds later when De Santis nailed a trey and Craig Martin added a two-pointer. The game hung in the balance at that point. When Steven Ting from Lightning hit a basket with 2:01 remaining the Lightning hit the front again 90-89. The Power still had a shot at winning when Bizima hit a trey to tie it up at 92all with 18 seconds to go. But it was then that De Santis stepped in to play his part in the nail-biting finish. Alex Kisselev (27.9ppg) led the Lightning with 30, Martin (27.3ppg) finished with 27, De Santis 12 @ 8pts ppg and Cameron Bailey 10. For the Power Bell (23.5ppg) hit 27, Bizima 24 @ 13.5ppg, Thomas Godwin 16 and Ben Streeter 14.
