Not a day you would like to repeat with 3 sides down, 1 draw and a walkover....it doesn’t get much worse than that.
From 2013 Peter Woodbridge and I will share the facts of the days play, with Peter concentrating on the first 3 sides, in addition to his local newspaper report, and I will cover the next 3 sides of Saturday Pennant. Today, my job is easy....I have only 2 sides to cover.
Pete's Roundup
"Edithvale Bowling Club had a disappointing day on Saturday, with only the third side winning and the sixths having a tie. The firsts were home to Oakleigh South, started very slowly and could not recover. Albert Chung’s team made a second big comeback in two weeks, this time from 8 shots down to win by 3 shots. Billy Morton’s team recovered well from 5-11 down to go 16-11 up, and ended up winning by 4 shots. Peter Woodbridge’s crew led early, and then drew away to a 9 shot win, with the big skip making two great saves. John Bryant’s four were hanging in there at 6-13, but dropped the last ten ends to lose by 25 shots. DIV 2 SEC 7: Bentleigh 3-63 Mentone 2 15-73, Cheltenham 2 0-62 Richmond Union 2 18-83, Hampton RSL 18-111 Coatesville 2 0-72, Edithvale 6-73 South Oakleigh 12-82, Hampton 2 2-56 Armadale 16-86.
The seconds lost a tight game at Noble Park by 13 shots, with Don Chambers’ team winning ten of their last twelve ends for an excellent 17 shot win. The thirds bounced back from a narrow loss last week to defeat Berwick by 41 shots at home. Walter Trupke’s four again played strongly for a 21 shot win, but even this effort was overshadowed by Wayne Clarke’s crew only giving up six singles in a 25 shot rout. The fourths lost narrowly at Hampton Park, despite a strong effort by Joe Musco’s four. The sixths had an exciting tie at Waverley Golf, with Jeanette Barrett’s team enjoying another solid victory." DIV 3 SEC 7: Cranbourne 4 2-78 Narre Warren 16-99, Carrum 17-105 Pakenham 2 1-54, Noble Park 2 14-89 Edithvale 2 4-76, Parkdale 4-70 Berwick 4 14-73, Hampton Park 16-94 Burden Park 3 2-68.
DIV 4 SEC 7: Hampton 3 14-83 Sandringham 4-73, Edithvale 3 16-94 Berwick 6 2-53, Black Rock 14-87 Bentleigh 2 4-74, Beaumaris 2 16-102 Chelsea 2-59, Moorabbin 16-81 Mordialloc 2 2-73.
Our Div 6 Section 6 side played away at Hampton Park, who we know are very hard to beat on their own territory. Our side did suffer a loss, but 5 down at Hampton Park is really “a very good result!” It was 4th on the ladder vs. "us" in 6th spot. Joe Musco (S), Bob Baird (L), Phil Westmore (2nd) and Bob Davies (3rd) had a very good day winning 23-15 for +8; the other teams losses however came to-13. The Costolloe team is improving every week and only lost by 1 today...and that’s a very good sign. Chris Wardle and team were down 3 (also not too shabby) but not enough to cover a 9 shot loss by Roger Williams and team, even tho’ the team played well and tried hard all day.DIV 6 SEC 6: Burden Park 4 16-91 Waverley Golf 3 2-58, Hampton Park 3 16-80 Edithvale 4 2-75, Bye 0-0 Berwick 7 0-0, Mulgrave CC 7 0-52 Keysborough 3 18-109, Eastwood Golf 3 2-69 Glen Waverley 5 16-84.
Our Div 6 Section 7 side did not play today. Gee, we sure did miss you lot in the club house tonight...it just wasn't the same! It's very sad that the dedicated and committed bowlers of this side are forced into giving a walkover or play short week after week when you note the number of "former" Pennant players unwilling to chip in because they feel they are better than Div 6. Let's stop the rot, get on board.... play for Edithvale and support our fellow Clubmates who are just as entitled to a game of Pennant as any other player is, regardless of the Div they play in. Show them how unselfish you can be and let them know you care.DIV 6 SEC 7: Chelsea 2 0-64 Parkdale 2 18-100, Oakleigh 2 16-92 Cheltenham 5 2-70, SOC 2 18-92 Coatesville 4 0-69, Edithvale 5 0-(-15) Brighton Beach 18-15, Bentleigh 3 16-72 Mulgrave CC 8 2-68.
Our Div 10 Section 1 Side had a draw with, Jeanette Barrett (and team) up 13 and Claire Baskett (and team) down 13. Jeanette was "Queen of the Even ends" winning nearly all of those (and most of the odds as well) making it a "nightmare" day for the opposition, particularly the opposition skip. Judy Marchant's jack placements and the enouragement of the ever jubilant "Dancing" Di Cameron and Rae (of Sunshine) Gibbs helped the team secure a 13 shot win on a patchy and heavy Waverley Golf green. Claire Baskett, suffering a back injury, was well supported by Mary Weston as third, Sally King, Second and Gail Hamilton as Lead, but alas they played against a very competitive skip experiencing "a day out". To their credit they rallied to come from 17 down on the 17th to pick up 5 to 1 over the last 4 ends. A great effort which entitled them to a half share of the points on offer. Well done! DIV 10 SEC 1: Bentleigh 5 0-30 Yarraville/Footscray 8 14-51, Waverley Golf 4 7-36 Edithvale 6 7-36, Essendon 6 0-15 Berwick 8 14-64, Glen Waverley 7 14-42 Blackburn 7 0-28.
