The Final of the Men’s Club Championship Pairs and a Semi Final of the Mixed Sets Play Pairs tested all players today with tricky winds that moved the playable hand from side to side, and in a temperature that seemed beyond today’s prediction.
The Men’s Final was a close affair between Robert Darby/John Bryant (Skip) and John Clark/Michael Cameron (Skip). The Bryant team picked up 3 in the first 2 ends but were soundly caught level on the 4th. John Bryant played some brilliant conversion shots throughout, as did Michael Cameron while Robert Darby corralled the jack on many occasions at the chagrin of John Clark , particularly the telling last 4 ends. The guys all enjoyed the encounter and made the best of it with friendly banter and the odd prank or two. For Bryant and Darby, who were never headed, it was a great way to win, what was for them, a “back to back” title. They will go on to represent Edithvale in the Sandbelt Region again this 12-13 season, and hopefully go just one game better as Winner’s not Runner’s up. !!! Well done guys and good luck out there.
The Semi in the Set’s Play Pairs was a 4 hour affair! Lachie Templeton/Lisa Williams (S) won the first set well at 9-5 up, but the table turned in the second set when Glenys Gionis/Robert Leitch (S) piled on numbers (3x2’s, a 4 and a 1) to win 11-4.
This second set was hard fought from beginning to end with no less than 3 dead ends but in doing so, took the game into “sudden death” over 3 ends.
Robbie Leitch excelled in these final ends and Glenys was also there as they picked up 2X3’s in the first 2 ends, going down 1 in the last after a lot of very good Jack chasing from both teams. Lachie picked up a bare jack in the last taking it to the ditch and making it 3 or 4 up (for a moment) but never enough to turn the tide for an extra end. Instead they picked up only one and it was all over for them this year. Well done Glenys Gionis and Rob Leitch who now go into a final against Pauline & Alan Cousens on Sunday 20th Jan 2013.
Ed note: Why do I keep coming back the word "Affair" ? is it something to do with the top photo? AND....who has the 6 pack in the last? (What is a six pack?)
