Saturday Pennant Rd 16. 09/02/13.

Edithvale Bowling Club had a mixed day on Saturday, with two sides winning and the sixth side having a tie.

Div 2 Sect 7

The firsts hosted synthetic-based Hampton RSL, needing a winning to cling to fourth position on the ladder. The boys did not disappoint, and we came away with 16 points and a 49 shot win.  Billy Morton’s team continued their fine form, scoring a 5, a 4 and six 3s (including four 3s in a row) on their way to a strong 34-16 win. Albert Chung’s team were up against a team of RSL club champions, and went down by 3 shots in a tight game. Peter Woodbridge’s crew came out firing and led 24-2 after 11 ends, including a run of 20 shots in 7 ends. They enjoyed two 5s, two 4s and four 3s in their big 38-9 win. Peter Bailey held shot a stunning 20 times in 21 ends. Ray Costolloe Jr’s four had a very close game, with the two teams only really being separated by Edithvale’s 4 shots on the 15th end. With only two rounds until the finals, the firsts have to win next week at Hampton to continue to hold onto fourth place.

DIV 2 SEC 7: Bentleigh 14-75 Hampton 2 4-64, Edithvale 16-104 Hampton RSL 2-55, South Oakleigh n/a Richmond Union 2 n/a, Mentone 2 18-100 Coatesville 2 0-52, Cheltenham 2 6-76 Armadale 12-84.

Div 3 Sect 7

The seconds travelled to Berwick, and lost by 7 shots. Barb Overson’s team won by 9 shots after they picked up a handy 5 on the 7th end, with Barb continuing her strong form. Norm Lewis’ four scraped home by a solitary shot after leading 21-8 after 14 ends. Don Chambers’ team started poorly, down 1-21 after 9 ends, but recovered to post a 4, a 3 and three 2s in the run home. Glen Baskett’s crew were up 11-5 after 7 ends, and finished up with a draw. This will make it difficult for the seconds to now make the finals.

DIV 3 SEC 7: Parkdale n/a Hampton Park n/a, Noble Park 2 4-62 Narre Warren 14-78, Berwick 4 13-80 Edithvale 2 5-73, Carrum 14-93 Cranbourne 4 4-66, Pakenham 2 14-73 Burden Park 3 4-72.

Div 4 Sect 7

The thirds shared C Green with the top side, but had to settle for an 8 shot loss to Black Rock. Walter Trupke’s four got off to a flying start to be up 15-3, before the game evened out. Peter Howell’s team also started well to be up 11-3, but in a remarkable turn-around they ended up down 20-31. Norm Overson’s team were down 0-11 but fought back well to lose by 6 shots. Neil Lewis’ crew led 12-7 after 10 ends, before the next five ends went -5 -4 +2 +4 +2. They ended up winning by 3 shots. The thirds need to finish strongly to make the finals.

DIV 4 SEC 7: Hampton 3 4-82 Beaumaris 2 14-84, Sandringham 14-83 Bentleigh 2 4-73, Moorabbin 14-79 Chelsea 4-74, Edithvale 3 4-83 Black Rock 14-91, Berwick 6 16-86 Mordialloc 2 2-73.

Div 6 Sect 6

This side played away and beat Berwick on their green. Joe Musco and team with Bob Baird 3rd Eric Viney 2nd and Brenda Janssen Lead top scored winning their rink 26-8 (doesn’t get much better than that!), they won all ends from the 5th to the 13th where they found themselves up 17-3. The opposition won the 14th by 1 and scored 2x2’s over the next 7 ends to our 9. Great effort! Frank Baguley, promoted for the day, with team members Bernie Turnbull 3rd Jan Collins 2nd and Shirley Simpson Lead, won by 10 (24-14) they were never headed after Berwick got 1 in the first. A great result Frank & team! Ray Costolloe’s team of David and Jason Costolloe and Greg Kelly in 3rd put in a magnificent comeback from 11 down on the 15th to pick up 8 shots to the oppositions 2 shots over the final 6 ends......now that deserves a medal! Well done team. Terry Cheshire and team were not so proficient going down by 11. They were 5 up on the 7th but did not score again until the 16th end when a three made the score 12-17, and the 17th with a two making it 14-17...but that was it for the day and they went down 14-25. The side picked up 14 points and 12 shots. On today's result and the results of those above us, our hopes of a final here are pretty well dashed.

DIV 6 SEC 6: Bye 0-0 Eastwood Golf 3 0-0, Berwick 7 n/a Edithvale 4 n/a, Hampton Park 3 2-83 Keysborough 3 16-108, Waverley Golf 3 0-70 Glen Waverley 5 18-95, Burden Park 4 2-62 Mulgrave CC 7 16-85.

Div 6 Sect 7

This side did not play because 12 bowlers (with legitimate excuses) had this week off. For Bernie Hambridge it was a gathering of family and friends to celebrate his wife’s 80th (hope it was a grand event) and for others it was weddings or sickness of partners or themselves). There is no chance of a final berth here.....it would be more than a David Bradbury could wish for.

DIV 6 SEC 7: Oakleigh 2 18-90 SOC 2 0-56, Cheltenham 5 2-87 Parkdale 2 16-98, Bentleigh 3 18-15 Edithvale 5 0-(-15), Mulgrave CC 8 16-90 Coatesville 4 2-60, Chelsea 2 14-92 Brighton Beach 4-70.

Div 10 Sect 1

This side may as well have won rather than drawn according to the Hoo Haa and dancing that went on (upsetting James O’Brien). It was 17 all for Kaye Cramond’s Team and 19 all for Jeanette Barrett’s team. The reason for their euphoria was the drawing of a game against a side of players, who on Tuesdays play in Ladies Premier League (Glen Waverley 7)....and we beat them on their turf! Both our teams were 1 up on the 13th but going into the last end Edithvale were 17-19 down and 15-17 down...wow both picked up a 2! Now ain’t that grand, 7 points, a much nicer result than no points and -4! Stand proud girls and Sally stop jiggling and leave James in peace. Well girls the hopes of our Club rest with you and the Topside....let's all get behind both to ensure them a finals berth.

DIV 10 SEC 1: Bentleigh 5 2-29.25 Waverley Golf 4 12-39, Glen Waverley 7 7-36 Edithvale 6 7-36, Berwick 8 14-52 Blackburn 7 0-28, Yarraville/Footscray 8 13-41 Essendon 6 1-31.75.
