What better time to launch this story!!!! A 60 yr "celebration of love", understanding, putting up with....whatever, and survival! Great effort, stamina and mutual respect.
On 21st Feb 2013 Robert (Bob) Lockhart and Joan Darvell will celebrate 60 years of married life which began with their vows, taken at the Presbyterian Church, North Road, Ormond, Victoria all those years ago.
They first locked eyes on each other at a Gymnasium Dance when Joan aged 15 (accompanying her parents) was still a student of Mac. Robertson Girls’ High School and Bob aged 19 was an insurance worker. Bob was not one to dance with just any girl, usually choosing instead to accompany and dance with his sister. On this night however he made a b-line for the young Joan and thus began a courtship of 4 years. They married in February 1953 and lived with Joan’s parents for a time before moving to premises above her Uncle Alex’s butcher shop in Elsternwick.
Bob had joined the Police force in 1950 and Joan took up a position with “Chartres”, distributors of Remington Typewriters in Market Lane, Melbourne.
Joan & Bob moved to their own home in Bon Beach in 1956, and then to a Unit in Carrum in 1993. Joan’s mum Jess Darvell was a well accomplished bowler at Carrum, and lived in a flat at the rear of the Bon Beach property for several decades.
Bob and Joan were both Presidents’ of the Patterson River Bowling Club, both were umpires and Bob took it one step further, to become a coach.
They moved to Edithvale Bowling Club around 1995. It was less than 3 years till Joan found herself in the top job again, and served us as President for 2 years at a time when Edithvale Ladies experienced (perhaps) their best pennant results...winning the A1 Metro Pennant flag for 98/99. Bob also took a turn in the Men’s Presidency, but was previously elected as a member of the 1995 “Inaugural Board of Management”.
Both Bob and Joan have served our club extremely well on the “Board” (Bob as a member but both in their President years) and in many other capacities. Joan in particular was on “Catering Committee” (a job no-one wants today) for 8 maybe 10 years, always done with a smile. Joan has been a selector, this time around for 5 years.
During their marriage they travelled to the UK twice, taking in the sites of Scotland & Europe.
Bob and Joan have a daughter Gayle, son in law Barry and son Neil, daughter in law Hazel and 2 grown up grand children, Nicole & Brad.
The “Still” happy couple will celebrate this Sunday with 30 family and friends, near home.
Well done to you both....what a combo!!
