Maroondah Magic Wins Volunteer Club of Year at CCAV Awards

President Damian Clarke accepted the CCAV Volunteer Club of the Year on behalf of Maroondah Magic at the CCAV Awards night held at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday 20 October 2010.

Our club won the prestigious award over three other outstanding finalists. The Award recognises the contribution volunteer clubs make to the community and is awarded based on membership growth, quality of service provide to members and commitment of volunteers.

Our club was originally known as the Maroondah High School Basketball Club and has been operational since the early 1970’s.

Our name changed to the Maroondah Basketball Club in 1980’s, with the original uniform being simple white bonds t-shirts, which were then dyed yellow with brown numbers sewn on.  The club was originally affiliated with Melbourne East Basketball Association and then moved to the Kilsyth and Mountain District Basketball Association in the early 1980’s.

Our uniform was upgraded in early 1980’s by a logo designed by a Maroondah High School student and remains green with yellow trim.

By 1983, the club had 60 girls and 160 boys playing the game of basketball which included 2 x U8’s, 5x U10’s, 4x U12’s, 4x U14’s, 2x U16’s and 2x U18’s.  The club also administered 60 open age players.

In 2005, the club had grown to 33 boy’s teams and 19 girl’s teams competing in the Kilsyth and Mountain District Basketball Association domestic competitions.

For the forthcoming Summer 2011 season, the club will have grown to remarkable 56 boys teams and 26 girls teams, (totalling 82), encompassing over 700+ junior basketball players plus another senior men’s and two women’s teams.  Add to this the relevant support infrastructure of voluntary coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, parental and family support and the volunteers in various committee roles of around 17 voluntary office bearers, fundraisers, registration and uniform officers who all passionately dedicate their time to community growth and development.

The Maroondah Magic Basketball Club are currently the second largest junior domestic club who compete in the Kilsyth and Mountain District Basketball Association competitions, which notably is the current largest basketball association in Australia with over 1,000 teams participating in its competitions each week.
