Southern Districts Football Club was originally affiliated with the Northern Territory Football Association (now TEAFA) in 1982, with sides in the U/13, U/15 and U/17 competition. The club adopted for the red, white and black of St Kilda and called themselves the Crocodiles.
The early beginnings of the club were originated by a group of parents wanting to give junior players in the rural area an opportunity to compete in the Darwin Junior Competition. Frank Carbone was the first president of the club.
In 1984 the 3 junior sides were admitted to the Northern Territory Football League. The following season the U/18's and Reserve grade sides were admitted. Then in 1987 Southern Districts fielded their first league side in the Northern Territory Football League. Brian Hood was the coach and Duncan Beggs the President.
During the 1988/89 season the U/16 side won the clubs first premiership. That group of players followed up the next season to win the first U/18 Districts premiership and the second for the club.
10 years after inception Southern Districts won its first league premiership under the coaching of Mark Motlop (1997/98). The clubs second shot of the big having lost to St Marys in a grand final appearance in 1995/96.
The U/14's won their first flag in 1999/00, leaving the reserve greade side the only level that Districts haven't won a premiership at. Hopefully that will change over the years and more prmiership flags will fly at Freds Pass Reserve.
The club has had 5 Nichols Medal winners for best and Fariest in the NTFL competion.
Brently Hughes 1989/90
Adrian Collard 1996/97
Kelvin Maher 1999/00

Bruce Jarmyn 2001/02
The club has also produced other great champions, such as Adrian McAdam, Gilbert McAdam, Nathan Buckley, Fabian Francis, Steven Koops and more recently young draftees Jared Brennan and Richard Tambling. Shannon Rusca also contributed to the list by being drafted to Brisbane on the rookie list and then the Bulldogs before having a stella season with West Adelaide in 2004.
The club has done especially well in the U/14's with winning the Gunderson Medal. In 1984/85 M. Beggs, 1988/89 J. Andrews, 1991/92 S. Koops, 1992/93 S. Rusca, 1994/95 N. Corpus, 1999/00 A. Motlop and 2003/04 Braedon Talbot.
Other local stars who became regular stalwarts around the club were Jason Cockatoo, renowned as one of the best half back flankers in the competition. Jason was amember of the Premiership side. Shane Shewring, who started in the U/14's in 1982 and eventually captained the club in 1999/00 was also a great defender for Southern Districts. Shane was the first Crocs player to reach the 200 game milestone and was also a part of the premiership team.
Likewise, looking at the present times and into the future of the S.D.F.C, prior funding has allowed a new homeground for the crocs to be built; Norbuilt Oval. This oval is still within the Freds Pass location, directly behind the old oval. Norbuilt oval is a great place to bring the kids and watch the footy, especially with the bar and canteen facilities at arms reach.
However, the S.D.F.C would not be where it is today without the commitnents made by the community members. The contributes made by the dedicated commity members is outstanding, and all done for the love for AFL. Hopefully their passion for the game is passed on to the younger generation, so this club can move along in full swing for years to come.
