It has been an exciting place to be down on Great Ryrie Street since November. The aim of the club was to try and recruit as many guys as we could to the club over summer. The fact we have at least 20 'senior age' players signed up externally has been fantastic. With this has come a great feel and enthusiasm from the players overall. The Reserves from last year will feel a lot more confident of having a successful year by having on average 43 guys attend training.
But what comes with talent has to be even better commitment and improvement. Our sport is simply not played on paper so it is vital that we as a unit train as hard as we can, as often as we can to ensure the club remains very strong, very deep into the list. Only pressure through performance from the Reserves makes the Seniors more determined to perform. Training enthusiasm and application, as well as a player's enthusiasm and ability to play to the team's and club's core requirements will help us achieve what the club desires: finals footy.
But first things first: this influx of players and depth at the club at this stage, has created a great internal competitive edge to the club that as we know from 3 years ago is required to be successful. The 3 practice matches along with training going forward will serve as a very important guide on form and who we take into Rd1 for the Reserves. As Davo suggests, positions in both grades will all be up for grabs. Let's capitalise on this good position.
I also wish to welcome and say good luck for the year ahead to the under 19s with Damo (and Shozz...there you go mate) and the newly formed and impressive looking under 18s with Rick. Enjoy the year guys.
