Mazenod Vs Sandown 04/08/2013
Mazenod white team travelled to Sandown for the final match of the year. Our Head coach Dave Regan made his way there as well to help out our usual coach this year Andrew Fry. Well the ground appeared to be in great condition considering the deluge from the night before. 13 players arrived ready for the game missing a few along the way. Mark Everitt showed his fighting spirit by playing the game after having a fall during the week with a few stitches in his head. Paul played like a demon taking marks and tackling around the ground. Josh Wallace was trying hard all day in the back line like he always does and was giving his usual 100%. Jake and James were sharing the ruck duties and ran all day, big Dave Gorin played in the forward line but didn’t get any opportunities. The only goal kicker for the day was James who never misses an a chance around goals. Marcel played out of the back line with Chris trying to stop the onslaught from Sandown who out played Mazenod all day.
The final scores for the day Sandown 16. 15. 111 defeated Mazenod 1.1.7
Best players for the day Mark, Marcell, Josh, Paul, James, and Jake.
Lets all look forward to a better season next year. Thank you to all who have helped the white team this year without your support we wouldn’t have been able to be on the field.
WELCOME
Shannon Joyce, son of Brian is now proud member of the Panthers, is our first father and son combination to pull on the boots together in the history of the Mazenod Panthers, Shannon played a great first game against Chady on Sunday.
Another first gamer Cameron Taylor led the White team onto the ground as captain
but came down with an ankle injury in the first quarter, we hope Cam is fit and healthy
by 2nd June against Kananook.
Round 4 Report –19/5/2013 Peter Collins.
The Pies had done over Geelong, the sun was shining, the air was still and the ground was in good nick apart from the muddy centre. Even before the first game, the canteen was doing a brisk trade in Panther ‘haute cuisine’ courtesy of the services of the eye catching Monica Duijkers and (Cas)Sandra Baya. The less than eye catching Canteen Quartermaster Ron Dovaston lurked in the background. He is to the Panthers what soy sauce is to your dim sim. Things just wouldn’t be the same without him! Ron’s eye catching better half, Joan, normally a fixture in the canteen, was at home cracking the whip over slave labour preparing her kitchen for the new dishwasher. We hope all went well for you Joan! What’s all this got to do with the football you may ask? Central Reserve matches are where our club hosts the opposition to play, and all spectators to watch, a competitive and often physical display of footy skills in a safe and welcoming environment. Violence isn’t part of the deal. For everyone, there is a chance to catch up with mates, enjoy a spectacle, meet new people and enjoy food and good company. The canteen opens before the first game and closes well after the last game and is a big piece of our ‘welcome mat’. Enjoy it and say thanks when you next visit.
Thanks also to Russell and Matt, the field umpires, Sophie (watergal), Michael Driver, Claudio Bisognin and Mark Crilly (goal umpires), Justin Dovaston and Chris Johnson (scoreboard operators) and the versatile Paul Everitt for orange-guy one match and water-guy the next! Paul does this with a broken but healing collarbone. Good luck with your X-ray this week, Paul. Thanks to all our anonymous ‘experts’ who do the best and fairest votes. If you haven’t been one yet, your time will come!
Match Results – You win some, you lose some. We beat Footscray North first up then went down to a well-equipped Chadstone in the second and third matches. Our ‘mojo’ seemed to come and go in the Chaddy matches, particularly in the last quarters. Phenomenal contributions from those Panthers who played in 2 games to keep the team fires alight. No thanks to Wade Zimbolini, who abused and attempted to assault the field umpire in the second match. Totally unacceptable! Wade is unavailable for FIDA football for 2013.
Panther Whites 7-3-45 defeated Footscray Nth 5-4-34
A close game throughout. We were up one point in 1st quarter. In the second, Marcel Vermulst put thru a beauty early on and Mark Everitt set up the second goal, put thru by Mark Vanderven. In the third quarter, three of our goal shots went out of bounds; David Gorin was so near yet so far with his behind (score, that is) and Mr Vanderven took a screamer. Damien Cousins gave a master class in the lone pursuit and tackling of a Footscray ‘escapee’. We were up by only 5 points going into the last quarter. Footscray went really hard at us, banging on 2 goals but our backmen held their nerve giving our pacemen Pettit, Hosken, Vanderven and Conroy time to send the ball forwards. Messrs Dux and Hassan did the rest to seal Footscray’s fate.
Goals: R Pettit (2), S Dux (2), M.Vermulst, M Vanderven, D Hassan.
Best: R Conroy, R Pettit, M Vanderven, J Hosken, S Dux, M Everitt, D Gorin, P Zapantis, F Bakens, J Morrison, C Johnson, D West, J Wallace.
Panther Blues 6-6-42 were defeated by Chadstone Seniors 11-6-72
The blitzkrieg tactics of Pettit, Pollock, Soles and Vanderven overwhelmed Chadstone early on while Mr Dux and others kept Chaddy’s forwards out of business. Sam Samason displayed pace and grit and by the end of the 1st quarter, we were 3 goals up. Meanwhile off the field, Max Collins had downed 3 dim sims, one of which belonged to his father. Thanks a lot, Max! Chaddy woke up in the 2nd quarter and our defenders like Messrs Dovaston and Samason did their best but Chaddy’s attacks were unrelenting. Chaddy’s defence had also smartened up dramatically and we could only add 2 behinds to Chaddy’s 3 goals. Nice pass by Cameron Taylor to Mark V and great to see the mind reading plays between Messrs Pettit and Vanderven. Are they twins who were separated at birth? At half time, Chadstone were a point up on us. We found our Mojo in the third, kicking 3-3 to double our score but Chaddy were on Viagra, booting 4 straight goals. We were 10 points down going into the last and Chaddy just kept coming. Peter Bisognin, Steve Spence who had taken trhe mark of the year, and Jake Phillips gave Chaddy a hard time where they could, Mr Pollock banged on a goal but Chaddy were just too good. They had started with fresh legs, which helps.
Goals: R Pettit (2), S Pollock (2), J Soles, S Samason.
Best: S Samason, J Soles, S Pollock, S Spence, S Dux, C Taylor, M Vanderven,
A Yaksender, J Gannon, R Pettit, J Dovaston, J Phillips.
Panther Blacks 4-3-27 were defeated by Chadstone Reserves 10-6-66
Surely a Panthers’ first? Father and son Brian and Shannon Joyce playing in the same team. Shannon plays as number 33, while dad Brian will sport number 62 when his jumper arrives from our clothier. Unfortunately, Brian played with an unnumbered jumper in this match, which doesn’t help him being noticed in the best and fairest votes. Somebody did though. This was an odd Chadstone team. One player played barefoot, another 3 or 4 players were so small and young, they looked unsuitable for this match. They turned out to be a mixture of midget submarines/greyhounds and were influential in our ruin.
Chadstone overran us in the first quarter kicking 5 goals to our one goal, put thru by Vickram Jholl making a welcome comeback to the goal kickers’ list. By now, it was clear that those small Chadstone ‘innocents’ were dynamite. We pulled the finger out in the second and our defenders rose to the challenge, keeping Chaddy to two behinds to our 3 goals. At half time we were in with a chance, only 11 points down thanks to the steady boots of Sam Taylor and the everywhere man James Hosken. In the third, Jack Morrison nearly had a goal to his name but it proved to be a behind and our only score that quarter. Many times Anthony DiStasio, Neil McKinnon, Jack Morrison, Matty Anderson, Toby Crooke, David West and Shannon Joyce foiled Chaddy’s attacks. Many times Chaddy’s little guys got under and out of packs with the ball to cause us headache. That barefoot Chaddy man was giving us a hard time around our half forward line, too. At three quarter time, we were 23 points down. Life was getting serious! In the last, Nick Crilly and Peter Bisognin went full bore, Brian Joyce had taken a knock and was limping but plugging on regardless. We managed a couple of behinds but Chadstone had gained their second wind and just kept attacking. It was a credit to our tired backmen that Chaddy could only add three goals despite their continuous attacks. We got done but we got done with dignity!
Goals: J Hosken (2), V Jholl, S Taylor.
Best: J Hosken, J Morrison, T Crook N McKinnon, M Anderson, A DiStasio, S Taylor, S Joyce, B Joyce, D West, V Jholl, N Crilly.
