With a motion on the AFL Capricornia Juniors agenda for a meeting on 16th January it may be that there is a change in age groups from that of the current ‘odd’ numbered age groups to that of an ‘even’ numbered age groups. If a required majority accept the proposal will have under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18’s instead of the present under 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 & 17. Friday night footy would be the 8s to 12’s with the remainder on Saturdays.
The interest shown at a recent meeting indicate that those same four clubs are in favour of change and it will hinge on those in attendance at the meeting and whether a shift of position by the executive members or one of the other two clubs is seen.
From the Roos perspective we are supportive of this change to try to retain players in an under 18 competition where they may be reluctant to move into the senior ranks. It will also give players in the representative age teams to be selected in the positions they play on a weekly bases rather than being the lower age in the age group. Playing as a 14 year old in in under 15 but representing at under 14 age group being an example.
Should the change be supported any interested club coaches will be able to determine the age they choose to coach through discussion with the Junior V-President. See our other article on club coaches being sought.
If you have any strong feelings in favour or against please also contact the V- Pres.
