Bathurst Trip 2008
Bathurst Gala Day Sunday 27th July 2008
After our successful trip to Bathurst last year, we set off once again for a great day of football. This year we were also joined by players from the Hawkesbury Club and a squad from the under 18s of East Coast Eagles, which also included a few of our under 16s who regularly play for them. Following these games was an exhilarating show of skills by the Masters players.
We were greeted at Bathurst by brilliant sunshine ready for a great day of footy. Before long though, the sun disappeared intermittently which took away all heat and then later went completely and down came the rain – it was snowing at Orange so if you weren’t there, you can only imagine the wind chill factor!!! Craig re-positioned the bus for better viewing and many took refuge at different stages of the day.
The teams were all put together with a bit of mixing of ages and players, and the day started with the 12s on one field and the 16s on the other. Whilst trying to watch both teams at once was a little difficult, their performances against representative teams were fantastic and they well and truly held their own, especially considering our teams had never played together before. Luckily the rain held off for these matches. Not so lucky for the next games of 14s and 18s. They too were inspirational against their opposition in arctic conditions. At one point, some of the under 14s during a break even put their t-shirts and jackets underneath their jerseys – with my silly son even borrowing my knitted gloves much to the amusement of his team-mates. Thanks to Eamon Spillane and Corey Davis for suppling the players with hot water to pour over themselves during the game. The under 18s were rewarded with a well earned win for their match. Congratulations to all players for their fantastic show of teamwork and sportsmanship. Thanks to Dom Spillane for coaching the 12’s, Russell Armstrong the 14’s & Colin Amos the 16’s.
To wrap up the day, on came the masters. Someone upstairs must have felt sorry for them as the weather did a complete turn-around and the sun came out again. Our team were excitedly cheered from the sidelines and often “coached” by the kids. Well known to the Bombers and Hawkesbury were Russell (14s), Dominic (11s), Neville, John, Rodney on debut (kicking a brilliant goal) and Matt (Neville’s son), Colin, Darren (Junior President), and Alan (18s Co-ordinator) and Peter (18s Premier Cup Coach) from East Coast. As you can imagine, it became rather vocal on the sidelines whenever our players did anything of brilliance or disaster. They also ended up with a conclusive win.
Once we managed to drag the “old fellas” from the showers we were back on the road with a quick lap around Mt Panorama in the bus.
All in all, another great day at the footy I am sure everyone looks forward to doing it again.
Thanks once again to the Bushrangers for hosting us, David, Michelle and Alan and the other organisers of the day, and to Craig who had the bus driving duty again this year.
See you at the footy,
Annette Tumminello – Vice President 2008
