Notes:
To play in the Development squad players must participate in the trials, be selected and pay subscription and development fees. There is a limit to the number of players that can be selected for the Development squad. Additional members may be invited as reserves to train with squad in addition to playing with participation team at the discretion of the Director of Coaching.
x = team numbers will depend on the number of player registrations – the Club will try and accommodate all players at this level.
** Midgets Under 8 format changes to 7 aside, ½ field for 4-6 weeks at end of season to prepare for step up to Juniors.
? Under 14 age group will be available if the number of registrations is sufficient to make up teams, so please don't pay your subscription for this age group until the Club confirms that the minimum number has been reached.
Based on the review of changes made last season the following programmes will be available for 2009. This builds on the concept of development football, whilst opening up the opportunity for all participation players to improve their skills and opportunities. NSU is committed to improving the quality of top level football in the Club and this is hinged on the provision of professional coaching for those players who want to play at a competitive level.
Teams generally form 5 a-side school based groups playing on 1/4 field sized pitches with small goals. North Shore United continues to support the Federation and is committed to Small Sided Games for both the development and enjoyment of the players. Additionally we will continue with youth players managing pre-game warm-ups and refereeing. This benefits both youth and midget development.
In addition to this, skills based training will be offered weekly with the Midget Director of Coaching and his assistants. This will be conducted at Allen Hill on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights between 16:00 and 17:30. For midget players this is included in the standard subscription fee.
Development squads will be available in both the Under 7 and Under 8 age-groups. These squads will play in inter-club age group tournaments. Should you wish to be in a Development Squad in this please select "Trials Required (Development)" under the Football Level on your registration. The charge for development squads for will be at a reduced rate of $85.

Players will determine on registration whether they want to enter the TRIALs and be considered for the Development Squad in each grade. If players do not wish to enter the TRIALs they will automatically be placed within a participation team.
Players may select to play with school or friends and where possible the Club will group them together when forming the teams. Please specify any preferences.
The development squad comprises 1-2 teams in each grade made up of players selected by professional coaching staff at the trials. All players wishing to play Development Football will be required to attend trials and whilst all effort to accommodate all players wishing to play at this level will be made, there is a limit to the number of teams the Club will support, and a limit to the number of players in each team.
In order to be considered for a development squad the player must understand the following:
In providing the development option the Club is seeking to accommodate those players who are committed to attend training at least twice a week and want a higher level of competition. Additionally, a few top players within this group may be nominated to trial for the Regional Centre of Excellence Squads.
If during the season, players are found to be incorrectly grouped, the Club will seek to address this where ever possible. Should a player choose, or be required to be moved from Development to Participation the pro-rata amount for the remaining season will be refunded.
Players may state a preference to play in school teams or with friends and where possible the Club will accomodate them. Please specify any preferences.

Just as important are those players that wish to enjoy their football but have other commitments and passions alongside. Participation football will put less emphasis on training and will allow for a fun environment to enjoy some inter-club competition most likely with their mates. Participation teams will be constructed based on player preferences and will likely be school based where numbers permit. Some skills based training opportunities will be provided by the Club to support both parent coaches and players.
Additional skills training will be made available as an option at each grade level for participation footballers who wish to improve their skills. Any participation player (both girls and boys) are welcome – they just need to register and pay the coaching fee of $85. This training will be led by a qualified coach with support of additional coaches in groups of 15-20. The focus of the training will be on the development of skills and players will be assigned to groups on arrival. The coaching fee is based on the assumption that there will be 18 weeks of training ($4.70 per week or hour), subject to ground closures due to weather.

PARTICIPATION TEAMS WILL BE ANNOUNCED BY MARCH 15TH AND SKILLS SCHOOL WILL COMMENCE ON March 16th. There will be no skills school during holiday periods.
NSU is committed to continuing the improvements they have made in the last two seasons with Girls Football – last year a number of players were successful in gaining positions in the North Harbour representative squads.
This year we are offering U8 midget girls the opportunity to play in a girls team should they so desire. This team (subject to sufficient numbers) will comprise U8 and U9 age group girls and will play in an U9 7-a-side tournament. Any U8 girls wishing to be considered for either of these teams should make a note on their registration form and the Girls Grade Convenor will ensure they are invited to the girls muster day.
In addition to this, US1/AFF are considering an U15 Girls Metro competition. The objective of this is to provide a competition for girls that wish to be more competitive and serious about their football. This would combine the best girls in the U12 to U15 age-group bracket. Any girls wishing to be considered for either of these teams should ensure that they select the Trial required (development) option under Football preferences.
Should girls play mixed or girls football?
This is entirely up to the individual and depends on the girls physical, mental and emotional make-up and commitment to the ir football. Many see significant development advantages to the generally more competitive and physical mixed football but this is depends on the girls ability to compete in the higher graded teams and stand up for themselves to ensure an equal standing within that team. Conversely, Girls Football provides the opportunity for the player to stand out within a team and also engage socially in with other Girls. In a recent conversation with John Herdman (NZ Football Ferns Coach) – “the quality of the training is the most critical element to girls development” – so for any girls passionate about their future in the game NSU will endeavour to meet their training requirements regardless of whether they play in a mixed or girls team. Contact the Girls Grade Convenor if you have any queries.
Any players interested in joining North Shore Goalkeeping Clinics to receive specialist training please ensure that they select "goalkeeper" in the positions field. This will NOT limit you to this position but it will provide us with your registration of interest. Our Goalkeeper Coach will then contact you with training times directly.
We continue to offer the Optional Family Supporters Membership for a Fee of $25.00. This year Parents can register themselves as members by selecting the Misc? Interest type. This will allow parents of Juniors one voting right at the Club AGM, along with member discount rights for clubhouse bookings.
Where a parent is involved in coaching or managing, the family fee will be waived but we would greatly appreciate if you would register yourself online anyway.
Whilst the Club has endeavoured to keep fee increases to a minimum, as everyone is aware times are tough and we have therefore been forced to make a small increase in the standard junior subscription.
Every effort is made by the club to obtain grants, sponsorship and to conduct fundraising activities along with significant volunteer time to minimise the cost to the players and parents. The subscription fees have been increased by 4.3% from last year to accommodate both inflation and additional affiliation charges to New Zealand Football and United Soccer 1. In keeping the increase this low the Club is absorbing a large part of the actual increase in cost.
Please also be aware that development coaching is often charged by other clubs during the season and so is not always visible at registration.
All sports require the support of the grass roots to fund their programmes and when described in weekly terms the cost per player is not unreasonable and is comparable with other clubs and activities.
