Reports From The Preliminary Finals
With 3 teams still with a chance to make the Grand Final Quake’s supporters turned out in good numbers at Penrith to cheer their mates on. Brief reports of the 3 games follow.
14 Boys: Proudly Sponsored by Capital Steel Buildings Southwest: Quake 0 def. by Magic 5
The score line is not a true indicator of how well the boys played. Without Anthony the task was always going to be tough but the lads started the better of the 2 teams and had several very good chances in the first 15 minutes but were denied by some excellent ‘keeping. The first goal came from a long throw after Quake counter attacked and with too many numbers in the front court Magic found space and scored a scrappy goal from a bad rebound. Quake then had to chase the game and with all the luck going against them they conceded a few more ugly goals from deflections. In the end the boys had to take chances which saw the score line blow out. Magic were the better side on the day but our boys played as hard as they could but the Grand Final was just one step too far. Well done on a great year lads.
Women: Proudly Sponsored by Bella Arts Graphic Design: Quake 5 (Claire Walsh 2, Donnelly 2, Steph Haim) def. Warriors 1
Firstly, apologies to Steph – she got 2 goals last week and I didn’t give her credit. What can you say about this team? They are hungry, fired up and on a mission. For some reason nobody had picked them to win their semi or final and we hope nobody picks them for the Grand Final because it just makes them want it more. With 2 goals in the opening minutes the girls set the tone for the match and just kept piling on the pressure. When every player in the squad plays as well as they can you know the result will be in your favour and that’s what has happened in the past 2 games. The defending champions were a good team last year – this year you can argue that they are even better now they know they can blow teams off the court and win the big games. The girls are our only team in a Grand Final this year – make sure you get out to watch them defend their title next week.
Men: Proudly Sponsored by United Tools Liverpool: Quake46 (Mark Symington 3, Dean Lockhart) def. by Magic 5 in extra time
Another quality thriller from the boys. Everybody in the club is proud of how they played the last 2 weeks. They worked as hard as they could and came within a whisker of upsetting Magic when nobody gave them a chance. Mark Symington blitzed them again and underscored a brilliant year by scoring his 7th goal in 2 sudden death finals. Andy Haim stepped up from the Youth to play the full game in goals and acquitted himself well. For the 2nd year in a row the boys were dead and buried halfway through the season and came roaring back into the competition only to miss the Grand Final by a goal. This is a testament to their ability and their resilience and we can only admire them for their fighting qualities. Well done lads.
As always……GO QUAKE!
