Football Club History

The Irymple Football Club was formed in 1903 and competed against teams from

The first premiership that the Irymple Football Club won was in 19.

The early uniforms worn by the first ambassadors of the football club was a blue and yellow vertical stripped woolen jumper laced up down the front with leather boots that covered the ankles.

With the formation of the Sunraysia Football League in 1946 lead to formalized football seasons and record keeping for all teams within the league. During this time the Irymple Oval as it was known at the time was located on Koorlong Ave currently where M.A.W. is now located, it wasnâ€TMt until 1958 that the club moved to its current location on Karadoc Ave with some help form the Shire of Mildura and the Housing Commission releasing some land for the new reserve to be built. When the facility was opened by the Shire President Nat Barclay he stated that the new reserve would be good for the community and bring a sense of togetherness for everyone.

At the same time as moving to a new facility and trying to establish a sense of identity was the introduction of the Robinvale Football Club which place large financial pressures on the club, so to raise extra revenue the club decided to introduce functions over the summer months to ensure that there was some money coming in so that they club had some to enable the season to kick off on time. Such functions included a dance, darts, table tennis and hookey.

The Irymple Football Club has not been completely free from controversy over the existence of the club. In 1967 it was widely reported in the local newspaper that the club was $2,000 in debt after the season, the total operating budget for the whole season was just $12,000, while the revenue for the season was only $10,000 this had been attributed to S.F.L., gate takings and social functions all contributing less to the total revenue for the club.

The president of the club at the time Mr. Holcroft called a meeting in which they discussed changing the jumper from the current one which was a blue jumper with a yellow sash diagonally across it to a blue jumper with the yellow V from the neck which was won up until 2000. At this meeting it was also gauged as to whether the club wanted to stay in the competition or fold.

At the end of the 1969 season a report in the newspaper stated the club was in debt to the sum of $1700 and an urgent meeting was called for anyone that was interested in attending. At this meeting the president Mr. Holcroft reported the accurate figures that after the 1967 season the club was in debt by $3000 but by the end of the 1969 season the club was debt free, it is also lead to believe that with the introduction of the new technical school that it would greatly help the survival of the football club well into the future.

Finacial pressures havenâ€TMt been the only rr

Since the early days money has been a large problem for all clubs trying to retain players for their own respective clubs. In 1970 the committee of the Irymple
Football Club noted that the clubs from the Millewa were able to offer greater amounts of money to players and some where quite happy to take it.

With the introduction of netball into the Football League calendar in 1990 it has seen the Football Club go from strength to strength. At the Annual General Meeting in 2007 it was put to a vote of the committee and voting members of the Irymple Football Club to officially recognize the contribution that the netballers offer to the club and become the Irymple Football and Netball Club which was overwhelming supported.
