HISTORY OF THE WESTERN TAIPANS AFC Inc
The Western Taipans Australian Football Club were formed in October 1995 as a result of the rapid development of the Australian Football League and the lack of a player pathway for Queensland's outstanding Australian football athletes.
The Western Taipans AFC is a part of a six team Under 18 competition which services South East Queensland. Underpinning the Under 18 concept, is an Under 16 and Under 14 development squad structure in place for younger players. This involves a ten week training and development program culminating in the Under 16 and Under 14 State Carnival.
The Western Taipans, as a concept, has been a resounding success. Some of the clubs achievements are as follows:
Produced three All Australian players as selected at the annual National Under 18 championships
First elite club to produce an AFL player Brett Backwell (Carlton)
Numerous players selected in Queensland U18 and U16 teams
Numerous players promoted into Senior State League ranks
2004 U16 Premiers, 2002 U14 Premiers, 1998 U18 Premiers
