Introduction
Club President
Gavin De La Cruz
Welcome
On behalf of the Western Magic basketball club and the management committee we would like to welcome all new and returning players and their families for another season of Fun, Family, and Fitness at the Inala PCYC Centre.
Western Magic was established in January 2003 by a community group of parents in association with Brian Kerle, Olympian basketballer and former Brisbane Bullets coach. Our Club has continued to grow, and our junior players have met with many successes, thanks mostly to the involvement and commitment of parents supporting these young athletes. We hope that your continued support will be as rewarding for you as it has been for us.
Participation
The charter of the organisation is two fold: to provide young people aged from five to twenty the opportunity to learn the fundamental skills of basketball, and to assist those that display high skills the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
Basketball is a sport designed for children aged five years and up. They are encouraged to participate in all activities offered by the club and these activities are designed to develop eye hand coordination within a basketball context ie. Bouncing, jumping, shooting, passing etc.
This emphasis on full participation provides every opportunity for young athletes to develop balance, stamina, strength, coordination, and self control. The basketball program is not about who won or lost, it is about encouraging each and every child to improve their skills as an individual, and also to develop an understanding of what it is to be a contributing member of a team.
It is about having Fun with new, and old, friends. Players are grouped in ages and many relationships are developed with others away from their regular circle of school friends. It is also about the Family playing together and growing strong together. The Coaches, Managers, committee members are all mums and dads just like you and I. Many have no previous experience, but without your effort nothing happens. You might consider gaining qualifications as an accredited coach, umpire, and score bench official. Every little bit helps our children in their development.
Finally Basketball is about developing Fitness in a safe and healthy environment. Basketball involves training sessions, warm up sessions, coaching, games and much encouragement and guidance from committed and caring parents.
We look forward to assisting you where I can to ensure that all Magic basketballers and their families enjoy each season.
