On Thursday one hundred and sixty bowlers from clubs in Northern Victoria and Southern New South Wales played three games of nine ends of fours in hot weather at Benalla. Teams received ten points for a win and one point for each end won. The event was sponsored by ALDI, SAFEWAY, BERTALLI BAKERY, DAYNTREE COMPUTERS, ROSE CITY AUTO, BOTTLE’O LIQUOR, MITRE 10 HARDWARE, COMMERCIAL HOTEL, JENNY MILNER & MARSHA WATSON PHARMACY, BSW LIQUOR and MILLERS STORE. The winning team for the day, with 46 points, was the Beechworth team of B.Fitzpatrick(sk), R.Howard, P.Keogh and K.Waring. In their first game they played the Wangaratta 2 team of A.Brimblecombe(sk), J.Dillon, J.McBain and C.Bromilow. This was an even game with the score being 1-1 after two ends, 3-3 after six ends and 6-6 after eight ends. However, the Beechworth team won the last end to win the game 7-6 and score 15 points. In their second game the Beechworth team played the Swanpool 2 team of A.Hawes(sk), G.Landawee, C.Ward and B.Mathieson. The Beechworth team started this game strongly and led 7-1 after five ends. The Swanpool team then fought back and reduced the lead but the Beechwoth team won the game 9-6 and scored 16 points. In their third game the Beechworth team played the Benalla 5 team of G.Lessing(sk), A.Cromie, J.Lemin and J.Dennis. This was initially an even game with the score being 2-2 after four ends. However, the Beechworth team had multiple scores on three of the five remaining ends to win the game 12-4 and score 15 points. The runner up team for the day was the Rutherglen team of R.Wilson(sk), J.Pearce, L.Humphry and P. Nesbitt
