Lakes Entrance Football Netball Club has set off on the path of success again after a remarkable 2012 season that produced four premierships.
The Seagulls have had four pre-Christmas beach training sessions under the guidance of Dave Richardson, building a fitness base ahead of the season proper.
Over the four nights, more than 20 different senior faces attended the sessions to gain the fitness benefits before the festive season.
Lakes will now take a break before resuming on January 21, three nights a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – at Main Beach for three weeks before returning to the Lakeside Oval to attack the start of the season head on.
The initial training sessions have entailed beach sprints and general running, sand dune climbs, water running and wading, crawling, beach flags and a small amount of ball work in the soft sand.
Lakes hasn’t made too many changes to its coaching staff or committee for the upcoming season. Rod Bills will again take charge of the senior footballers, with Anthony Woodland and Jarrod Matthews his non-playing and playing assistant coaches respectively.
Woodland brings a wealth experience to the Seagulls. Last year he coached the under 16s and now that his son Nick has shown he is star of the future, Anthony has stepped up to take on more responsibility for the upcoming season.
Anthony is a legend of the Heyfield Football Club, playing in multiple senior premierships with the Kangaroos, while also taking on leadership roles.
He has already earned the respect of the playing group and respects each and every one of the Seagulls willing to have crack.
Matthews’ appointment comes on the back of two years with Bairnsdale in the Gippsland League, where he has became a more versatile and experienced senior footballer.
He bring a youthful exuberance to the Lakeside Oval and he will feed plenty of interesting ideas to Bills and Woodland as the year goes on and he feels more comfortable in the leadership role.
A reserves coach is yet to be appointed after the departure of premiership coach Barry Kenny, however under 18 premiership coach Nathan Pegler will again look after the rising stars of the football club.
Netball coaches are yet to be finalised. They will be appointed early in the New Year.
