Round 14 Summaries 18-07-09
What a Night
A fantastic night was had by the 120 strong crowd that turned up for the clubs Milestone Night staged last week. It was one of the clubs best ever functions with revellers partying hard into the wee hours. The night went off without a hitch with a very appreciative crowd enjoying the night with awards given for Services and Milestones accompanied by the sit down dinner and live band. The club would like to thank everybody who came along which turned out to be a who’s, who’s of Corio present and past. It was a fitting night to celebrate the careers of players with milestones and the efforts of volunteers who received awards. Milestones awarded on the night were Matthew Cullen 300, Darren Bennett 250, Dale Greaves 250, Barry Otoole 200, Robbie Walton 150, Amon Charles 150, Caine Hayes 150, Ricky Otoole 150, Danny Ruck 150, Belle Olsen 100, Andrew Williams 100, Jed Potter 100, Michael Baumann 100 (Some of the Milestones will be reached later in the year).

The U-18’s have slipped to a perilous position on the ladder after another defeat at the hands of Werribee. The side will have play good football for the rest of season to make sure they have enough wins to play finals this year. Strange scenes were seen last week in the game after one of our players and one of their players were Red Carded in the first and second quarters. The umpire stopped play twice for a head count with the first head count given the all clear. The umpire again called a head count in the last quarter and counted 18 Corio players and tried to send one of our players from the field. Corio officials were telling the player to stay on the field as the umpire was trying to send him off. The Corio officials knew of the rule change earlier in the year where a red carded player can be replaced after 20 minutes of play but unfortunately the umpire didn’t know of the change. The umpire eventually gave up and continued on with play and hopefully he looked up the rule book when he got home!

The 2’s played a fantastic game of football and was a fitting result for Mullets monumental milestone of 300 games. The game started with Corio kicking with a 6 or 7 goal breeze in the first quarter. Feldy marked strongly from behind in the goal square in the opening minutes and the scene was set for the rest of the game with a dominant performance against the highly fancied Werribee side. The first quarter was all Corio but the second quarter was their best for the year keeping Werribee goalless. The rest of the game was a foregone conclusion as they put a huge dent in the oppositions ego and played the same football they played in last years finals. Mullett in his 300th as usual didn’t disappoint booting 3 goals and picking up stats all over the ground. Benny was a rock in defence making sure many attacks forward by Werribee were thwarted just as quick. Jason Dowie was great in particular the 2nd quarter using good foot skills to team mates and keeping possession when Werribee had the aid of the strong breeze. JB is having a great year and last week was no exception, getting to the bottom of the packs and feeding handballs out to his team mates. Smitty kept a dangerous Werribee forward very quiet in a standout game for his side. Watty was another player great in the second quarter when his side needed players to stand up. Scratcher is another player having a purple patch and once again in amongst everything for most of the match. Feldy was all over the ground and was equally as damaging at both ends and ending up slotting 3 majors as well. All in all it was great result which ended with Mullet and Amon who was playing his 150th game, both chaired from the ground.
