Don’t forget the Milestone dinner this week
Everyone by now should have put their name down and booked a seat for the milestone dinner this week. The table lists are on the canteen door so make sure you double check to make sure your name is on the list. The night is a semi-formal event so make sure you dress up for what will be a great night for the club and 3 of its favourite sons. (Matthew Cullen 300 games, Darren Bennett 250, & Dale Greaves250)
Milestone of Milestones
This week the club sees its first player ever to run out for their 300th game in Corio colors. Matthew Cullen in his 21st season in the red and white will this Saturday take the field and do what no-one has done before and no-one will ever do again. Being the first to reach such a milestone is truly monumental and there is no more fitting person than Mullet to reach the magical mark and go down in history as the first Corio player to do so. Mullet began with Corio in the Little League playing for the Magpies coached by legendary Little League coach and his father Bobby Cullen. Who would of guessed as a 5 year old Mullet would still be playing football for Corio over 30 years later. Coming right through Corio’s junior age groups during the 80’s and topping off his junior career being named Captain of the U-18’s during season 1989, Mullet also notching up his first Senior\Reserve game in that season. During his 20 year Senior career he has achieved plenty including being a League Representative in 1997 and winning Senior (1997) and Reserve (2005) Best and Fairests, and also a Senior R-up B&F in 2007. Mullet has played in 3 Senior grand finals (2002, 2004, 2005), a reserve Championship in 2004 which he was named Best on Ground, and another reserve premiership in 2008 of which he was a Premiership Captain. Mull has also been Captain of the Seniors in 1998, 2000, and 2001 making him the only player to Captain all the top 3 Corio teams. Mull has stuck with the club through the good times and the bad times and rejected several financial offers to play elsewhere throughout the years. As a player Mull is known as a highly skilled player with deadly foot skills from which his trusted left foot has provided countless wormburner passes to his team mates over the years. His ability to read the play has overcome his stout physique to be a player who invariably picks up a stack of possessions and he also has an uncanny ability when being tackled, to get his kick in regardless the position of his body. Mull was awarded a life membership for games and outstanding club service last year which was a great reward for being an outstanding clubman. This is truly a fantastic milestone for a fantastic player and person and the Corio Football and Netball Club Committee, players, and supporters would like to firstly, thank Matthew for his unprecedented loyalty and wish him all the very best for this legendary historical milestone.
Amon Charles - 150 games
Also this week Amon runs out for 150th game for Corio. Amon played his first senior game in 1995 after coming up from the U-18’s the previous season. Amon has battled shoulder injuries over the years but manages to continue his desire to keep playing football. Amon was Captain of the U-18’s in 1994 and has played in 2 Senior grand finals and was a member of the Reserves premiership last season. Amon throughout his carreer has been a pacey highly skilled player with the ability to swoop on the ball and scoop it up without breaking speed whether in the dry or the wet. The club would like to congratulate Amon on this milestone and wish him all the very best for the game.
Volunteers
A big thank-you to Greg “Magic” Ince who was a big part of the clubs resurrection 4 years ago when he was Vice President and has taken on the role as joint President over the past 3 seasons. Greg is one of the first to arrive on game days and one of the last to leave and is always happy to volunteer his time to assist junior football, work the bar, attend meetings or do wherever is needed at senior level. Greg has worked tirelessly over the past 4 years putting in countless volunteer hours and continues to be an asset to the Corio Football and Netball club. The club would like to thank Greg for his continued volunteer work.

Seniors Vs Nth Geelong at home Corio 13-15-93 to 9-14-68
Goals: Leigh Clifford 4, Bill Nicholls 3, Shane Manning 2, Barry Otoole 2, Andrew Spengler, Mark Stewart
Best: Mark Stewart, Jed Potter, Barry Otoole, Ricky Otoole, Caine Hayes, Andrew Spengler
1 down 5 to go as the seniors got home by 25 points last week against North. Every week is do or die and this week is a danger game against Werribee who is fighting for a finals berth as well. The pleasing sign from last weeks game was the form shown by onballers Jed, Rick and Baz who will all need to be in the same form if Corio is get over the line this week. Stewy is another key after he dominated the game last week getting almost back to his brilliant best. Hank and Spenga last week gave the side plenty of run and both will play important roles this week as the try to emulate last weeks form. With the season on the line the side will need no incentive to play well this week as they try and keep their season alive in what will be double points against Werribee Centrals.
Reserves V Nth Geelong at home Corio 11-13-79 to 8-8-56
Goals: Troy Feldman 6, Michael Baumann, Amon Charles, Matthew Cullen, Shaun Gundry, Jacob Neal
Best: Troy Feldman, Jacob Neal, Michael Baumann, Watson Taylor, Ben Drayton, Leigh Cervanka
The reserves had a scare last week after a slow start against Nth Geelong but came home strong booting 7 goals in the 3rd quarter. The big test comes this week when the reserves get a chance to avenge their only loss for the season against Werribee Centrals earlier in the year. The reserves have no shortage of players in form but the only question is whether the side will click and play their best football which at times have struggled to perform this year. If Mullet plays reserves this week the side will definitely want to give him a game to remember as he reaches the monumental 300 game milestone. Last week Feldy once again found the goals bagging 6 majors and Scratcher continued his great form playing some great footy. Bowy and Ben Drayton are 2 very important players for the 2’s as both can put a lot of pressure on the opposition as they both did once again last week. Watson wont lay down and give away his spot in the team playing a standout game last week against quality opposition. The mad Russian Leroy is another player who will be needed by the reserves to be at the peak of his game this week and if last weeks performance is anything to go by then he probably will be. This is the biggest game for the reserves this year and will provide a lot of confidence for the winner come finals.
U\18 Vs Nth Geelong at home Corio 2-8-20 to 15-13-103
Goals: Dylan Taylor 2
Best: Jacob Groot, Steven Grooby, Shaun Hastings, Daniel Scott, Rhys Marshall, Ryan Loone Garcia
The U-18’s find themselves in the position of needing to keep winning to stay in the 5 this year. A very even competition sees several sides just outside the top 5 and a chance of slipping in should 4 of the top 5 sides have a bad run for the rest of the season. Our U-18’s have enough good players to win the rest of the season and even pick up a double chance. Tall timber Jacob Groot once again played well last week in the ruck giving Groob’s and Scotty plenty of opportunities in the centre. Consistent trio Hasto, Rhys, and Ryan tried hard to lift their side but too many players dropped their heads and admitted defeat. Another test this week against WC who sit second on the ladder and if the side isn’t careful might find themselves with their 3rd loss in a row if they drop their heads like last week. As soon as the side starts to believe in themselves they just give the competition a real shake as any side can win the big one this year and our boys are definitely good enough to take it out..
