2009 GRAND FINAL

EAST GEELONG vs. BELL POST HILL

Once again we arrive at the last day in September with our destiny in our own hands. For 15 games in a row now the senior side has taken all before it and done all it can to place itself in a strong position to win its first senior premiership since the amazing comeback of 1993. It’s time for the club to write some new history.

Given a full list to pick from the selection team has certainly had a tough time picking a side. Obviously some people will be disappointed but that should all be forgotten if come 5 o’clock we are holding aloft the premiership cup.

On such a big occasion there is also added motivation in the form of a couple of milestones. Sean O’Leary today plays his 200th game for the club. Sean has been around since the U/11s and has been a fantastic player and clubman for the club (and an exciting one for the supporters) since beginning his senior career in 1996. The club captain, Ryan Coy, plays his 50th game today also. Having already won a best and fairest in his 3 years at the club it has been a great time for the little midget. Good luck today boys.

The D-Grade netball has the chance to make club history by becoming the first senior netball team to win a premiership. The week started well for the team with Nicole Discher winning the D-Grade League best and fairest. Congratulations Nicole!!!

The girls have a great chance of winning given they advanced straight to the grand final, but Werribee will be a tough proposition and the girls must be on their game to ensure they win.

Finally, the U/15s have the chance to win the premiership also. The same group of girls played in the U/13s premiership a couple of years ago so they have a fantastic idea of what is required and we wish them all the best of luck.

Tickets are selling fast for Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 19th September at the clubrooms. Tickets are $80 and seats are limited to 160 people. See Sean and Brooke O’Leary for tickets.

The club would like to take the opportunity to thanks all its hard working volunteers, trainers, time keepers, water boys and supporters that gave their precious time to assist the club in its successes in 2009. Hopefully come 5pm tonight, with three premierships in the ‘kitty’, the journey will have been worth it…….

Good luck to all sides in the grand final this week.

Second Semi Final 29th - 30th August 2009

It was three from three last Saturday with all teams involved in second semi finals progressing through to the grand final and earning a weeks rest.

The day started well with the U/15 netballers having an overtime victory against Bannockburn by a goal, 25 to 24. Best players were S. Maurer, J. Nolan and S. Rowbottom (14 goals).

The day got even better when the D Grade netballers led all day to register an upset 34 goals to 27 victory.  Good players were Sam Rundle, Brooke O’Leary (17 goals) and Ash Yeates.

Finally the day was topped off with a fantastic, albeit heart stopping, win by the senior football team against Bell Post Hill. The boys led all day and probably should have been further in front at three quarter time than the 44 points they actually were. There were some nervous times in the last quarter though as the Panthers rallied to close to within 2 goals with 10 minutes still on the clock. Fortunately the heavens opened and we were able to tough it out and hold on for a 10 point win. Better players in tough conditions for football were Adam Skrobalak (4 goals), Ryan Cameron, Robert Chamberlain, Ryan Coy, Rob Cutajar and Michael Jennings.

In the cut throat finals we played in on the weekend though it was a different story. On Saturday, the U/16s went down to Lara by 22 points with best players being K. Cannon, L. Morris, C. Robinson, L. Dundon, A. Duncan and N. Cameron.

On Sunday, the U/18s lost their second straight final by less than a goal going down to Bannockburn by 3 points in a tough low scoring encounter. Good players were J. Tresize, H. Ververs, M. Quarrell, M. Elliott and J. Nolan.

Upcoming functions include:

·         Grand Final Night on Saturday 12th September – Win Lose or Draw, we will be celebrating the 2009 season and the teams making the Grand Final with a live band, drinks and food! All are welcome to hopefully celebrate 3 Victories!!!

·         Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 19th September at the clubrooms. Tickets are $80 and seats are limited to 160 people (tickets selling fast). See Sean and Brooke O’Leary for tickets.

Prelimanary Finals 22nd/23rd August 2009

With the seniors having a valuable weeks rest it fell upon the other grades to hold centre stage in the first week of the finals.

The reserves put in a disappointing showing going down to Bell Post Hill by 32 points. After failing to capitalise with the breeze in the first quarter it was always going to be tough to stay in touch. Better players were Matt Confait, Mocca Stevenson, Rhys Cameron, Aaron McDonald and Mitch Stephens. This ends the Reserves season and we would like to congratulate Mocca on a sterling job in a role that is definitely a tough gig.

The U/18s were unlucky not to steal the points in their qualifying final against Werribee. After a slow start the boys hit their straps in the last quarter but they couldn’t bridge the gap and finally went down by 4 points. Good players were J. Bouwman, I. Williams, T. De Rossa, J. Nolan and H. Ververs.

The U/16s had a 35 point win as they aim for back to back premierships. Best players were L. Morris, N. Cameron and L. Brocks.

In netball news, the D Grade had a 12 goal victory over North Geelong to book a spot in the second semi final against Werribee. Best players were Emily Carlon (18 goals), Brooke O’Leary (17 goals) and Nicole Discher.

The U/13 netballers unfortunately had a 6 goal loss which ended their season. Good players were K. Menzies, O. Weakly and T. Gaskin.

Upcoming functions include:

·         Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 19th September at the clubrooms. Tickets are $80 and seats are limited to 160 people. See Sean and Brooke O’Leary for tickets.

Good luck to all sides this week in the first week of the finals. Hopefully the U/18s and Reserves football teams, and U/13s and D Grade netball teams, can have wins. The senior football team and U/15s netball have a week off due to them finishing on top of the ladder.

Round 18, Geelong West vs. East Geelong, 15-08-09

The seniors eased their way through the final round with an 86 point win over Blue West. With a number of players injured or rested it gave a great opportunity to those blokes fighting for a game to show their wares and possibly secure a berth in our second semi final team. Best players were Ryan Closter (8 goals), Michael Jennings and Simon Prymke.

The undermanned reserves side struggled to shake off Blue West but eventually drew away in the last quarter to record a 34 point win. They go into this weekend’s elimination final with a vastly different side and every chance of progressing to the first semi final. Good players were Rhys Cameron, Matt Confait and Matt Harris. The U/18s won a close tussle by 5 points to finish second on the ladder. Good players were J. Bouwman, S. Kingsley and J. Gahan. The U/16s lost by 17 points to Lara with its best player being L. Morris.

In netball news, the A grade had a 31 goal win over Blue West to finish the year off on a high. Congratulations to Amy on a fantastic first up coaching effort. Hopefully she is keen to continue on again in 2010. In other grades, the B Grade won by 28 goals, the C Grade won by 30 goals and the D Grade won by 44 goals. In junior netball, the U/15s won by 51 goals while the U/13s won by 34 goals. Best players across the netball grades were Amy Dervusoski (A Grade), Louise Lawler (B Grade), Sharon Craig (C Grade), Brooke O’Leary (D Grade), M. Webb (U/15s) and K. Funston (U/13s).

Congratulations to the club best and fairest winners announced last weekend. Ryan Closter won the senior’s award after a sensational final round that saw him go past Choco Chamberlain who led from early in the year. In the A Grade netball a tie eventuated between Amy Dervusoski and Peta Kenny after great games by both in the last round allowed them to overtake Rachel Baker.

In other football grades, Andrew Ruiter won the reserves award for the second time while Hayden Ververs won the U/18s which was great effort considering he played many games in the seniors. In netball, winners were Amanda Rathje (B Grade), Ash Wooton (C Grade) and Nicole Discher (D Grade).

Round 17, Corio vs. East Geelong, 08-08-09

We got a nasty scare against a tenacious Corio outfit last week where for about a quarter and a half it looked as if all our hard work through the year that helped us gain top spot would amount to nothing. Down by a kick and a half early in the last quarter and really struggling to get things going we dug deep to kick 5 of the next 6 goals and finally run out 18 point winners. With other results going in our favour all we need to do now is defeat Blue West for our 14th win in a row and we finish on top and get a much needed weeks rest.  Good players last week were Ryan Closter (4 goals), Dean O’Hara, Dean Oliver and Cody Watson.

The extremely undermanned reserves side played a valiant game against the top of the table Devils but was never really in the hunt. Good players were Lachlan Jackman (2 goals), Ben Bolton and Andrew Ruiter.

The U/18s avenged their close loss to Corio earlier in the season by winning by 9 points and securing a double chance. Good players were J. Ververs (4 goals), J. Bouwmann and P. Quarrell. The U/14s had a 13 point loss with the best player going to B. Coster. The U/16s won by 3 points with its best player being L. Brocks.

In netball news, the A grade had a 24 goal loss to Corio. Hopefully the girls can finish off a season where great improvement was made with a win against Blue West this week. In other grades, the B Grade won by 15 goals, the C Grade won by 11 goals and the D Grade though continued on their winning way winning by 38 goals. In junior netball, the U/15s lost by 6 goals while the U/13s won by 36 goals. Best players across the netball grades were Rachel Baker (A Grade), Shae Rowbottom (B Grade), Ash Wootton (C Grade), Sally Massey (D Grade), Shae Rowbottom (U/15s) and Logan Jozipovic (U/13s).

Congratulations to Amanda Rathje who played her 100th game of netball for East Geelong last week. This was a great effort for great player and club person.

A great day was had by all at Sunday's major draw. After all these years it was good to be able to have big crowd and still be able to move around the room.

Good luck to all sides this week against Blue west. Hopefully we can finish of the regular season with 9 wins!

Round 16, East Geelong vs. Inverleigh, 01-08-09

It was a hard fought victory on Saturday against an Inverleigh side playing for its life. Dominant quarters with the breeze and a tight last quarter into it, gave us a 33 point win and moved us a step closer to the minor premiership. With a lot of sore bodies playing and a number of absentees, the game wasn’t pretty but we did enough to make it 12 wins in a row.

Better players were Ryan Closter (3 goals), Ryan Cameron, Luke Cormack and Dean O’Hara.

The reserves absolutely belted Inverleigh to the tune of 154 points. Even though Mocca kicked 5 goals, it was great to see four other players chime in with 4 goals as well. Good players were Mark Thomas, Matt Confait, Daniel Singleton (4 goals) and Lachlan Jackman (4 goals).

In junior footy, the U/18s had a 34 point win after a blistering first quarter of 7 goals 2 behinds. Good players were J. Bouwmann, Dylan Irwin and Jake Nolan. The U/14s had a 33 point loss with the best player going to L. Matthews. The U/16s lost by 32 points with its best player being L. Diaz.

In netball news, the A grade had a 2 goal loss to Inverleigh in a tight and valiant struggle in which we led at every change. Unfortunately we could carry ourselves over the line. In other grades, the B Grade won by 12 goals while the C Grade lost by 5 goals which brought to an end any chance of a finals berth. The D Grade though continued on their winning way beating Inverleigh by 19 goals. In junior netball, the U/15s won by 14 goals while the U/13s lost by 4 goals. Best players across the netball grades were Peta Kenny (A Grade), Amanda Rathje (B Grade), Ellie Rowarth (C Grade), Sam Rundle (D Grade), M. Webb (U/15s) and K. Menzies (U/13s).

Round 15, East Geelong vs. Thomson, 25-07-09

After 11 wins in a row, the senior side now finds itself perched on top of the ladder and with its final destiny in its own hands. Keep winning and we will secure the double chance and a vital weeks rest. Slip up in the last three games and who knows?

It was fantastic day for the club last week. A huge crowd welcomed our sponsors, past players and dignitaries attending the official opening of the new clubroom extension. The seniors, whilst not playing their greatest football, prevailed over a tenacious Thomson side in a scrappy and wind affected game by 14 points. A great first quarter set up our lead and we were never headed from there. Good players were Dean Oliver, Danny Liston, Sam Paisley and Adam Skrobalak (4 goals).

The Reserves also had a great game beating Thomson by 44 points. Given we have a couple of easier games coming up that virtually assures the boys of a finals berth. The double chance is also still a possibility. Better players on the day were Tom Scanlon, Daniel Singleton, Matt Confait and Daniel Spencer. The U/18s also had a fantastic win coming from 3 goals down early in the last quarter and kicking into the breeze to record a 6 point win. Good players were Josh Tresize (6 goals), J. Bouwman and M. Quarrell.

In netball news, the A grade suffered a big loss by 35 goals to Thomson. Unfortunately injuries and the unavailability of key players have now officially ended the girls’ finals hopes but our efforts were much improved on last year. In other grades, the B Grade went down by 18 goals to Thomson, while the C Grade lost by 1 goal which means finals action for them will be difficult to attain. The D Grade though continued on their winning way beating Thomson by 6 goals. Best players across the senior netball grades were Rachel Baker (A Grade), Amanda Rathje (B Grade), Laura Wood (C Grade) and Emily Carlon (D Grade). Junior grades had a bye on the weekend.

Round 14, East Geelong vs. Bell Post Hill, 18-07-09

The East Geelong Football and Netball Club would this week like to welcome all Sponsors, Past Players and supporters to the official opening of the new Pike Hall renovations this coming Saturday 25th July. I’m sure all will agree that the works look great and the club would sincerely like to thank Daryl Rowbottom (and all others who assisted) for his efforts in coordinating the project.

A brilliant effort after quarter time last week against BPH sets up a tantalising clash with Thomson this week for top spot on the ladder. We started sluggishly last week and found ourselves 33 points down at the first change. After that though we kicked 18 goals to 5 to record our 10th victory in a row. Best players were Simon Prymke, Michael Jennings, Danny Liston and Sam Paisley.

The Reserves led all day to beat BPH by 3 goals. This moves the boys one step closer to the finals and today’s clash is very important in the finals race. Better players last week were Tom Scanlon, Mick Barry, Daniel Singleton and Daniel Spencer. The U/18s also had an easy victory by 101 points over BPH. Good players were Josh Tresize (6 goals), H. Ververs and J. Bouwman.

In netball news, the A grade lost by 22 goals to BPH and are finding it hard to cover the loss of its two best shooters. This now makes the finals a difficult proposition unfortunately. In other grades, the B Grade were defeated by 10 goals while both the C and D Grades won by a goal. Best players across the senior netball grades were Peta Kenny (A Grade), Amanda Rathje (B Grade), Mel Baum (C Grade) and Brooke O’Leary (D Grade). Currently the D Grade and U/15s are assured of playing in the finals, while the C Grade can still make it if results go their way.

Upcoming functions include:

·         Past Players Day/Sponsors Day/Opening of renovation on July 25th vs. Thomson. See Keith Jamieson/Sean O’Leary for more details;

·         Major Draw on Sunday August 9th at the clubrooms. Tickets are $60 from Michael O’Leary.

·         Senior Vote Count on Saturday 15th August at the clubrooms.

·         Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 19th September at the clubrooms.

Good luck to all sides this week against Thomson. Hopefully we can have 9 wins!

Round 13, East Geelong vs. Belmont Lions 11-07-09

It was a huge win last week against Belmont by 119 points with the key factor being our ability to keep the Lions to only 1 goal for the day. This avenged our round 2 loss to the same team and its amazing how much things can change in 12 weeks. That makes it 9 wins in a row as we come into the biggest two games of the year for the club as a whole. First off is Bell Post Hill and with 5 players returning hopefully we can get over the line. Best players last week were Ryan Closter (7 goals), Michael Jennings, Pat Hoey, Cody Watson and Michael O’Leary.

The Reserves also put in a great effort by keeping Belmont to just two late goals in a 51 point win. The boys need to keep winning to ensure that they play finals and with players returning this is a big chance. Good players last week were Aaron McDonald, John Adams, Matt Confait and Daniel Singleton.

The U/18s had a 47 point win against Belmont to move back to 3rd on the ladder. Best players were M. Elliott, J. Tresize and J. Bouwman.

It was a mixed result for the netballers. The A-Grade had a disappointing result that may have put paid to our finals hopes. The girls went down by 12 goals with the best player being Amy Dervusoski. In other grades, the B grade had a 40 goal-all draw, while the C and D grades, and U/15s and U/13s, all had wins.

Congratulations to Michael O’Leary who plays his 250th game for the club this week. Due to some bad injuries it has taken a while for him to get there but it definitely is great to see him keep persisting. Hopefully we can get a win today to make the day even more memorable.

Please note that due to lack of numbers, the Ladies Luncheon was unfortunately cancelled.

Good luck to all sides this week against Bell Post Hill. Hopefully we can have 9 wins!

Round 12, Werribee vs. East Geelong 04/07/09

It was a tough win last week against Werribee at Galvin Park, a place where victories have been few and far between over the last 20 years. While we prevailed by 33 points, it was a tough fight from the outset. This makes it 8 wins in a row and hopefully we can make it 9 in a row against Belmont this week by avenging our disappointing Round 2 loss. Best players last week were Adam Skrobalak (6 goals), Justin Oppenlander and Michael Jennings.

The Reserves were always behind the 8 ball after allowing top side Werribee to kick the first 6 goals of the game. From there we were always playing catch and we finally went down by 32 points. Good players were Andrew Ruiter, Tom Scanlon and Daniel Singleton.

The U/18s lost to second placed Werribee by 30 points and now sit in fourth position on the ladder. Best players were J. Bouwman, S. Soldani and S. Kingsley.

It was another horror round for the netballers with the best result being a draw for the D-Grade against a powerful group of Werribee teams. The A-Grade lost by 27 goals to the undefeated ladder leaders. In other grades, the B grade had an 8 goal loss, the C grade went down by 21 goals whilst the D grade drew after once again being in front late in the game but not being able to hang on. The U/15s lost their second game by a point in a row going down 19 goals to 18.  Best players in each grade were Rachel Baker (A Grade), Kylie Stripling (B Grade), Ash Wootton (C Grade), Nicole Discher (D Grade), M Stevens (U/15s) and M. Webb (U/13s).

Round 11, East Geelong vs. North Geelong 27/06/09

Another great first quarter display set up a 59 point win against a young and tenacious North Geelong last week. In scenes reminiscent of the week before, the ball was coming out of the middle with ease and the forwards capitalised. This win puts us in the top 3 for the first time after a slow start to the season. Better players against the Magpies were Rob Chamberlain, Ryan Cameron, Michael Jennings, Adam Skrobalak (7 goals) and Ryan Coy (6 goals). Congratulations to Josh Tresize on his first senior game for the club as well last week.

The reserves had a great 10 goal win given a few players were either rested or were absent. It was good to see B-Bop back running around. Good players were Andrew Ruiter, Matt Confait, Sean O’Leary (7 goals) and Mitch Stephens.

The U/18s came back to earth against the ladder leaders North Geelong. With a few players out or in the seniors, the boys did well to be in it at 3 quarter time but couldn’t quite go on with it and finally went down by 68 points. Good players last week were J. Bouwman, S. Soldani and J. Gahan.

It was a horror round for the netballers with the best result being a draw for the U/13s. The A-Grade lost by 5 goals in what was an 8 point game given the close proximity of both teams on the ladder. In other grades, the B grade had a 15 goal loss, the C grade went down by 9 goals and the D grade lost by 4 goals after being in front by up to 8 goals at times. Best players in each grade were P. Kenny (A Grade), Emily Carlon (B Grade), Tara Alsop (C Grade), K. Ward (D Grade), M Stevens (U/15s) and O. Weakley (U/13s).

Good luck to all sides this week against Werribee. Hopefully we can have 9 wins!

Round 10, Bannockburn vs. East Geelong 20/06/09

An absolutely brilliant first quarter display set up what was a resounding victory against ladder leaders Bannockburn last week. Great skills, marking, running and goal kicking were the order of the day as we took a 59 point lead into the first break. A final quarter where we took the foot off the pedal was the only blemish for the day but relentless pressure and running for the first three quarters meant that it was all academic in the end. We finally won by 7 goals and a win this week against North will see us in the top 3 (and maybe on top if results and margins go our way) where we hope to stay. Better players last week were Danny Liston, Ryan Cameron, Adam Skrobalak (8 goals) and Michael Jennings (so many acts of bravery!).

The reserves were disappointing in their first serious challenge for a while going down to the Tigers by 16 points. Having good players on the park doesn’t always translate into success and a lot of work needs to be done to ensure we take part in September. Good players were Tom Scanlon, Matt Confait, and David Kiss.

The U/18s won a tight one against Bannockburn by 9 points to maintain second spot on the ladder. A big game against the undefeated ladder leaders this week will show us where they really are at. Good players last week were J. Bouwman, S. Soldani and I. Williams.

In netball news, an undermanned A Grade returned to the winners list with a 12 goal win over Bannockburn. A win this weekend will see the girls go 6 points clear in the top 5 which will be a healthy advantage with some tough games to come. In other grades, the B grade had a 17 goal win, the C grade were victors by 19 goals and the D grade triumphed by 26 goals. In the juniors, the U/15s won while the U/13s lost. Best players in each grade were R. Baker (A Grade), B. Rowbottom (B Grade), A. Wootton (C Grade), K. Mee (D Grade), S. Rowbottom (U/15s) and K. Menzies (U/13s).

Congratulations to Daniel (Butch) Singleton who play's his 50th game this week.

Good luck to all sides this week against North Geelong. Hopefully we can have 9 wins!

Round 9, East vs. Winchelsea 13/06/09

The seniors had a hard fought 33 point win over a tenacious Winchelsea last week. We found it difficult to breakdown their zone defence at times but with more strike power up forward, and a dominant backline the game was never really in doubt.

With another 3 or 4 players due back this week against Bannockburn we are in a great spot to knock off the new ladder leaders on their home turf. Hopefully we turn up to play on Saturday as a win will certainly set up our season as we go into a tough stretch of games.

Better players last week were John Sinclair, Cody Watson, Ryan Closter (6 goals) and Rob Cutajar.

On a sad note, we bid farewell to John Sinclair this week who is returning home to Port Lincoln in South Australia. A former senior best and fairest winner, Sinkers was in great form (as his BOG last week proved) so he will be a big loss.

The reserves had an easy 74 point win against Winchelsea with Mocca Stevenson leading the way up forward in his 200th game kicking 5 goals. Ben Craig also had a memorable 200th game kicking a couple of goals. Better players on the day were Ben Thomas in his first game for East, Matt and Daniel Spencer, and Ben Bolton.

The U/18s kept Winchelsea scoreless in a resounding 143 point win that moved them into second position on the ladder. Best players were J. Tresize (7 goals), M. Quarrell and L. Diaz.

In netball news, the A Grade fell back to earth after Winchelsea inflicted a 25 goal loss. A poor first quarter was the difference between the two sides as we could never get back in the game after that point. The next two games will be pivotal in terms of our finals chances. The B grade had a heart breaking 1 goal loss while the C, D, U/15s and U/13s all had wins.

Best players in each grade were C. Demooy (A Grade), M. McGuigan (B Grade), A. Wootton (C Grade), N. Discher (D Grade), S. Maurer (U/15s) and M.Rohdes-Beattie (U/13s).

Round 8, Anakie vs. East Geelong 30-05-09

The seniors had a solid 49 point win over Anakie last week in very cold and windy conditions. Whilst we took the foot off the pedal in the last quarter (having limited options on the bench didn’t help either) our first 3 quarters were top shelf as we piled on 20 goals. Like the week before against West it was an extremely consistent performance across all players but better ones on the day were Simon Prymke, Dean McInnes and Dean O’Hara who made a fantastic return to the seniors kicking 7 excellent goals. We are now in the top 5 and a win for Round 9 will further entrench our position.

The reserves had a tough 17 point win against Anakie with one of the highlights being the fact that Mocca didn’t have to kick a bag of goals for us to win. This put us into the top 5 as well and with up to 7 players returning to the seniors today the side can only get better. Good players on the day were Aaron McDonald, Tom Scanlon and Matt Confait.

The U/18s had a 4 point loss to Inverleigh but still sit in 3rd position on the ladder. Injuries and absentees hurt hard but the result was still disappointing. Good players were Josh Tresize, P. Quarrell and J. Nolan.

In netball news, only the A Grade was able to beat Anakie (39 goals to 25), and as a result they moved into 4th position on the ladders. The Round 9 match against Winchelsea is pivotal given they sit one position below us on the ladder. The other grades all had losses that possibly could have been victories had things gone right. Most shocking was the D Grade’s first loss of the season to a side sitting winless on the bottom of the ladder. Best players in each grade were A. Dervusovski (A Grade), A. Rathje (B Grade), A. Wootten (C Grade) and J. Blakeborough (D Grade). In junior netball, the U/15s had a win while the U/13s lost.

Congratulations to Mocca Stevenson and Benny Craig who both play their 200th games for the club this week against Winchelsea. Both these guys have been fantastic stalwarts for the club over the years and they are both extremely deserving of this milestone.

Good luck to all sides against Winchelsea. Hopefully we can have 9 wins!

Round 7, East Geelong vs. Geelong West 23/05/09

The seniors had a big victory by 142 points against Geelong West last week and this gave us some much need percentage and saw us rise to sixth on the ladder. It was an extremely consistent performance across all players but better ones on the day were Michael Jennings, Danny Liston and Simon Prymke.

The reserves had a comprehensive 89 point win over West which also leaves them in 6th spot on the ladder. Good players last week were Dean O’Hara (6 goals), Shane Goodall and Daniel Spencer.

The U/18s had an 80 point win against BPH and are riding high in second spot on the ladder. With Hayden Ververs playing his first senior game last week it is good to see the young guys coming through and playing well and putting the pressure on for senior spots.  Good players were J. Tresize, P. Quarrell and T. De Rosso.

In netball news, it was a fantastic (and rare) clean sweep for the girls last week over Geelong West. The A Grade won by 62 goals and this was the tone of the day as all sides won by 15+ goals. Best players in each grade were A. Dervusovski (A Grade), D. Rotana (B Grade), T. Sorger (C Grade) and M. Stevens (D Grade). In junior netball, the U/15s and U/13s both had big wins.

In social news, tonight is the Cocktail Night which is always a great night. For every non member that you bring along you get a free drink so bring as many as you can. Entry is $10 and a light supper and entertainment is provided.

Good luck to all sides today against Anakie. Hopefully we can make it another 9 wins!

Round 6, East Geelong vs. Corio 16/05/09

The seniors had a great win against Corio last week by 17 points. This puts us right back in the mix and a win this week against Blue West will help. A fantastic second quarter into the breeze set up the victory and best players were Choco, Hildo and Brent Thomas.

The reserves had a 17 point loss to Corio in a gutsy effort with an undermanned side. Good players were Shane Goodall, A. Ruiter and Adam Mamaj.

The U/18s lost by 2 points with a kick after the siren to give us the win going wide. Better players were J. Tresize, A. Silaev and A. Soldani.

In netball news, the A, C and D grades had excellent victories while the B grade continued their struggles by going down.  Best players last week were N. Van Leerdam (A Grade), M. Taylor (B Grade), S. Craig (C Grade) and K. Ward (D Grade). The U/15s and U/13s also had wins which was fantastic.

Memberships and Merchandise - Polo's & Hoodies are now available at the Clubrooms on Thursday & Saturday nights. Please see Kathy Dowling for more information.

Our next major function is the Crowny and Cocktail night on Saturday May 30th. This is always a great night so set it aside in your diary.

Remember also that it would be great for all players to generate a player sponsorship for $100. See Kathy Dowling, for details or payment.

Round 5 Inverleigh vs. East Geelong 09/05/09

The seniors returned to the winners list last week with a strong victory against Inverleigh. Whilst the margin was a comprehensive 47 points, it could have been a lot more but for inaccurate kicking. Best players were Simon Prymke, Danny Liston and Chris Hilet. A similar performance today will see us back in the mix for a top 3 spot.

The reserves had a huge win against the Hawks by 122 points. Good players were Luke Price, Ben Bolton and Dean O'Hara (4 goals).

The U/18s came back to earth with a thud as they went down to Inverleigh by 28 points. Better players were J. Gahan, H. Ververs and P. Quarrell.

In netball news, the A and D grades had excellent victories while the B and C grades continued their struggles by going down to Inverleigh.   Best players last week were A. Hardiman (A Grade), A. Rathje (B Grade), E. Anderson (C Grade) and S. Collins (D Grade). The U/15s and U/13s also had a win which was fantastic.

Good luck to all sides on Saturday in both football and netball. Hopefully we can make it 6 wins against Corio.

Round 4, 02nd May 2009

Another tight loss, this time to Thomson by 5 points, sees us with our backs against the wall and with a must win game against an improving Inverleigh this week.

Last week the seniors gave up a golden opportunity with a disgraceful 3rd quarter. While we finished with a wet sail, time ran out on us. Better players were Rob Chamberlain, Ryan Coy and Adam Skrobalak.

Congratulations to John Sinclair who played his 50th game for the club last week.

The Reserves on the other hand overcame a slow start to run over the top of Thomson by 36 points. Good players Ben Bolton, Aaron McDonald and Skinny Robinson (4 goals). The U/18s continued their unbeaten start to the season beating Thomson by 40 points. Best players were Josh Tresize and Hayden Ververs.

In netball news, the A, B and C grades had big losses against some well drilled Thomson sides. The D grade though continued their unbeaten start to the season. In other netball news, congratulations to Sharon Craig who plays her 100th game for the club today.

She joins Sam Rundle, Brooke Ferguson and Kylie Stripling as other current players to play 100 games.

Good luck to all sides on Saturday in both football and netball. Hopefully we can make it 6 wins against Inverleigh.

Round 3, 25-04-09

In wild and woolly conditions at Bell Post Hill we were no match for the Panthers after a dismal first half. Our second loss in a row makes a win on Saturday against our arch rivals very important to ensure we stay in touch with the pace-setters. Best players last week were Dean Oliver, Chris Hilet, Mick Jennings and Daniel Singleton.

The Reserves also had a slow start that cost them the game as they could never catch up. Mocca once again was in the goals kicking 4 majors while other good players were Gunnsy, Pricey and Spanner.

In netball news, the A Grade had a high scoring draw against Bell Post Hill in a game of great skill. The B and C grades had losses while the D Grade had their third straight victory downing the Panthers by 3 goals. Best players were Emma Ubergang (A), Denova Rotana, Sharon Craig (C) and Nicole Discher (D)

Good luck to all sides today in both football and netball. Hopefully we can make it 6 wins against Thomson.

18-04-09 Round 2

We came back to earth with a thud last week in a poor performance against Belmont. While 20 minutes of football nearly won it for us, the performance for the majority of the game was poor. Yes some poor umpiring didn't help, but good football for the whole game means poor decisions do not become a factor. Best players were Denham Hayter, Ryan Coy, John Sinclair and Ryan Closter (5 goals).

The Reserves had their first win for the year with Mocca leading the way with 6 goals. Mick Berry and Garth Towan also played well in their first games for the club.

The Netties had a clean sweep against Belmont with all senior and junior grades winning. This is the first time this has happened which is a credit to the hard work that Amy and Karen are putting in. Well done.

Tonight is the Mystery Bus Tour which leaves the club at 7pm. There are tickets @ $40 each still available from Simon and Rachel Baker.

08-04-09 Round 1

It was a great start to the year last week with a solid win over a tough

and persistent Werribee by 38 points. A great second and last quarter saw

us stifle the Centurions attack for opportunities, while our forwards,

namely Ryan Closter (5 goals) and Dean O'Hara (3 goals) were able to

capitalise. Best players were Denham Hayter in a great return to the club

and Michael Jennings, Ryan Closter, and Cody Watson in their first game for

East Geelong.

The Reserves could never quite get into the game against Werribee and

therefore had a disappointing loss. Whilst the team will get even stronger

over the coming weeks we cant afford to let these games slip. Good players

were Daniel Singleton, Mocca Stevenson (5 goals) and Frank Spencer.

The Netties had a poor beginning to season 2009 with only the inaugural

D-Grade side having a win. With Werribee being a traditionally tough team

to beat in all grades, the girls struggled to get into the games in A, B

and C grade. With a number of new players though, I am sure the girls will

start to gel in the near future and wins are not too far away.

A great night was had by all last week at our annual mini draw. One of our

sponsors, Tony Ziino from Geelong Kerbing took home the main prize with

Gail and Peter Ferguson winning second prize. Thanks to all who brought or

purchased tickets. The night was a great success. Our next function is a

Mystery Bus Tour on April 25th. See Sean O'Leary or Simon Baker for more

information.

Next week we play Belmont Lions at Winter Reserve in Belmont for the annual

Mark Lomas trophy. Mark was a former coach of both clubs who passed away

after a short illness at a very young age. The two clubs have been playing

for the trophy since the early 90's and only 4 or 5 times have we not held

the trophy. It should be a great game as both clubs appear to have

recruited well.
