NETBALL WRAP 23rd June 2009

East Geelong netball had a great round away at Bannockburn with all teams except under 13’s coming away with a win. The U13’s side tried hard all day but the goals wouldn’t fall for them. Kendra Menzies worked hard in defence bringing in plenty of turnovers.

The U15 side remains undefeated after a top of the table clash with Bannockburn. It was a close match with East down with only a few minutes remaining, the girls were able to force the turnovers to come out with a one goal win. Well done to Shae Rowbottom and Jemma Nolan for playing excellent games.

In the Seniors this week, D grade returned to their winning ways, trouncing Bannockburn 33 to 7. Kirra Mee was instrumental in the mid court and continues to improve each week. Melanie Henderson and Kaysey Ward were also strong. D grade currently sits second on percentage alone. They come up against north Geelong this week who are 4th with only one less win on the board.

C grade continue to play a strong, team game with excellent results. With the addition of Kylie Stripling into the midcourt, the C grade girls never looked in doubt winning 30-11. Ash Wootton played a brilliant game in defence, with Ellen Anderson converting all opportunities at the other end. The C grade team are currently 7th and will play 2nd placed North Geelong this week. The girls are only 1 game outside the 5 so all games from here on in are crucial.

B grade looked like a different team on Saturday, playing confidently to win 41-24. Britt Rowbottom stood tall in the goal ring, accounting for the majority of goals scored. Amanda Rathje continued her solid form in defence and Louise Lawler provided the vital link in the centre court. B grade are currently 9th, 3 games out of the 5. North are sitting 7th on percentage only so this week is a great opportunity for the girls.

A grade had a difficult day with two players out and half the side struggling with illness. The girls were pleased to stretch their lead in the last 47-35. Rachel Baker worked tirelessly in centre and wing attack to support the gaolers and apply pressure down the court. Emma Uebergang again dominated the goal circle, with Peta Kenny also working hard in defence. This week will be a test as girls try to protect 5th spot on the ladder form the fast finishing North Geelong.

It would be great to hear some support for all grades this week, every team has a difficult but winnable match. Make the effort to arrive a little earlier, or stay later and support your team mates!

NETBALL WRAP 01st June 2009

A grade had a great win again on the weekend, moving them up to 4th position on the ladder going into the break. Strong defensive work down the court and a solid performed by Rachel Baker in the mid court set the team up for a good win. The girls are very much looking forward to taking on Winchelsea at home who have moved into 5th spot on the ladder.

B grade played more consistently on the weekend however went down by 11 goals. Amanda Rathje and Denova Rotana worked hard in defence to minimise the goals, however the attack end weren’t able to capitalise on these turnovers. East and Winch are on the same number of wins so this will be a good test for the B grade squad.

The C grade team went down by 5 goals to Anakie, who are currently sitting third on the ladder. Sloppy play cost some crucial turnovers in the first half and the team wasn’t able to get these back. A steadied approach in the last quarter saw the girls claw back from a 10 goal deficit to just 5 goals. Ash Wootton stood strong in defence, with Sharon Craig running tirelessly through the midcourt to provide support. Winchelsea are winless in C grade so the girls will be looking for a big win here to set themselves up for the remainder of the season.

Unfortunately the winning run for D grade came to a finish this week, going down to Anakie also be 5 goals. Jacinta Blakeborough controlled the mid-court for the team, with Sally Massey playing well in defence and Sarah Collins working hard in the goal ring. After this slight hiccup, the D grade girls will re-focus ahead of the next round clash with 5th placed Winchelsea.
