Round 1
A big welcome to everyone for the 2009 Season of LVFL football. I would first like to congratulate all premiership winners from 2008 but more importantly our A and B Grade Netballers who won the premiership, well done girls. I would also like to welcome back all of the players from last year and also to the new faces around the club. We hope your time here is a successful one.
We are delighted to announce that the UK Hotel is once again our major sponsor so please get down there and support Ivar and Tanya as they support us so well. We also welcome a new sponsor to the club Mckern Steel. We look forward to a long and successful relationship with Mick and the gang. To all players, members and supporters, please get along and support all of our sponsors as without these sponsors it would be very difficult to field a senior side let alone run the club.
We welcome Brett Fitzpatrick back to the club as our new Senior coach, Ben Murphy has been entrusted with the task of leading the Reserves and Kevin Roberts has taken the reins of the Under 17ÃÂs. All three are great YCW people who have tasted the ultimate success off a Premiership. With the pre-season now behind us they are confident that we will have all football teams more competetitive than last year. Good luck lads.
On the Netball front Janelle Hobbs comes back as our A Grade coach, Jess Fitzpatrick as B Grade coach, Al ONeil as the C Grade coach and Club life member Nikki Donnellon and Cara Bastian as our joint under 17s coaches. Jo Read again takes control of the under 15s. We have had good numbers during the pre-season and we are looking to continue the success that we had in 2008. Best of luck ladies.
On the social side of things we have Joe McKern leading the charge of the fun and frivolity for 2009. Joe and his loyal band of workers that include Lisa Roberts, Moose, Carmen Concol and others we have some fantastic social events coming up. Pub golf makes a return due to popular demand, there is a Singing Bee for all of you Australian Idol wannabees, the event of the year will be the Annual Formal Ball, and with a change of venue it will be a night to remember so make sure that you pencil in the 25th July 2009. And we will round out the year with our Formal Presentation night to be held on Friday September 11. There will also be 2 X $1000 draws held as well, so there are plenty of social events around so use these to get to know the new faces around the club. The footy trip has been organised and we are heading off to Hobart on 18th September and return on 20th September. Let Joe, Moose or Buster know if you would like to attend, flights are now being booked.
Many hands make light work so if you see a job that needs to be done please jump in and help.
If you know of anyone that would like to assist us with Trainers please ask them to contact me. There is new fantastic merchandise that is for sale with a final order being placed during the first week in May. Please see Lisa Roberts if you would like to order any of the merchandise.
Since we were last here there have been several hatches, matches and dispatches. These will be in future editions of the Airings.
Today we kick off our 2009 season against Serpentine who have always been a formidable opponent, it will give us a good indication of where we are at. Following our trip to Serp we will head back to the UK for our incentives. They will be on at 7pm sharp so get back there for a few frothies and reflect on our round 1 performance. Good luck to all sides.
Round 2
The day kicked off with our under 17âs. The boys put in a spirited first quarter (lead by some brilliance and courage by Rory Lowe) putting on a lot of defensive and score board pressure, as the boys kicked away to a handy 4 goal lead at the first change. To Serps credit they came out in the second quarter and put the pressure back on us, only allowing our boys to kick 2 points as they added 4.4 to level the game at half time. The third quarter was a scrappy affair as both sides struggled to find options up forward, Serp holding a 4-point lead going into the last quarter. The message at three quarter time was for the boys to play the way they did in the first quarter.Thatâs exactly what they did as Tim McGlone, Ryan Weeding & Troy Larkins stepped up their work rate and Sam Mona with some inspiration late in the game to spur the boys on to grab a 4-point victory. Best players were Tim McGlone, Nicholas Rix, Aaron Giri, Rory Lowe, Ryan OâKeeffe and Daniel Price also special mentions to our two first gamers in Jordan Baker and Ryan Maher both guys put in all day especially when things were tight they stuck to their guns and did themselves and the team proud. Also a big thanks to our two permit players on Saturday Nic Butler and Ben Deacon both boys were solid contributors all day.
The reserve team took on a new look with plenty of height across the ground. The first quarter was a scrappy affair with players from both sides coming to terms with the wind and the new look team trying to gel. Burch, Kenny and Triggy were providing consistent targets up forward and Bones and Whopper were continually winning possession. The second and third quarters seen the eagles start to gain control of the gain and through the hard in and under work of Kevin Bacon & Brad Masson the eagles had many shots on goal which they were unable to take full advantage of, the final quarter continued in the same vein as the eagles started to gel more as a team and converted the opportunities into goals. Best players were Brad Masson in an impressive debut, Hugh Trigg, Ben Rodda, Jamie Fitz (Whopper), Kenny & Matt Downie (Kevin Bacon).
This week we pay tribute to a great Clubman who has reached a great personal milestone. Alistair Duncan is a product of the Under17âs that has came through and has put his heart and soul into playing footy for the YC footclub. He is often here early on training and game days to assist in the Junior side - without being asked. He is also only too happy to work in the bar or the canteen - anything to assist the club. Today we celebrate Big Alâs 100th club game for YCW. A great effort and we hope that we see many more games in the future. Make sure you all get over and shake Idolâs hand and wish him well.
Our Senior team ran out with much enthusiasm and geez didnât they look smart in the new silky jumpers. We jumped out of the blocks and quickly established a 2-3 goal lead late in the first qtr. However our run that helped in the first qtr started to disappear and by ½ time we were facing a deficit. The boys regrouped at half time and traded goals with Serpentine in third qtr to be 3-4 goals down with a qtr to go.Kicking into the wind thye message was to run and keep running to assist. At about the 15minute mark we were still down and Oysters marked on a 45 degree angle 25m out, however a free kick was paid to Serp back on the wing due to a miscommunication between Bumble and the Umpire. Once again we regrouped from that and in the end it came down to a Kernahan goal kicked by a short back pocket player that got us over the line with about 90sec left. The siren sounded with Cronin holding the ball 40m out. The kick landed short however the 4pts were safely in the bag. A fantastic effort by all and a great reward for all of the hard work that has been done over the summer months. The standard has now been set and we must aim to better that standard each and every week. Best players were M.Peters (7 goals - a great effort), A.Purcell, J.Gordon, D.Lloyd, A.Cronin and J.McInerney.
Netball:
On the social front we have the Heaven and Hell Pub Golf on after the Marong game on 2nd May 2009 so see Joe, Lisa, Moose or Buster for your tickets. A great night to be had so get on the bus. The ball is going to come around quick so table Captains get the tables of 10 people organised ASAP and collect the money.
Over the summer we were saddened to hear that Kevin Churchillâs mother had passed away. Kevin has been involved in YCW for some time - both on the Committee as a treasurer but also as a Sponsor. Today we wear black arm bands in sympathy for Kevin and his family.
On a brighter note we are proud to announce that over the summer months that Shannon and Nadine Rees brought a bouncing baby boy into the world.
This week we welcome Inglewood to Backhuas Oval for our first home game of the year. We also have the âBring A Mateâ day today so to all of the new faces here please enjoy your day and we hope that we see you back here again. Last time out we won everything - Letâs get that winning feeling and do so again today.
Round 3
Yesterday as a Nation we remembered the brave Men and Women that we have come to know as the ANZACs. Today I would like to acknowledge the Men and Women that continue to fight to allow Australia to be the free country that it is, A Country in which we are free to choose where we work and what sport we play. May our loved ones that are in the Australian Defence Forces remain safe and we look forward to their return to our shores.
Thatâs what iâm talking about...... what a terrific day we had last Saturday at Serp, a fresh morning turning into a warm afternoon with some great results. It was great to see the footy and netball back and the teams running out to represent our club. It is a very satisfying feeling to have won everything last week due to all of the hard work performed by all at the club. Now onto the football - last Saturday we were greeted by magnificant conditions to play football in. There was no wind and a fair bit of sun - it actually felt like the end of the season and not the beginning. We welcomed Inglewood to Backhuas Oval for our first home game of the year and a large crowd also came along to see two up and coming sides battle it out.
The day usually kicks off with our under 17s, however due to a lack of numbers the Inglewood side had to forfeit. To our boys credit a lot of them rocked up and had a bit of a training run with many of them hanging around to watch the other two games and to also assist with water and boundary umpiring. This is a great help to the rest of the football sides and it never goes unnoticed. A big thanks to those boys.
Perfect conditions greeted the reserves on Saturday led by Captain Bucks Breewel who started the game like he was full of red cordial providing strong leads & marks however was unable to convert as he was outside his scoring range (25m). The 1st qtr was marked by inaccuracy however strong running from Brown, Steamboat Willy and Harro and the marking of Kenny was a sign of things to come. The 2nd quarters and the flood gates were opened with YC kicking 9 goals with Ash Raeburn being dominant in the ruck, Cam Ginger Ninja Rees, Harro and Kenny being features. Someone should have ordered Sun Loong with the 3rd & 4th quarters becoming a goal kicking procession with Willy, Joel Hilson, Kenny Zudemia (12 goals), Whopper and Brad Masson all providing excellent contributions. In general the reserves teamed well kicking 18 goals in the last half and should go into Pyramid Hill next Sunday with confidence.
Our senior team started their game looking as if we were still on our Easter break. Inglewood looked slick very early on in the game. Down by 4 points at quarter time was a good result as we had a lot more to give. A Mick Peters goal early in the second quarter looked to spark the boys but the rest of the quarter we had more turnovers from our half back line than Richmond. Twenty points down at half time Brett Fitz swung the changes with great results. More run from T Graham, S Rees and J Gordon resulted in scoreboard pressure on Inglewood. At three quarter time the boys could sense two wins in a row, momentum had swung our way. With A Cronin, B Fitz, D Llyod on top in the middle we got out to a 3 goal lead. Inglewood came again but like the week before we hung on by 1 goal, in a nail biter.
Best players; A Cronin, (who rucked all day), D Llyod, T Graham, J Gordon, S Rees, J McKern and Rob Whyte
Netball:
15 & U Netball
A young and energetic team took to the court for the first time this year, under the watchful eye of coach Cara. The girls played terrific for the first quarter and were matching a much older an taller side. Although beaten on the day, the girls put into use everything they have practiced at training. A great team effort! Best were Katie Marshall, and Laura Mc Culloch.
17 & U Netball
Congratz girls on another great win. Very tough first quarter, with scores close. The second quarter saw us capitalize on turn overs and out score Inglewood by 12, and inturn increasing our lead to have a fantastic team win. LetâÃÂÃÂs get fired up for a tough game at the HILL this week. Best were Teagan Welsh and Laurinda Thompson.
C-grade Netball
First and hopefully our only upset for the season against a strong Inglewood. Our game was unsettled with inaccurate passes and we couldnâÃÂÃÂt get our natural game going. Next week we need to create more space and keep at - it like we know we can. Another great game by Annie Leneghan, creating space, and great running by âÃÂÃÂenergiserâÃÂàHolly. Get our heads up girls and go hard this week at the HILL.
B-grade Netball
A strong start by the girls to be up by 2 at quarter time. Mel and Aimee shot and rebounded like stars all day. Sarah drove will and dominated in the wings. Issy stepped up from C grade and got stacks of touches. Coach Sharn, who was temping for Fitz, appealed to the girls to go harder and more aggressive at the ball, which they did. Stacey unfortunately went down with an injury, but still managed to cheer the team home for a comfortable win. Get well Chicky! Best on were Sarah Barry and Melissa Popple. Alison OâÃÂÃÂNeil was awarded the Foodworks voucher for her relentless defensive pressure.
A-grade Netball
Another warm day @ Backhaus saw us hit our straps. Georgia in her first game up in AâÃÂÃÂs played a great game. Our defence of Gina and Jen was tough and tight, they stole the ball heaps of times and sent it back to our attack. The gaolers took every opportunity and goaled and rebounded strongly, with the center court players feeding the ball precisely. A strong win with the best on going to the âÃÂÃÂtallâÃÂàgirl, Jen, and Jackie Crawford taking the second award. LetâÃÂÃÂs hold strong this week at HILL, play our own game and get the four points.
CONGRATULATIONS LAURINDA THOMPSON
on reaching 50 games for YCW. Laurinda is a fantastic club person, and we look forward to many more years of watching her play at YCW. Well done!Another reminder that next week we have the Heaven and Hell Pub Golf so see Joe, Lisa, Moose or Buster for your tickets. This is one of the best social events of the year so get on board. The ball is always a great night where we get to dress up and look glamourous, so get a table of 10 together - nominate a table Captain and get paid up. Once again please see Joe, Lisa, Moose or Buster.
This week we make that long trek north to Pyramid Hill. This will be a great test to where we are at. The have been a very successful club in the past few years - just falling short in the big one. We have shown that we never give up and will keep running until the final siren It is a big ground so there is plenty of room to run. Lets keep that winning feeling around the place and do it again today. Incentives will be mentioned next week after the Marong game and prior to Pub Golf kicking off.
