Mick Helyar Memorial Sheep Races 2012

Mick Helyar Memorial Sheep Races

Sunday 1st July 2012

Last Sunday the annual Mick Helyar Memorial sheep races were held at the Rainbow Recreation reserve. Despite the cold and showery conditions those who attended had a very enjoyable afternoon.

Attendance numbers were similar to last year which was a good result considering the weather conditions.

The afternoon began with a meal provided by the netball club. Then the twenty five sheep were auctioned off. Aaron Beer and Mal Smith were the auctioneers.

Then five heats were run before the heat winners contested the final. In a thrilling final Lakers Lucky Lamb proved too strong to win by a length from Helmet with Marras Mutton a short head behind in third. Luke Werner and his syndicate were the proud owners of the winning sheep. Luke was presented with the winner’s cup by Kylie Helyar.

There were many well dressed ladies and gents present. Lynette Helyar presented the fashion awards to: Best Dressed Lady - Semira O’Heaney, Best Dressed Male - Adam Schumann and Best Hat - Casey Mellington

The junior race goers were well looked after with a jumping castle which was set up inside the pavilion. Bo Smith, Mick Preston and Jason Bigham did a great job of supervising the jumping castle.

Thanks to the barrier attendants - Lucas Edelsten, Tyler Edelsten, Ben Marra, Justin Chilver, Jake Parry and Ash Cook. Stuart Christian provided the PA system.

Brett Fisher was MC for the afternoon. This capped off a very busy weekend for Brett and the Lakers. We wish Brett, Chantelle, Will and Addison all the best on their Queensland holiday.
