Weekender Notes Rd. 9
On the football oval the day kicked off with the fourths showing the young Purples a clean set of heels for most of the match. The Hawks teamed together well with special merit to Max Askinov (Barooga Bakery), Jay Dunn (Barooga General Store), Tom Creenaune (Spanner) and Brendon Jack (Barooga IGA). The thirds played some of their best footy for the season and fittingly sent coach Frank Armfield out on a good note in his last game. The Armfield family are returning to South Australia where Frank has been promoted in his work. Their contribution to the Barooga community has been much appreciated and they will be missed. Best players included: Cal Brooks (Barooga General Store), Josh McGaw (Menthas), Riley Brooks (Andrew Jenkins Real Estate) and Xavier Hunt (Babcon.) Tom Butler kicked a bag of six goals in a workman-like performance in front of goals. The undefeated twos went on their merry way again on Saturday and easily accounted for the Purples reserves. Best on ground was Liam Ryan (Menthas award) who provided a lot of spark around the ground. Ben McNeill and Travis Nye (Bottom Pub awards) contributed to the contest with many telling possessions. Nick Flanagan (Barooga Sporties) provided solid leadership through the middle of the ground. A stellar second stanza saw the seniors pile on nine unanswered goals to break open the game against the once mighty Purples. After a slow start, Barooga started to run and receive and run and give off the ball to provide faster passage into the forward line. Ryan Forsyth and Tom Crapp were the two main line breakers whilst Brent Chapman (five goals) and Tim ODwyer also were prominent. Sean Harrap (seven goals) had the sharpshooter’s boots on for the day. New recruit Matt Chapman eased his way into the match having not played for two months with a painful back injury.
Barooga netballers ventured to Nathalia on Saturday, playing seven matches against the Purples. Unfortunately Nathalia do not have an A grade side but the depth of the Barooga Hawks came to the fore with all senior teams chalking up victories. B grade squeezed home by one goal in a thriller. C grade had nine goals in hand at siren time whilst C grade notched their first win for the season with Bec Adkins taking out the best on court award. The final score was 28 to 18. The junior netballers did not fare quite as well although the under 15s posted a solid victory by seven goals. The under 13s played out a tight encounter against the Purples with scores tied at the end of the game. Award winners were Jess Brooks and Allie Sanderson. The under 17s were well beaten by Nathalia whilst the under 11s fought hard against superior opposition. Best on court went to Abbey Bray.
