Barooga seniors posted a nine goal to one third quarter to turn their fortunes around during last Saturdayâs match against Tongala in the MFL. The Blues snatched the ascendency in the opening term and were five goals up at the first change. Down 19 points at half time the Hawks came out and blitzed their rivals with their best stanza of team football for the season. Ryan Forsyth, James Hazelman (major incentive awards) ably supported by Tyron Hill and Tim ODwyer (minor award winners) were key play makers for Barooga. Consistency across four quarters was provided by Brennan Mills allowing the Hawks to run out 31 point winners.
The reserves had to work extremely hard against formidable opposition on Saturday with Brenton Hunt (Menthas award) leading the way as ruckman and chief architect of the Barooga revival. Shaun Connor (Bottom Pub award) and Ben McNeill (Bottom Pub award) played well to keep the Barooga twos undefeated in season 2009. Joel Plough Kirk played well to take out the Sporties award.
The thirds kept pace with their more credentialed opponents from Tongala to half time. Tom Currie, Hayden Atkinson-Thring and Cameron Nye, were instrumental in keeping the young Barooga combination competitive. After half time the flood gates opened somewhat but Peter Connors and Xavier Hunt worked well to minimise the damage on the scoreboard.
The fourths disappointed in their key clash with Tongala. Both teams were on the same wins on the ladder but it was the Blues who led the fledgling Hawks to the ball on most occasions. Jay Dunn was the best for Barooga whilst Braydon Smith added to his goal tally with four majors. Awards went to: Hary Foster (Barooga Bakery), Matt Foster (Barooga General Store), Sam Rennie (Spanner award) and Daniel Russell (Barooga IGA).
