Barooga Football Netball Club travelled south to face the might of Congupna Road – not always a happy hunting ground for the Hawks footballers and netballers. For three quarters the seniors footballers held the Congupna side at bay with the scoreboard showing a comfortable 46 points (six goals 10 behinds) in front. Poor conversion was the story for the Barooga forwards who missed many gettable shots at goal. After the final change Barooga seemed to take the front off the accelerator. Congupna won many centre clearances and charged home on the scoreboard getting within 18 points before Michael Connors posted the sealer late in the game. Tom Crapp (major incentive 1) and Mathew Hyde(major incentive award 2) were the Hawks most consistent and best ball users. Minor awards went to Tim ODwyer and Sean Harrap. Coach McNamara will be hoping that his charges will make more efficient usage of the ball around the ground and in front of goal against top team Moama this Saturday at Barooga as the winner consolidates the coveted second placed ladder position, with second placed Tongala having the bye.
The reserves were hard pressed by a competitive Congupna team who served it right up to Barooga seconds in wet and greasy conditions. Once again Brenton Hunt was the main playmaker who had most influence on the 17 point win by the Hawks. Good support was given by Nick Quinane (Bottom Pub), ( Julian Kirk Bottom Pub) and Matthew Nixon (Barooga Sporties).
The thirds could not maintain their hot streak having posted three wins in successive games previously. In a must-win game the boys lost their structures and well drilled game plan. Wasting opportunities in the second quarter meant that Congupna was able to record a good lead at three quarter time. The Road ran out comfortable 25 point winners.Awards went to: Peter Connors (Menthas) Riley Brooks (Barooga General Store), Ryan Welch (Andrew Jenkins Real Estate) and Cal Brooks (Babcon).
The fourths came up against a very powerful Congupna opposition who had yet to taste defeat for the season. The young Hawks had their chances but in the final outcome The more skilful Road combination ran out winners by 31 points. Significantly, previous average winning margins had been over 100 points so Mick Dunns squad has the distinction of been the most competitive opponents to date. With further improvement in the second half of the season this could be further reduced. Awards went to: Callum Leighton-Daly (Barooga Bakery), Lachlan Wright (Barooga General Store), Max Askinov (Spanner) and (Jake Russell Barooga IGA).
Barooga netballers won three out of eight matches in awkward conditions on the courts at Congupna. C grade won comfortably in the end with awards going to Kellie Wright and Cassie Ryan The under 13s and under 15s also scored victories with best on court going to Lara Evans (13s) and Kayla Eddy (15s). Best player for other teams included Bridget Rootsey (A grade); Jackie Vogel and Brooke Stephens (B grade); Kathleen Tallent (C reserve); Cassi Perri, Mikayla Bowden and Kayla Bennett (under 17s) and Steph Humphries (under 11s).
