Weekender Notes Rd 14

Barooga fourths continued their best season for many years with a solid but not altogether convincing win over Finley at Finley last Saturday. Nine points separated the fourth-placed Hawks and seventh-placed Cats at siren time. Coach Mick Dunn noted after the game that whilst there was enough to like about the win his young charges need to keep the team rules and structures consistent over four quarters and for every match.  Awards went to:  Brayden Smith (Barooga Bakery),  Matt Foster(Barooga General Store), Daniel Russell Spanner) and Jay Dunn ( Barooga IGA).

Barooga seniors welcomed two recruits to the fold on Saturday against the Cats with ex-coach Matthew Byers making a return as well as John Creenaune who has returned to the area to be with family. Both showed indications of much to offer in the second half of the season. The bottom placed Cats were never a match for the second placed Hawks but conceding six goals would have been a worry for coach McNamara. Inaccuracy in front of goals also needs some work. Awards went to Mathew Hyde (major incentive 1) and Tom Crapp (major incentive award 2) Minor awards went to Matthew Byers and Tim ODwyer.

The reserves scored consistently in three of the four quarters to overwhelm a Finley seconds side that was significantly composed of thirds players who had played the earlier game. Assistant coach Greg Hazelman was content with the outcome overall although the second quarter proved to be a bit sluggish at times. Bottom Pub awards went to Ben Ryan  and Jason Brooks. Menthas best was Jason Nye with Jamerson McCluskey  (Barooga Sporties) also playing one of his better games for the season.

The Finley thirds reversed the trend against the Hawks with the young Cats providing their supporters with hope for the future. A very impressive Finley combination was far too good for an under-manned Barooga although coach Jimmy Brooks was pleased with the general endeavour of many of his charges for most of the game. Awards went to: Sam Jenkins (Menthas), Cal Brooks  (Barooga General Store),  James Leech (Andrew Jenkins Real Estate) and  Arthur Rootsey (Babcon). The only majors for the Hawks were scored by the mercurial Declan Ryan whose forward line savvy was rewarded with two well executed goals much to the delight of his travelling cheer squad.

On the netball courts it was Baroogas two C grade sides and the under 15s who won the day against Finley.  All three of these teams fought hard for their wins in order to stay in contention for a finals berth with the C grade posting the most emphatic victory by 41 goals. C reserve won by 10 goals whilst the under 15s margin at siren time was seven.  Barooga B grade are the other club side with a chance to play finals so to be defeated by just three goals on Saturday against Finley who was equal on the ladder was a disappointing outcome. In the other five matches Finley proved to be rather dominant on the scoreboard and won fairly convincingly.
