At three quarter time, the two top placed teams in the Murray Football League were locked together on 67 points apiece. The stage was set for a great last quarter. The Bloods wayward conversion allowed the Hawks to remain in the contest. Tocumwals forward opportunities started to look ominous for Barooga with Sean Logie hurting the Hawks on the scoreboard in the early stages of the final quarter. Half way through this exciting final stanza, Tocumwal held sway and went to a 14-point lead. John McNamaras Barooga senior team was popped the question – and to the credit of the hard running Hawks they persisted and kept running hard. Centre clearances were crucial with high leaping Matthew Hendry playing an instrumental role out of the middle and around the ground. Jamie Stanyer, Ryan Forsyth and Tyron Hill continued to repel some crucial Tocumwal forward thrusts which were rewarded with a run of five match winning goals. The Hawks ran out 21 point winners at siren time having posted their most important win of the 2009 season. The Chapman boys, Brent and Matthew, combined well in attack with 10 goals between them.
Barooga reserves won easily against an undermanned opponent racking up a 121 point win over the hapless Bloods. A shared goal kicking list was a pleasing result for the Hawks forward set-up with Simon Douglas and Matt Nixon (four each) and Ben Ryan, Jamerson McCluskey and Glen Elleray sharing seven between them. Rhys Holt played his best game for the year with many telling possessions.
Barooga thirds also played a very team-focused brand of football against the Bloods with a good even spread of players sharing the work load last Saturday. Tom Butler began in a blaze of glory booting the first three goals in quick succession in the first quarter. Hayden Atkinson-Thring and Daniel Davis set up many efficient attacking thrusts. Sam Gough was solid in defence whilst Artie Rootsey was a live-wire around the ground. Cam Nye converted three goals with Butler finishing with five majors to his name.
Fourteen goals to Barooga fourths Brayden Smith was the highlight of the Hawks stunning massive win over the young Bloods. Callum Leighton-Daly continued his great form in his on-ball role and fed the ball forward on many occasions. Hary Foster and Troy Metzner took advantage of their height and speed to also help send the ball regularly forward to Smith at full forward. Max Askionov and Lachlan Wright were also prominent for the young Hawks.
Of the seven netball games between Barooga and Tocumwal the Hawks posted five victories. Close results were the order of the day in three games with the under 13s winning by five goals, B grade winning by six goals and the under 11s squeaking home by two in the tightest contest of the day. C grade won convincingly in a very one-sided game whilst the under 15 result was never in doubt after half time. A grade lost a very tight tussle by three goals whilst the under 17s went down by a margin of 10. Awards went to Bridget Rootsey (A grade), Teresa Rootsey (B grade), Breanna Nye (under 15s), Jess Brooks and Maddi Dunn (under 13s) and Jordyn Lowe (under 11s).
