Round 7 Weekender Notes vs Tocumwal
Welcome to all our club sponsors and supporters to today’s encounter against the Bloods. We also unroll the welcome mat to the Tocumwal officials, players and supporters.
Last week saw the Hawks venture over to the Lions’ Den and we came away fairly well scarred! Let’s make sure we secure some good wins, in both the footy and netball today........please!!!!!!
The Senior game was an absolute belter and went right down to the wire. Congratulations to Tom Currie on getting his first Senior guernsey and welcome to Ben O’Donnell, who played his first game for the club. After a fairly even first quarter, where our defence were sensational, the Hawks took the ascendency in the second. Some clean ball movement through hard running and good disposal saw them skip away to a hand 16 point lead. Pinny had a shot right on the half time buzzer, which registered a minor score and this would have finished off a brilliant quarter nicely for the Hawks. After the long break, another goal saw Barooga dominating proceedings but, once again, through a lack of concentration and discipline, the boys allowed Mulwala to get back into the game. Their 4 goal lead quickly dissipated and they were left holding onto a 1 point advantage at the final breather. The last quarter was one for the ages, with both sides relentless in attempting to secure the win. It went tit for tat, goal for goal, until a couple of crucial lapses in accountability saw the ball end up in the arms of Tim Doyle. With scores tied, which would have been a fitting end, he calmly went back and banged it from 50m to break the hearts of the Hawks and give the Lions a 6 point win. Pricey, Clarkey and Micky Connors could not be faulted for their efforts, each of them having magnificent games in defence. Magic Mick Sumner played a lone hand up forward, clearly being the most effective on the ground with 7 majors. Josh McGaw gave the side plenty of drive with his run off a wing and Hydey was his ever-reliable self, knocking up getting possession and tackling himself to exhaustion. So close yet so far and the boys face a must win today or could virtually be kissing their season good-bye!
In the Reserves game, it was good to see Leigh Adkins back in the Hawks’ jumper. The boys were competitive for the first half, with the highlight being an 8 minute spurt in the second where they kicked a couple of quick goals to have the Lions on the back foot. From then on in, it was one way traffic as the improved Mulwala took control of the game and handed the boys an 85 point walloping. Nicko was terrific all day long, Trav Nye gets better with each passing week, Knuckles and Moose tried in vain to quell the tide, Joffa Elleray was a constant link through the midfield and Xav Hunt had his best game since coming up from the U17s. A win is a must today and then, with a couple of weeks off, some players will be back from injury and unavailability and should see the side strengthen.
A first period of no score for the Hawks ended up being the difference in the U17 game. The Lions had 5 on the board before the Hawks registered but then were able to match Mulwala goal for goal. The end result of 39 points should be seen as a good indicator to the boys that they’re not far off the mark. Artie Rootsey, Mitch Sim, Tom Butler, Will Robinson, Jake Russell and Sam Gough all had super games for the Maroon and Gold. Let’s put it together today!
Like the U17s, the U14s only have themselves to blame for their result as a poor third quarter saw them chasing a 7 goal deficit at 3 / 4 time. Although this was the case, the boys showed a lot of tenacity and got within a couple of kicks, going down by 12 points in the end. Well done to Josh Sim, who came into the side for his first game with the club. Lachie Wright, Cal Leighton-Daly, Jake Jenkins, Hary Foster, Harrison Evans and Declan Brooks were terrific contributors for the Hawks.
12 & Under: Barooga 19 to Mulwala 17. Another consistent performance by our young girls. The team gained momentum in the second quarter and even though Mulwala fought back in the third, they showed determination and lots of character to hold on for a two goal win. Well done. CRC Fertilisers Award: Nicola Brooke
13 & Under: Barooga 3 to Mulwala 28. Our girls tried hard against a very consistent Mulwala team. McDonalds Encourgement Award: Georgia Papalia
15 & Under: Barooga 15 to Mulwala 39. The answer is in the basics. Take some encouragement from the last quarter where you all played so much better and won the quarter. Confidence is a wonderful thing. Keep listening at training and try to implement what Caitlin and Jess are teaching you. The Beach Award: Bridget O’Dwyer.
17 & Under: Barooga 10 to Mulwala 56. Another tough day but keep going girls. You are all so keen to learn and improve so listen to Steph and the rewards will come. McDonald’s Encouragment Award: Siobhan Jackson
C Reserve: Barooga 34 to Mulwala 38. Well played girls. Mulwala jumped us at the start but, to your credit, you all settled and played yourselves back into the game to come within 2 goals late in the last quarter. Excellent defensive pressure was rewarded with good shooting. D’Vine Award went to Sharon Nye. Apologies to Emily Fisher who won the Award against Finley – a case of mistaken identity – sorry.
C Grade: Barooga 45 to Mulwala 49. The scoreline indicated that this was a very close and tough game. Good defensive pressure didn’t allow either team to gain momentum but accurate shooting kept the scoreboard ticking over. Barooga Hotel Award: Kelly Wright.
B Grade: Barooga 49 to Mulwala 38. Kim was relieved to have two full time shooters in the team this week and the result speaks for itself. Everyone was more confident playing in their usual positions. When Mulwala applied pressure in the last quarter, you all steadied, regained control and came away with a very pleasing result. Well done. Wingate Sportz Award went to Natasha Howard.
A Grade: Barooga 32 to Mulwala 58. The game was played at a fast pace and at times was very physical. There were some wonderful passages of play that we just need to apply consistently for four solid quarters. Let’s regroup, remain focused and make this week ours. Fosters’Seppelts Award: Bridget and Sarah.
