Weekender notes R18 vs Finley
Today we head north to take on the rejuvenated Cats at Finley. Should be enthralling contests all round as it is always difficult to earn the 4 points easily at the Cattery. Congratulations to Wrenny and Robbo on their reappointments for 2011. It’s always nice to have things organised so early and know that the process is being put in place for another exciting year in ’11. With that said, there is still a bit to be done in 2010 with 3 rounds remaining before the business end of the season.
Seniors
The Seniors came up against their bogey side in the form of the Deniliquin Rams. The last couple of outings haven’t been pleasant but, with good form on the board, the Hawks were looking to make amends. They didn’t disappoint! Kicking with a 3 goal wind, the Hawks got out to a great start, kicking 7 to the Rams’ 3. The second was a good old-fashioned goal fest, where both sides blazed away at the goal front. The Rams banged home 7 of their own. Not to be outdone, the Hawks squeezed through another 5 to have the game evenly poised at the long orange break. The third quarter was almost the boys’ undoing. They had the majority of the play early in the stanza but couldn’t convert to exert the necessary scoreboard pressure that would have put the game to rest. Finally the scope straightened and a couple of late goals saw the Hawks extend their lead to a handy 38 points. The last saw an even quarter played out, which could have been far greater if the kicking yips weren’t present. Although kicking into the wind, the Hawks had 9 scoring shots to 5 (3.6 to 4.1), with the match statistics indicating a dominant display by Barooga, accumulating 17 more scoring shots than the opposition. It was a solid performance by the boys, netting them a 37 point victory and a game’s breathing space in 5th position. Crappy returned to his brilliant best, dominating proceedings with his sublime skills coming under notice. Magic Sumner continued his wonderful season with another BOG performance, as did Harvs, who slotted through a cool 7 and providing plenty of headaches for the Deni defence. Clarkey, after a spray from the coach at half time, went on to play a valuable shut down role and demonstrate his importance to the team’s success, Pinny was sensational in a key forward position and Rock Forsyth put together another solid four quarter effort, continuing on his purple patch of form. Overall, a great team effort, which holds the Hawks in good stead for the remaining games of the season. Big one today against the Cats. Good luck boys!
Reserves
The Reserves got back on the right side of the ledger after a couple of close losses. The contest was very even up to half time, with the Rams holding the ascendency. To the boys’ credit, they lifted and dominated the 3rd, kicking 4.2 and kept Deni scoreless. With the game up for grabs, it was the Hawks that dug deep to eventually run out 19 point winners. Those selected amongst the best can consider themselves lucky as it was a terrific team performance, where all contributed. Azza was nominated for BOG honours, being well supported by Joffa, Dylan (made a welcomed return and got through the game unscathed!), Knuckles, Randy and Timmy O’D, who has returned home from his overseas venture. Huge game today as the finals’ embers are still aglow, however so slightly they might be. Where there’s light, there’s hope!!!!
U17
The U17 came up against their respective league leaders and, after an even first term, found out why the Rams are in the position they are. Try as they might, the Hawks battled to contain the free flowing style of Deni and when the final siren sounded, the boys found themselves in arrears to the tune of 106 points. Today they come up against another of the heavyweights in the competition. Nothing to lose so go out there and give it your best boys!!!! Mitch Sim is firming as one of the favourites to take out the B and F, with another stellar display. Riley Brooks, Bryce Stephens, Shaun Barnett, Angus Currie and Ryan Welch were also deemed worthy recipients of being mentioned for their efforts during the game.
U14
In the U14 match, the little Hawks gave it their all and had a red hot go. They were right in the contest up to half time but slowly fell away and couldn’t keep up the intensity. The final difference of 31 points is a vast improvement on the 142 point shellacking they got in Rd. 3. Shows you the great improvement these young fellas have made over the course of the year. It was once again the older brigade that led from the front, with Lachie W, Hary and Cal L-D being great role models. They were joined in their endeavours by Declan Brooks, Jye Noonan and Jake Jenkins. Let’s try and finish off the year with a couple of wins!

We suffered a major blow in the first quarter with Lauren dislocating her ankle. We were all in shock and never recovered on the court. A huge thank you to the Deni girls and all the supporters, especially the Senior footballers (Magic, Hilly and Clarkey), who helped out. We would like to wish her a speedy recovery and to get back out on the court next year. We would also like to wish Abbey all the best in her new adventures in Ararat.
