Weekender notes Round 9
After what seems an eternity since our last game, the Hawks are back in action today against the Echuca Utd. Eagles over at their aviary.
Before we get on to our last game against the Bloods, congratulations need to be extended to Hydey, Pricey, Crappy and ex-coach, Trants, and the rest of the MFL Senior side on winning the interleague game against Bellarine. Great effort!!!
Well, the last time we donned the maroon and gold was a very successful outing against the Bloods. Of the 9 games contested, the Hawks prevailed in 7 of these!!! Nice to be back on that winning feeling!!! With a number of players returning from injury and the recruitment of Rory Hilton (welcome!) to the club, the second half of the season couldn’t have started more promisingly (no good over this side of the fence though!)!!!
The Seniors battled to break the shackles of a determined Tocumwal outfit. For three quarters, it was tit for tat and a battle of attritions. Inaccurate kicking by the Bloods was the Hawks’ only saving grace and, even though having one less scoring shot, took a handy lead into the last break. It was all one way traffic in the last as the Hawks got into top gear and left a gallant Bloods’ team in their wake. The final margin saw Barooga blow-out the score-line and came away with a handy 51 point win. Hydey, as per usual, was an incredible source of inspiration and, like a good bottle of Grange, just gets better and better with each passing game. His partner in crime, Crappy, was as good, producing the form which has him pencilled in Balwyn’s team of the first decade of the 2000’s. Harvs produced a game to many of the contingent’s delight, booting 5 and play a pivotal on-ball role. Shaun Connor revelled in the conditions, as did Glen Elleray, who impressed on a wing, and Trav Hayes, whose skills by foot continue to impress. Big match today as they tackle the Eagles, who are sitting there-abouts with our boys and both sides looking to break into the top six. Good luck!!!
The Reserves got back on track with a scrappy but effective win against Tocumwal. By half time, the boys had opened up a handy lead, holding Toc scoreless and continued on in much the same vein for the second, never allowing the Bloods to get back into the game. In the end, it was a satisfying 91 point win for the lads. Much tougher test today but should go into it with possibly their strongest line-up to date. Jamo, who has been working extremely hard off the field, received BOG honours and is starting to reap the benefits of his hard work. Flanno and Nicko continued their strong start to the season, being well supported by Randy Connors, Jay Nye and Azza Elzinga.
Up to the Bloods game, the U17s and U14s had not tasted victory but how sweet it was in opening their accounts. The U17s played their most effective four quarter game for the year and, as a result, ended up with a thumping 139 point thrashing of the undermanned Bloods. They now have to start producing this form against the better sides. Better players in an even team performance were Sam Gough, Tom Butler, Logan Morey, Declan Ryan, Artie Rootsey and Jay Dunn.
Like the U17s, the U14s opened their 2010 account with an emphatic 209 point win. Great effort for all their hard work and effort! The side was best served on the day by Hary Foster, Cal Leighton-Daly, Tom Creenaune, Ethan Leighton-Daly, Lachie Wright and Jai Noonan.
The netballers also fared well, making it a good day for the Hawks!
12 & Under: Barooga 36 to Tocumwal 12. A dominate performance by our young girls. Good defensive pressure created lots of turnovers which the goalers rewarded with accurate shooting. Well done girls – keep up the good work. Award: CRC Fertilisers – Emma Buchanan.
15 & Under: Barooga 31 to Tocumwal 11. The girls started nervously in hope of recording their first win for the season. As the game progressed every player’s confidence grew and so did the teams enthusiasm. The timing of leads, defensive pressure and general court play by all the girls was very pleasing to watch. Let’s keep the momentum going. The Beach Award: Kayla Eddy.
17 & Under: Barooga 17 to Tocumwal 24. All we needed was one more quarter. In the first half we were tentative but after half time things started to go our way. Our defensive pressure increased and our attack end became more positive. Congratulations girls, you all fought the game out to the end. Take this attitude into your next game and you never know. Barooga Café and Take Away Award – Deana Luff.
B Grade: Barooga 50 to Tocumwal 25. A slow start to the game but after half time you all lifted a gear and played positive, direct netball. Encouragement and support for each other was obvious as the team gained momentum. Fosters & Seppelts Award: Lauren Nye.
A Grade: Barooga 33 to Tocumwal 45. The score line didn’t quite do justice to how close the game really was. The girls fought hard for the whole game and came to within two goals during the third quarter. Once again there were periods of very positive and confident netball which we just have to apply for the whole game. Our turn is very soon. Wingate’s Sportz Award - Bridget Rootsey.
Thanks to all those who turned out for the Wild West night. Pity there wasn’t more to see Kelly Wright and Col Ross tame the “Beast” (and that wasn’t Ben Ryan!!!)!Many thanks also to all the Fathers and Sons, and Mothers and Daughters, who participated in their respective games on Sunday morning. It was a lot of fun, created heaps of laughs and in some cases gave the younger generation the opportunity to see that ‘the oldies can play’. The response was very pleasing and hopefully we can encourage more of the senior players and their families to come next time.
Good luck to everyone today!!! Let’s continue our climb to September action!!!!
