Weekender notes for Round 11
Today we set off to Mercury Drive to take on Chissy and the Rumba crew. Look forward to catching up with one of our past champions and all-round good guys, who was a member of all four Barooga MFL Premierships!
Last week saw the Hawks take on the Purples at home and come away with a 65% win strike rate, which proved a good day at the office.
Seniors
The Seniors took on their nemesis of 2007/08 in the shape of Nathalia. In front of a healthy crowd, which had in attendance Brent Harvey, Shane’s brother and Kangaroos’ captain, the Hawks set about skipping out of the blocks early. A couple of late goals by the Purps were the only thing that saved them from a greater deficit being posted, with the Hawks holding sway by 23 points. The next two quarters turned into a dour affair, with neither side being able to assert any authority. Basic skill errors plagued any free-flowing footy. The exception was Magic Sumner, whose foot skills were hit with pin-point perfection and a joy to watch. The Hawks took a 32 point advantage into the long break while Nathalia won the 3rd by a point to reduce this to 31 points at ¾ time. Wrenny posed a challenge to the boys that percentage could be vital in the wash-up and they needed to lift their work rate. They responded in the last to run over the Purples and register a comfortable 57 point victory. This win saw them elevate themselves into the top six for the first time this year. Now they have to keep winning to consolidate this. A tough task poses itself today in the form of the Rumba boys on their home deck but the Hawks are playing some good footy. The Beast (Ben Ryan) had a great game off half-forward/onball, finishing with 4 majors and BOG honours. Harvs produced his second bag of 9 big ones and would’ve had his supporter group in raptures. Rowdy controlled the game off half-back, giving the Hawks plenty of drive, Magic played a pivotal role in the result, with his skills standing out, Hydey continued his consistency with yet another stellar performance (for as many games as we’ve played) and new recruit, Rory Hilton, showed glimpses of what he has in store and, with a few more games under his belt, will only get better and better!
Reserves
After a close loss the previous week, the Hawks were hell-bent on turning around their fortunes and they did just that. An improved attitude and more players willing to stand-up and share the workload, lead to the boys leading from go to whoa. The pleasing factor was restricting the opposition to the score they did, especially when they were kicking with the wind. In the end, it was the Hawks who prevailed by 87 points and still stay in contact with the top six. Better players, in an even team performance, were Nicko (be careful when you touch him!!!), Knuckles (again!!!), Bomber, Jammo, Azza and Dale Stanyer. Huge game today against Rumbalara, who are sitting around the same area of the ladder. Should be a ripper!
U17
Three from three!!!! The boys are on a bit of a roll at the moment and playing the type of footy we were all expecting them to be playing from the onset. As the old adage says “Better late than never”. With this new found confidence, the boys will give a good account of themselves today and still be playing for a chance of September action. Buff Smith had his best game since coming up from the U14s. He was well supported by Sammy Jenkins, Matt “Rhino” Foster, Tom Currie, Ryan Welch and Mitch Sim
U14
The U14 game was a ripper and went right down to the wire. Unfortunately, the young Hawks couldn’t get up, going down by a solitary goal. Blowing the cobwebs off took a little longer than expected, with a scoreless first quarter hurting the boys. Better luck this week now that you’re back into the thick of things. Couldn’t fault the efforts of Jake Jenkins, Jye Noonan, Lachie Coburn, Declan Brooks or Lewis Currie, who battled their little hearts out!!!! A great chance presents itself today!!! Make sure you grasp it!!!
In the netball, the girls had a pretty good day, coming away with 5 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses.
