The Hawks had a big day out against Finley with the seniors and reserves kicking a combined total of 58-37 while the struggling Cats managed a meagre 0-2. Country Footy is tough at the best of times but the continuing drought is taking its toll on many clubs financially and causing playing numbers to dwindle. Finley is a proud club though and theyll ride out the tough times and bounce back. They have a number of exciting kids and their junior sides won convincingly.
Mick Dunns Under 14s knew they were in for a hard day at the office coming up against the ladder leaders. The young Hawks battled strongly all day and scored their only goal in the final term, showing that they refused to throw the towel in at any stage. The Cats won 11-13 to 1-0 with the scoreline not doing justice to the effort the boys put in. Awards went to Sam Gough (Barooga Bakery), Arty Rootsey (Barooga General Store), Harry Foster (Outdoor Indulgence) and Logan Morey (Healthy Foods) while Hayden Mustica led from the front and received the encouragement award.
What would have pleased the coach most was the fact that his senior players stood up to lead by example. If they can maintain their intensity week in, week out, the wins will come.
The Under 17s also played very well against a talented outfit. At half time, the Hawks were down by 46 points. They came out in the second half and lifted their work rate, tackling and chasing hard. The Cats struggled to deal with the pressure they were put under and booted just the one goal in the third term. The final term saw the Hawks continually attack, booting three goals to show what they are capable of when they support each other. The final margin was 61 points in favour of the Cats but the Hawks can take plenty out of this game and should return to the winners list soon.
Better players were Sam Jenkins (Menthas), Hayden Atkinson-Thring (Andrew Jenkins Real Estate), Matty Connors (Babcon Hire), James Leech (Barooga Bakery) and Tom Currie (Barooga General Store).
It was all one way traffic in the reserves although Finley should be commended for putting eighteen players on the park. A ten goal first term had spectators wondering how many the Magoos could boot. Finley competed strongly over the next three terms restricting the Hawks to six in the second and four in the third before a seven goal last quarter saw the Hawks finish on 27-19 to no score.
Glen Horse Nye ran himself into form racking up countless possessions to win the Barooga Hotel Award. Simon Douglas (Babcon Hire) had a field day slotting through 10 goals and Scotty Nye (Bottom Pub) and Hayden Woodward (Barooga Sporties) reminded the selectors they are quality players and will push for the Seniors side this week.
The ones recorded their biggest win in recent years with a 202 point win over the hapless Cats. At times, it resembled a training drill with 11 players booting 31 goals between them. Sean Harrap, 6, Brent Chapman, 5, Tyron Hill and Ashley Round with 4 apiece led the onslaught.
All players contributed with Roundy and Chappy taking out major incentive awards and Seany Harrap and Zac Gallagher the minor incentive recipients. Sean Robbo, Hilly and Chris Gallagher rated highly.
Player auction winners were Ashley Round (Spanner) in the seniors and Dougie (Dozer) in the reserves. Mulwala winners were Chris Gallagher in the ones and Hayden Woodward in the twos.
Congratulations to our Pool C winning interleague representatives Marty Brooks, Tyron Hill, Sean Robbins, Sean Harrap and Zane Goodwin. The boys did the club proud last weekend all figuring prominently in wins over the Wimmera League on Saturday and then the massive win against the Western Border League in the final on Sunday.
Well done too to Micky Connors who played in the Murray League Under 18s matches over the weekend. Despite losing both games, Micky acquitted himself well.
Our netballers were well represented in Rep sides last weekend at Albury. Sharni Hazelman and Bridget Rootsey were part of the successful Under 15 side, Bonnie Coburn and Taylah Hazelman played in the Under 13s and they were defeated in the first final while Mackella Armfield played in the Under 17 team. Congratulations to all girls the club is very proud of you.
This week we travel to Deniliquin to take on the Rams. Lets make sure the trip home is an enjoyable one!!!

Netball
U/10: Enthusiasm plus!! Im still not sure if the girls were excited about playing a game as much as the possibility of playing in the rain. Each of you continue to try hard and are beginning to make more space to make passing to each other a lot easier. Keep up the great work. Encouragement Awards: Jessie Quirk and Chloe Anthony.
U&11: Barooga 1 to Finley 21 It was our first time to play in the wet, it required us to be more careful with our passes and to slow down. Barooga Bakery award went to Jordyn Morey and Brays canteen award went to Hannah Bray.
U&13: Barooga 8 to Finley 12 The girls played one of their best games. We matched Finley all game except the first quarter, which aided Finley in taking the win. Considering the conditions our girls played in, they proved that they are definitely serious about netball. Great game girls!!! Awards this week went to Bonnie Barooga General Store and Cody Melba Theatre.
U&15: Barooga 15 to Finley 15 The girls started the game with some great passages of play and saw themselves leading for most of the game, however a lot of basic errors allowed Finley back in the game and resulted in a draw. Award: Karlee
U&17: Barooga 14 to Finley 28
C Reserve: Barooga 34 to Finley 26 With the wet conditions a strong start and having the lead at the end of the first quarter was exactly what we needed and the girls did, our passing was more direct and it was good to see the ring working well! Everyone worked hard for their win and put in 100%. The last quarter saw things slide but we managed to regroup in the final minutes and come away with the points. Divine/Bakery Award: Cassie, Velvet Monkey Award: Liz
C Grade: Barooga 39 to Finley 25
B Grade: Barooga 63 to Finley 25 Winter is upon us - that is my excuse anyway. Great defensive pressure enabled the goalers many opportunities. Theresa rewarded the girls with some confident goals and strong rebounding. Lauren Nye thoroughly deserved the Wingate Sportz award with her hard running and brilliant passing. Well done girls.
A Grade: Barooga 28 to Finley 28 A slow start saw us 7 goals down at half time. Well done to everyone for fighting back, its a real shame we couldnt keep a couple in front in the end. Once the whole team can play well at the same time, we should have more success. Fosters Wine Award to Sarah and Bottom Pub Award to Jodie, our two saviours in defence.
GO HAWKS!!!
