Round 18

Seniors

The game definitely lived up to the expectations of two teams with even points on the league ladder. Rumbalara goaled first and after Nathalia scored their first major, Rumba kicked two more quick goals. The home side were leading us to the ball and it looked as though the game may start to blow out somewhat. The purples through the likes of Adam Quarrell, Anthony Hill and Rick Barnes had to work harder than they would have liked to rescue the ball from a quick footed opposition. The second quarter was pretty much a mirror of the first in the fact that both sides kicked four more goals each. Rumba kicked the first two goals after the main break, then the purples banged on six unanswered goals. Lifted by the strong work ethics of Jared Maskell, Al Corry and Mitch Curtis, the entire team worked as one. First year player Sean Mortimer showed clean skills and a cool head up back as did another relative newcomer to purple land Chris Seamen who kicked six goals of his own and assisted at least three more through for the team. The purples kicked six more goals in the last to run out comfortable winners. Final score: Nathalia 20.12 132 d Rumbalara 13.15 93. Goals: C. Seaman 6; B. Ross 3; A. Quinn 3; N. Gemmill 3; T. Hicks 2; M. Curtis 1; R. Barnes 1; S. German 1. Awards: Mug: A. Corry; Past Players: A. Hill; Mick Hogan Excavations: A. Quarrell; Middle Hotel: M. Curtis; Brereton’s Bakery: R. Barnes; Club Award: S. Mortimer.

Reserves

We were just not up to the challenge, the difference between last week’s effort against Mulwala and this week’s was too great, it was very hard to pick good players but some do deserve a mention. Thanks to the 3 thirds players that had to fill in due to 3 late withdrawals. Stuart Bell gave his all and gave plenty of drive through the centre. Andrew Liddell kept presenting at full forward and kicked 3 goals. Ash Dohnt again was in everything. Wade Hicks found the footy and some form. Dwayne Pomfret did some good spoiling and mopping up work under extreme pressure on the back line. Final score: Rumbalara 8.12 d. Nathalia 6.5. Goals: A. Liddell 3; J. Ryan 1; D. Quinn 1; A. Dohnt 1. Awards: Past Players’ Mug, Stuart Bell; Blake St Butchery, Andrew Liddell; Middle Hotel, Ash Dohnt; Club awards; Wade Hicks & Dwayne Pomfret.

Under 17’s

Although we didn’t come away with the points our boys should hold their heads up because they played a great brand of football. We still need to concentrate on our ball disposal which in the end cost us the game. Angus Armstrong had an outstanding game along with Joel Cahir, Corey Hicks, Aaron Thompson, Bobby Nichols and Malcolm Barnes. Also like to thank the three 4ths players that stepped up this week in Kodi Hicks, Rhys Shannon & Dylan Bell, all three showed a lot and will be good contributors next year. Awards: Lowy’s Farm Fencing, Angus Armstrong; TJ’s Supermarket, Joel Cahir; Salon 12, Aaron Thompson; Al’s Cafe, Bobby Nichols; Rex James Stockfeed, Corey Hicks; Tony Ryan Best 1st Year, Malcolm Barnes.

Under 14’s

In a very entertaining match at Rumbalara the 4ths boys played a terrific game, but just couldn’t withstand the Rumbalara run and went down in a close game. Brenton Boxall continued his terrific recent form. Kodi Hicks and Rhys Shannon led from the front as captains and Dermot Nichols presented strongly as full forward. We looked dangerous moving the ball forward and shared the ball well. Jared Laffy and Bowen Smith combined well and Kodi Hicks, Rhys Shannon and Dylan Bell brought other into the game. Nathalia backline rebounded with great run with Todd Stringer spoiling, Tom Nihill mopping up and Harrison Hawks defending stoutly. Awards: Al’s Cafe, Todd Stringer; Salon 12 Hairdressing, Alex Hicks; TJ’s Supermarket, Tom Nihill; Rex James Stockfeed, Brenton Boxall; Lowy’s Farm Fencing, Jared Laffy; Al’s Cafe medal, Dermot Nichols; Past Players Footy, Nathan Cahir; Nathalia Printers, Harrison Hawks; Tony Ryan Best 1st year, Thomas Brooks; Drink bottle, Rhys Shannon, Rumbalara voted best player; Kodi Hicks.

17/U: Gemma Cusack playing in GD got the first intercept from the first centre pass and this seemed to set up our dominance of the game. Gemma and Blaise did not let anything into Rumba’s goal ring.
