Round 3
Reni Hicks in U/11 action against Mulwala

Seniors

In conditions similar to that of summer we travelled to Mulwala keen to make amends of the previous week's loss. After several forward thrusts and unable to score we then become the first team, to place a major on the score board. However the celebrations were short lived as Mulwala quickly answered our efforts. It then became the Dave Liddell show for the rest of the quarter. Front of the man presenting, strong hands and accuracy off the left boot, the man of old had returned. Three parts through the quarter, after both Mulwala and Liddell had kicked their second goal each, he then went into the ruck to give hard working Jarrod Maskell a rest. This move also saw Brodie Ross moved to full forward and kicking his first goal, justifying the matchday panel's decisions.

The second quarter started off in similar vein as to the first, with both teams swapping the lead as each goal was kicked. A fine combination of left foot kicking from Al Corry to Ash Quinn to Liddell then onto Jake Butler in the square resulted in our fourth goal. Goals also to Quinn brothers, Ash and Luke, and two more to Liddell resulted in a total of ten kicked by both sides for the quarter. More would have been added by Mulwala but for the terrific efforts of our up back players, Danny Bourke, Rick Barnes, Paul McCallum and Anthony Hill continually gave effort after effort to repeatedly turn the ball back from where it came. What work Bourke could not personally do he remained within earshot of his understudies, guiding them in their decision making.

The third quarter seemed to be but a mirror of the previous two, with that one for you one for me pattern continuing. Ash Quinn kicked two and Dylan Butler was on the end of a Liddell handball kicking truly. Then with a few minutes remaining and light drizzling rain falling Mulwala kicked two quick goals and perhaps their most important scoring as this was to be the winning margin.

With rain continuing to drizzle the entire of the last quarter, the purples skill level faded a little further than that of their opposition, thus rendering them unable to bridge that two goal gap. It would definitely be a sad day if you could not retain enjoyable memories from a loss. The centre square around ground rucking of Maskell, work rate of the little master Nathan Gemmill, Dave Liddell's five goals and Adam Quarrell's mark of the day (year) all are worthy of a spot in your take home doggy bag.

Final Score: Mulwala 16.8 d. Nathalia 14.10.

Goals: D. Liddell 5, A. Quinn 4, B. Ross 2, D. Butler 1, J. Butler 1, L. Quinn 1.

 Reserves

With two players pulling out before the game and already four thirds playing in the team it was always going to be a tough game. But to the boys credit they threw themselves into the game. With nine players 18 or under it was great to see the effort that was put in. We tried players all over the park to try and find the right mix. Matthew Elborough was inspirational all day; Darren and Chris Hindle probably played their best games for the club. Daniel Robinson was at his creative best once moved back to defence and Jono Tamburro showed flashes of brilliance. Overall Mulwala were too good and deserved the win. Awards: Blake Street Butchery, M Elborough, Club Award, D Hindle, C Hindle, Middle Hotel, D Robinson, J Tamburro

Under 17's

Our 2nd game of the year was a trip to Mulwala. Kicking with the wind in the 1st quarter we kicked 2 goals to their 4. There were lots of positives in the game, but in the end it was our endeavor to win the ball which let us down. With good work for the whole game from Bobby, Corey, Marcus, Jack, Clinton and Stuart saw these boys getting the awards. Special mention should also be given to Jordan and Joel for their efforts all day and for Clinton Barnes for giving us a hand. Remember fellas, believe in one another and don't drop your heads. Keep pushing forward, we will get there. Awards: Lowy's farm fencing, Bobby Nichols, Tj's Supermarket, Corey Hicks, Al's Cafe, Marcus Walsh, Rex James Stockfeed, Jack Ryan, Salon 12, Clinton Barnes, Best First Year, Stuart Sutton.

Under 14's

The fourths boys played a terrific brand of football to score six goals and move the ball methodically around the ground. Rhys Shannon & Kodi Hicks played great captains games, kicking four goals between them. Bowen Smith displayed silky skills and destines to be a great player for the Purples. Harrison Hawks, another first year player also showed potential reading the play and running off half back. Dermot Nichols played a very disciplined game in the back line and will be an asset to the team. Other notable mentions include Alex Hicks & Tom Nihill in the middle, Heath Wharton up forward and Jared Laffey who played a great game at centre half back. Jackson Walpole racked up his first possessions for the purples and set up a goal.
