Seniors
After raising our 4th flag in as many years and watching Ash Quinn crash through his 100 game banner it was game on. Tongala signalled the intentions of their visit to purple land with hard attacking at the ball from the onset, thus having our back line under the pump from the word go. Although Jarrod Maskell was winning the ruck duels and best player Dylan Butler roving these opportunities some costly turnovers in our forward half resulted in us paying full price for our mistakes. After Tongala had put the first three goals and as many points on the board we were able to put our first goal on the board through a downfield free kick to Scotty Miles after a high tackle to Maskell. Then late in the quarter a succession of passes from Liddell to Miles to Jono Tamburro resulted in our second major and a slight evening up of the scores. Tonny was to goal no more for the quarter largely due to the mighty efforts of Paul McCallum and Billy Hutchinson both keen to consolidate their years future having first tasting senior football last year. Chris Hindle too settled in quickly in this his first senior game. After the first break Tonny again attacked early with two goals. Brodie Ross being moved into defence was able to slow things enough for the purples to go forward allowing Luke Quinn at the end of a Nathan Gemmill hand pass to score the first of his two goals. Tonny replied then Stuie Bell scored our fourth goal. Not sure what was said or done but Tonny then went on a rampage kicking six unanswered goals. The half time break had no effect on them as they came out and kicked another six before the Butler cousins combined with first gamer Paul Connell to give Luke Quinn the opportunity to kick his second and Nathalia's fifth for the match. The last quarter and definitely our best for the match saw us match opposition in play making with both teams kicking five goals each for the term. Brodie Ross after taking a big pack mark kicked truly. Then the young combined with the old, a Wade Hicks kick, Nathan Gemmill handpass saw the old legend Adam Quarrell kick straight and true. With only minutes remaining Ross kicked his third and the teams tenth. Although well beaten there were many obvious positives to come out of the match, experience with time will mould this side to be highly competitive. Awards: Club Mug: Dylan Butler, $50.00 Hogan Excavations: Brodie Ross, $30.00 Nathalia Hotel: Paul McCallum, $20.00 Brereton's Bakery: Billy Hutchinson, other best players J. Maskell, A. Quarrell
Reserves
With 18 players leaving the club it was always going to be a tough task of even getting a seconds side, but to the boys credit the effort they put in was sensational, with 14 players that never played together the endeavour and commitment was admirable. James Smith was super in ruck all day and will be better for the run. The entire back line was terrific and battled hard against all the odds. Daniel Nave, Jason Bell and Alby were great. Hayden Power and Simon Quarrell (Reserves Captain) were good. Overall it was great to see such determination and commitment, but full credit to Tongala who were further advanced than the Purps. Awards: Blake Street Butchery/Mug: J. Smith; $20 Club: H. Power; $20 Middle Hotel: D. Nave; Other award winners: S. Quarrell; M. Elborough; J. Bell.
Under 17's
Our first game of the season was at home against Tongala, who played off in the finals last year. Our boys went out and matched their opponents in all areas of their game play. In the end it was our turnovers that cost us the game. Well done boys, you were hard at it all day and never stopped giving 100% and that's all I can ask for.
