vs Southern Suns @ Home

The Thirds played their first game of the year at home, hosting the newly formed Southern Suns. MP Bill Sykes attended the morning to present the club with the 2011 Premiership Cup & Flag. He commended the attitude, behavior & commitment shown by the Benalla All Blacks, and wished the club the best for season 2012.

Once the formalities were completed both sides engaged in a quality game of football. Given it was the Under 18s’ first game of the year, it was evident that both sides had plenty of nervous energy for the first 10-15 minutes. The Panthers were able to take a small lead into quarter time, and by half time the boys extended it to 37 points. The margin didn’t reflex the contest as the Suns controlled a larger portion of the play.

Tate Duscher started where he left off from last year’s grand final, playing on the wing gathering a large number of disposals, receiving the ball from defence and provided the forwards with excellent forward entries by foot. Sam Schnider was fantastic at the stoppages, while new players Cody Crawford, Jordan Smith, Tate Jones and Jack Curphy were able to hurt the opposition with strong marks that resulted in multiple goals for each. The Suns were able to bounce back in the third, kicking 3 goals to 4 behinds to reduce the margin to 23 points. In the last quarter, the game was an arm wrestle, the Panthers kicked the first 3 goals of the quarter to push the margin back out to 6-7 goals before the Suns scored the final three goals of the game resulting in the Panthers running out winners by 24 points. Well Done boys!!
