Past Players Officials & Supporters

Past Players, Officials and Supporters Association (PPOSA) Annual Report for 2008

It is with great pleasure that I once again present the annual report on behalf of the Wangaratta Rovers Football Netball Club, PPOSA for 2008.

The PPOSA continued to carry out their Objectives in taking an active role in promoting the club, fostering fellowship amongst supporters, past players and officials as well as assisting the main committee in the day to day operation of the club.

And what a year it was in reflection.  Office bearers for 2008 were elected at the AGM in February 2008. They were President- Andrew Scott, Vice President- Mathew Dillon, Secretary- Mark Booth and Treasurer -Graeme Bell.

Once again the PPOSA took the responsibility for manning the home game gates with the lion share of this task undertaken again by “Bully” Wise, Harold Burns and Don Richards; however it was great to see other PPOSA members helping out with the roster system.

The annual golf day was once again a huge success with a near capacity number of players (over 100) hitting off on a sunny July Sunday at Waldara Golf Club.  Another Golf day has been organised for November with another 100 golfers expected to hit off. Once again we acknowledge the tremendous efforts of Neville Allan, Mick Caruso, Dennis Hill, Tony Raven, The Waldara Golf Club and all sponsors for their help in this great event.

The PPOSA also assisted with the Thursday night meals as the “Scotty Burgers and Roast beef rolls of the day” providing a welcome change to the popular pasta and schnitzel meals. The PPOSA BBQ on the hill against Wangaratta and during the finals was also a great social and fund raising event. Thanks to all who helped on the day as well as the relay for life event in October.

The inaugural Melbourne Chapter of the PPOSA kicked off this year with a social evening and meal at the North Fitzroy Arms Hotel in Melbourne.  Again, without sounding over the top, it was a great evening enjoyed by all who attended with well over 40 from Melbourne and surrounds enjoying each other company. A huge thankyou to Joe Wilson whose persistence and passion for the club made this Chapter meeting, and no doubt future evenings, a great event.

The annual PPOSA social event “Celebrating the premiers of the 48, 58, 78, 88” in July was also a great day and evening highlighted by nearly 130 in attendance to hear guest speaker Mr Robbie Hickmott (past player) speaking about his experience as Stable Foreman for Lloyd Williams as well as a player for the Rovers, Melbourne, Essendon, Myrtleford and Wodonga. Thanks to the organising committee, in particular Rick Marklew who coordinated and arranged the videos and to Kay Williamson and her helpers who again presented a class meal on the evening.

Was also fantastic to see the Condon Boys back again at the PPOSA function to join us as a tribute on the passing of their father Brian.  We also regret the passing of other hawk greats in Bill Smith and Mick Nolan during the year.

We had just under 140 financial members this year which was a 40 % increase from 2007. The popular cash prize “Pick Belly’s Balls” kicked off after each home game which was a great drawcard and talking point.Working bees on the Netball Courts, Press Box and the Hogan Stand Surrounds by PPOSA members also contributed to the clubs progress toward better infrastructure and facilities. A PPOSA notice board has been purchased and placed upstairs to inform everyone on PPOSA activities and coming events.

During the year the PPOSA contributed $2000 toward gym equipment and $1078 on the purchase of an industrial vacuum cleaner for the club rooms. Cash Prizes of $500 for “Belly’s Ball bag” promotion were addition out-goings.  With these significant outgoings our liquid assets remained stable with the PPOSA bank balance at 5/10/07 at $8,475 and on 30/9/08 is $8,395. In addition, alcohol from the golf day in the order of $1000 is still to be realised into cash. Revenue streams were mainly from Memberships (Increased to $15 this year), the annual Golf day, BBQ on the hill and the PPOSA annual function.

Special Mention go to my committee, in particular to Graeme Bell, a magnificent job in managing the financial affairs of the Association, Matt Dillon for his assistance as vice president and Mark Booth for his secretarial activities.

Overall what another great year for the association and we look forward to a bigger and more successful 2009.

Andrew Scott, PPOSA President.
